Whether you are seriously considering moving your desktops to Windows Vista or just simply contemplating about it, I highly encourage you to grab your favorite latte or beverage, sit back and read about this great story – one that illustrates how an IT pro had become an instant hero in this company.

Windows Vista Hardware Assessment, Sumeeth Evans

Meet Sumeeth Evans - IT Manager of the Collegiate Housing Services (CHS).  Situated just about 2 hours south of the Great Lake Michigan, CHS manages student housing programs for 27 post-secondary campuses in 13 states across the nation.  Late last year (2006), Sumeeth started planning for migrating his company’s computers to Windows Vista but estimated that it could cost $76,000 to get the job done – he assumed that most of his Windows XP machines might not support Windows Vista due the hardware requirements.  Fortunately, he joined the Windows Vista Hardware Assessment beta program and

Windows Vista Hidden Boot Screen

Windows Vista Hidden Boot ScreenTired of the old Windows Vista default Boot Screen? Well then, there is a simple alternative solution involving nothing more than your copy of the operating system. And just a tad of tweaking, but nothing extensive, and certainly nothing that would cause Vista to become instable or unusable. The fact of the matter is that you will only have to make use of one of the system maintenance tools that ships by default with the platform. And of course that the first tool coming to mind is the System Configuration Utility, or msconfig.

In order to access the System Configuration Utility all you have to do is enter “msconfig” in the Search Box under the Start Menu. (more…)

Google Debuts Download PDF Feature

Google-Debuts-Download-PDF-Feature-2The Patent Search technology owned by Google was improved with a pretty useful function that allows users to download a certain patent in PDF format. Until you, you were able to view a patent only on the search results page without having the possibility to download and view it in offline mode. As blogger Ionut Alex reported, “the option is available from the overview page and in the sidebar, when you browse the patent.” Google Patent Search was quite an anonymous technology as the Mountain View company didn’t promote it too often. Although some of the users are claiming that the technology is quite useless and provides irrelevant results, Google Patent Search is a simple way to search the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Windows Reboots Triggered Skype Glitch

FRANKFURT, Germany - A two-day outage that left millions of Skype users unable to use the popular Internet phone service was caused by an abnormally high number of restarts after people had downloaded a Windows security update, the company said Monday.

The worldwide outage, which began on Thursday and ended on Saturday, left millions of Skype users unable to log on to make phone calls or send instant messages.

Luxembourg-based Skype Ltd., part of online auction giant eBay Inc. (nasdaq: EBAY - news - people ), has more than 220 million users in total but typically has 5 million to 6 million users online at any given time. In January, Skype reported that it had counted 9 million users online at one time.

In an update to users on Skype’s Heartbeat blog, employee Villu Arak said the disruption was not because of hackers or any other malicious activity.

Instead, he said that the disruption “was triggered by a massive restart of our users’ computers across the globe within a very short timeframe as they re-booted after receiving a routine set of patches through Windows Update,” Arak wrote.
