June 2007 Cumulative Update for Windows Media Center in Windows Vista

Tuesday saw the release of the June 2007 Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista on Windows Update.  Steven Bink highlights the update and Ian Dixon also talks about the update as well on his blog.

The June 2007 Cumulative Update resolves several issues in Windows Media Center including a update to the Digital Cable Card component in Media Center that improves the interaction between the CableCARD, digital cable tuner, and Media Center.

With this update programs for enabling the use of Windows Media Extenders (such as the Xbox 360) have been updated. You may need to update your third party firewall to take into account the changes to these programs and enable access through the firewall to your Windows Media Extender. For example, I use Windows Live OneCare to protect my PC I use for Media Center. In Windows Live OneCare’s Firewall Advanced Settings, you will notice it lists programs by name and version.

Other third party firewalls may do the same. With this month’s update, those version numbers for some of the programs necessary for using Windows Media Extenders may have changed so you might need to go

ICACLS.EXE : ACL command line management

Ever wanted to backup your ACLs for every file in a folder? With Windows Vista, and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2 a new tool has been released called ICACLS.

To backup the ACLs of every file in a directory type:

icacls * /save aclfile.txt

This command saves the ACLs of all the files in the directory to a file called aclfile.txt. You can add “/T” to include all the subfolders.

You can later restore that file using the /restore aclfiles.txt.

This is great when an application or administrator makes changes to the ACLs and then forgets what they changed when it causes a problem.

You can also modify the ACE of a file this is the “Access Control Entry” it controls how different processes can access files. You do this by changing the Integrity Level of a file to Low Medium or High. The Integrity Level or IL indicates if a process may access a particular file. When a process launches it is given an IL typically the same IL as its parent process.

You can see the Integrity Level of your processes using a tool like processexplorer

WINDOWS SEVEN!!!

According to Tech, the blog

We know the following about Windows 7:

1. It will be released in late 2009 - This is perhaps the only solid fact that we know about Windows 7. Other than Windows Vista, all previous Windows versions have been released within at least 3 years of each other, so with Vista’s debut in January 2007 we can safely assume Windows 7 so be in stores by late 2009 (or at the latest early 2010).

2. It will be a minor release: According to Microsoft, every other release of Windows will be a major update, therefore, since Windows Vista was a major release, Windows 7 is set to be minor update. However there is still some chance that Windows 7 will be a major release. Firstly it bears a whole new version number, secondly since Windows Vista was largely a disappointing release, Microsoft might be compelled to make the next version much more interesting.

3. There will be both 32-bit and 64-bit versions: Although the official word so far is that Windows 7 will be 64 bit, it should be noted that when Windows XP was released, Windows Longhorn was planned to be a 64-bit version only.
