Is Windows Vista faster than XP?

We did compare Windows Vista with number of other OS and tried to answer on most common question is Vista better than other Operations Systems like Linux or Mac OS X. This is similar article but now we will try to see did Microsoft once again do a great job and is Vista really better and faster than Windows XP.

We are persuaded that the user’s general public will appreciate the best ergonomics of Windows Vista and that the user lambda of applications office automation and multi-media will probably not notice the absence of the graphic bookshop OpenGL. Majority of the plays being developed for the graphic bookshop specific to the editor, namely DirectX. However, the total performances of Windows Vista required a more thorough examination. Two things in particular claimed a more in-depth analysis:

Improvements speed of Windows Vista

Microsoft Windows Vista introduces two new functions, “SuperFetch” and “ReadyBoost”, in order to improve comfort of the user. That means that one can put more data relating to the applications out of mask in all the memories available (SuperFetch), that it is the physical memory or a key USB (ReadyBoost). The goal of Microsoft is to provide a balanced speed by eliminating the latency times during daily work. This article treats execution of the basic applications Windows Vista Enterprise, which is representative of the other versions. We assembled a test system top-of-the-range and carried out a benchmarking at the same time with Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista Professional to see whether there were differences. In fact, we found some of them…

Software and Windows Vista

Even if the heart of Windows Vista underwent many modifications, the majority of the applications function under Vista, but it is however not a guarantee. It is absolutely necessary to test its essential software under Windows Vista before making the leveling. The scheduling of the processes and the pooling of the threads were improved in Vista. An absolute mechanism of protection and many additional functions were added. We tested various programs under Windows Vista Professional and drew up a list of the software which functions without problem.

A many software in connection with the video as DivX cannot be installed anymore and new versions are needed. The audio reader like Winamp 5.32 posts an error message to starting, even if it functions correctly. The applications which manage themselves their memory will not profit from the SuperFetch function of Vista. Adobe Photoshop, for example, creates a job stream file temporary to each launching; Vista does not have any access to this process and cannot accelerate it. Certain types of software will not have to be used that if they were especially conceived for Windows Vista: the firewalls, the anti-spywares and antivirus software must be Vista compatible.

Being given the SuperFetch function of Windows Vista, it is important to configure the test system so that it can reach a maximum and reproducible speed. We wants to say that it is necessary to ensure that SuperFetch functions as effectively as possible or although it does not have a variable impact on the benchmarks, this not being possible that while turning over in a state of “virgin” memory. By “virgin” memory we want to say that SuperFetch does not know anything the applications that he wants to put out of plug in the main memory. One can reach that point while reinstalling Vista or while restoring an image system previously created.

So that Vista/SuperFetch recognizes a very current application, it is completely relevant to involve the system. This drive important in the optics of a benchmarking, that about which we will at greater length speak in an article to come, but also attractive for is impassioned which wants that their systems turn with the maximum of fluidity and speed. To involve the system, it is necessary to carry out the applications and to give the responsibility them several times before starting to measure speed. That will perhaps not have a large impact on isolated applications, but with continuations of benchmarks like SYSmark, one will be able to note an important difference between the first passages and the following times where SuperFetch shows the extent of its power. Now let see the results of our tests:

Games Speed Tests:

is vista faster than xp in call of duty game

is vista faster in far cry

is xp faster in f.e.a.r.

Video & Audio Codec Speed Test:

Final Conclusions

So what are conclusions after all these tests? First we would like to hear your own opinion on our forums special section for “Is Windows Vista faster than Windows XP“. Now what are our conclusions?

The applications turned as envisaged as or slightly more slowly than under Windows XP. Synthetic benchmarks like PCMark05 show that that does not make any difference on the level of the components. We also found programs which refused to turn and others which seemed a priori to pose problem but which finally turned. In any case, we recommend seeing which software updates existing for Windows Vista in the software publishers.

The conversion of video with the codec XviD turned between 18 and 24% more slowly than on XP. As there are not new versions, we do not see any immediate solution with this problem. The with dimensions one of the good news, we do not have anything considering which indicates that the superb AeroGlass interface of Windows Vista consumes more than the office 2D of Windows XP. Even if our measurements indicate a higher consumption of 1W, it is a too weak difference to draw some the conclusions. Obviously, the resources necessary to the posting of all the elements 3D, for the rotation and the displacement of the windows are not enough to make heat the graphics processor. It perhaps also due to best is implemented of function ACPI 2.0 pennies Windows Vista which makes it possible to separately control the consumption of each component of the system.

If you want it at all costs that your PC completes enormous tasks of conversion or the work of returned in a determined time, one can say that it is the case for the moment. One should not anything change and remain with XP while waiting for optimized versions of the software.

Run an Older Program in Windows Vista

Windows Vista was designed with backward compatibility for software in mind, that is: much software was designed to run with versions of windows before Windows Vista will run just fine on Vista. However some programs my not run well or will not run at all. If you find that on old program doesn’t run correctly you can access Vista’s program compatibility wizard so you can setup windows behave like on earlier versions of windows when you run that older program. Here is how to access program compatibility wizard:

The Programs Compatibility Wizard appears, read the Caution note that you should not use this wizard for older virus detection, backup or system programs, there are programs installed with Windows Vista as well as antivirus and backup software which are build specifically for Windows Vista and you should use those programs,
  5. Click the Next button, you can choose where the older programs is located and then click Next button,
  6. Click the programs you want to run with compatibility settings and thank click Next button,
  7. Now click the Operation System that the programs uses, you can choose from any version of Windows all the way back to Windows 95, in our case we clicked “Microsoft Windows XP (Service Pack 2)” button and then click Next button,
  8. Select the display settings check box next to the display setting if the current display settings is causing the problems, if there is no display problems just click the Next button,
  9. If the program requires administrator privilege select the checkbox “Run this program as an administrator” and then click Next button,
  10. You can test your compatibilities settings by clicking the Next button,
  11. When the user account control dialog windows appears click the continue button,
  12. The program start and it works just fine (in our case, we hope it’s the same with you),
  13. Since the compatibility settings work we will live “Yes” button selected and click the Next button,
  14. Click the start application button in tool bar, if you want to send program compatibility information to Microsoft for their records click the “Yes” button, we don’t want to send our information’s so we click “No” button and then click the Next button,
  15. The Wizard is completed so close the Wizard windows by clicking Finish button. Now everything is finish. You can do this every time for any programs just repeat these steps.
