Hotmail Omar Shahine.

Person†¦

Open source is supposed to be a way of simplifying licensing issues and sharing your software/music/video/other content with the masses — freely and magnanimously. Problem is, what happens when something open source is found to be a (possible) violation of some else’s rights? What happens to its derivatives? Do they just pack up shop and find something else, or are they legally responsible for their actions? In what seems poised to become a landmark case on this issue, we’re about to find out.

A Texan family is now suing Virgin Mobile for using a photo of their daughter, Alison Chang, in an ad campaign – the catch is, it was released by the photographer on Flickr under the Creative Commons Attribution license, and that’s where Virgin Mobile got the photo from. The problem is, the girl featured in the photo had no idea her photo was being used – or that it was released under the Creative Commons license.

As the case currently stands, the Changs are suing consumers of open source works and not the original party responsible for the release of the work as an open source material without a proper media consent form.

Encrypt Drive with BitLocker

We’ve done a few post on BitLocker around some of the more advanced features and controls. The one thing we haven’t touched yet is just how easy it is to encrypt your drive with BitLocker. Before we get started on the procedure a little review of the options you can choose is in order.

  • TPM Only - This is the easiest to deploy and use. Everything happens in the background invisible to the user.
  • Dongle Only - This is used with systems that do not have a TPM 1.2 chip. Rather than store the ket in TPM it stores it on a USB key which must be insterted prior to booting the PC
  • TPM + PIN - This is more secure. In effect it is a form of two factor authentication, what you have (the TPM chip with the key) and what you know (the PIN)
  • Dongle + PIN - This is another form of two factor authentication again for older systems with no TPM 1.2 chip

Personally I prefer TPM + PIN as I usually store my USB keys in my notebook bag. Should that ever get lost or stolen the person has all they need to get access

Summer 08 Internship at Jackson Fish

L’Atelier de JFM

The people who helped design Windows Vista, “They’re Beautiful” and “Tafiti” are looking for interns to join their gig! The talented crew over at the Jackson Fish Market are looking for developers and designers for the summer of 2008 to be part of their new internship program. The sell, apart from their cool studio, free snacks, Lego and the Wii, includes the rare opportunity to actually ship an entirely new product in the 12 week program, everything from concepts to launch. Fully paid of course.

Working at startups seems to be the new fad so this is definitely a good opportunity for anybody remotely interested in designing quality software experiences.
