10 Things - Using checkboxes on the Tablet PC & UMPC

If you’ve used Windows XP on a Tablet PC, then you’re probably aware that it wasn’t very easy to select multiple files when in Tablet mode. Luckily, Windows Vista changed this to make it a lot easier to navigate via Windows Explorer and use the Tablet functionality of your Tablet PC. It may not seem like a big difference at first glance, but it matters.

When you hover over any group of files with your Tablet PC pen, a checkbox appears to the left of the file. Tapping this box will check it and allow you to continue selecting more files. Once all the files you need are selected, you can then move, copy or delete them as a single group.

If Tablet checkboxes aren’t already enabled on your Tablet PC (or UMPC), it’s simple to add them:

  1. Open a folder (such as Documents)
  2. Tap or click ‘Organize’
  3. Choose Folder and Search Options
  4. Select View tab
  5. Click or tap ‘Use check boxes to select items’
  6. Click OK

You can now select multiple files by using the checkboxes whenever

EventValidation Error

This killed me for a while. I had an ASPX (Master) page that includes some headers and footers from legacy ASP pages (reusability, maintainability). Those ASP pages were so badly designed to embed multiple forms and each forms within that does HTTP POST. So messy that I even thought of rewriting those whole headers and footers but I can’t since that will leave us with 2 sets to maintain.

When I started using the headers and footers in the ContentPlaceholder in my Master Pages it kept complaining about this error,

Invalid postback or callback argument. Event validation is enabled using <pages enableEventValidation=”true”/> in configuration or <%@ Page EnableEventValidation=”true” %> in a page. For security purposes, this feature verifies that arguments to postback or callback events originate from the server control that originally rendered them. If the data is valid and expected, use the ClientScriptManager.RegisterForEventValidation method in order to register the postback or callback data for validation.

After looking around for help there was nothing that lead me to a solution. Accidentally I found out by myself that it was because of the embedded <form>s that it complained. After working around with those forms to make sure that only one <form> get rendered on the

Google Plans Search Service for Mobile Content

Google Inc. is developing a new search service for cellphones that will help consumers find and buy ringtones, games and other mobile content as the Internet company pushes more deeply into wireless, people familiar with the matter say.

Google already offers cellphone users a version of its popular engine for searching the Web. Now the company wants to go beyond just looking up Web pages, effectively becoming a gateway for finding and paying for mobile media content.

With the new system, users would search for a piece of content — say, a U2 ringtone — and get back a list of providers as well as links enabling them to easily purchase the material. Eventually, Google would charge companies for high placement in the search results, much the way it offers “sponsored links” on computer Web searches, the people familiar with the plans say.

The company has been working for months with content providers — including large entertainment companies and smaller mobile-media aggregators — to index their material and make it available via mobile search. But the project has been marred by a series of technical delays, people familiar with the matter say, illustrating that there’s a learning…
