Giving Windows Server 2008 RC0 a try in Virtual PC 2007

On top of releasing Windows Vista SP1 to a broad set of beta testers last week, the Windows Server Division also released Release Candidate 0 of Windows Server 2008. I used to work for a local ISP a few years ago and managed their Windows Server boxes running Windows Server 2003. I acquired skills in Active Directory management and IIS management - although very basic. I really wanted to try out the changes in IIS7 as well as changes coming to Active Directory in Windows Server 2008. I decided to fire up Windows Server 2008 RC0 in Virtual PC 2007.

Windows Server 2008 in Virtual PC shows up on my home network as if it were an actual PC - with a real IP address and all.

I haven’t gotten around to testing Windows Server 2008 RC0 as a domain controller just yet. It currently sits on my home network serving as a web server (when fired up in Virtual PC). I used IIS7 to configure the server for “standard web hosting” - testing out using Microsoft Expression Web

Get the Office 2007 Compatibilty pack

Weather you like it or not, Office 2007 is slowly starting to creep into corporate networks around you. The biggest problem with this change is the totally different file format.

Office 2007 Box

A while back we released a command line utility, and added a feature to our Network Administrator product that could force your users to save in the old format. That way if you have not totally upgraded all of your network yet, you can still open office documents with the older versions. Better yet you won’t get helpdesk calls asking why no one outside the company can read their documents.

The problem I see now is companies that have decided to wait, are now getting more and more documents emailed to them in the new format. To solve this problem, Microsoft has released the Office 2007 Compatibility pack.

It works with Office 2000, XP, and 2003. It allows you to open and save documents in the new format.

I have installed it on computers around the office here, and it works quite well. I recommend it.

Hacked GOP Site Infects Visitors with Malware
The now-infamous Storm Trojan horse is using new distribution methods to attack unsuspecting victims. Where it once used e-mail attachments or embedded links in spam, it has now turned to website exploits, recently infecting PC users through a Republican party website in Wisconsin, USA.

Great Firewall of China More Like Chain-Link Fence
Researchers at the University of California at Davis and the University of New Mexico have proven that banned terms can slip through the government-imposed firewall for Internet surfing in China. Even with the occasional slip in security, most citizens still avoid searching for banned terms and concepts for fear that their Internet activity is being monitored by the Chinese government.

Smartphones Open the Door to New Mobile Threats

They are sleek, they are powerful, and they are a wish list standard.  Smartphones, like iPhone and BlackBerry, are creating a collective buzz that can be heard worldwide.

The hype is well deserved.  Mobile devices have matured and with their coming of age we now have capabilities that seemed far-fetched only a few years ago.  For employees and executives the world over, smartphones make corporate data and applications available anytime, anywhere.

But just as a smartphone is now capable of downloading data and applications wirelessly, so can it download viruses, spyware, even pornographic content, without a user’s consent.  The use of flash memory cards on some phones opens yet another door for malware to spread to these devices.

The threat is real and growing.  A recent PC World article reports that malware writers are ramping up their activity in the mobile arena, learning from proof-of-concept threats and fine-tuning the amount of user interaction required to propagate the damage.

According to SMobile Systems, a company that specializes in mobile security, there are over 400 wireless threats currently, and more are predicted to arise by year’s end.  The threats can take many forms.  Among the attacks are those that attempt to delete data, those that
