Error in registry for extension “Exchange Extensions;?”

Yes it is a strange error message. After removing McAfee Anti-Virus from one of my machines I kept getting this each time I launched Outlook:

Exchange Extensions Error

I thought I could stop the error by going into advanced options and disable the old McAfee extensions. Unfortunately - nothing from McAfee was there

Outlook Extensions

After doing some searching over at MS I found this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823633

The short version is:

Drill down to this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Extensions

The delete the value named “Exchange Extensions”

Then launch Outlook again. Now the errors are gone, and Outlook will recreate the key.

I also realized that this bug was fixed in SP1 of Outlook 2003, so I promptly upgraded it so I would not have it happen again.

Lastly, it seems that the removal of McAfee was only coincidental - According to the MS fix these are the steps you can take to reproduce the error:

1. Send an e-mail message to a recipient by using the following method:
Right-click an object, point to Send To, and then click Mail Recipient.

2. Wait 24 hours or more.

3. Send a second e-mail message to a recipient by using the method that is described in step 1.

I had already upgraded to SP1, so I couldn’t try it out and see if this really was the problem, either way I am glad it was an easy fix.

Windows Vista Multilingual User Interface

Multilingual User Interface packs for Windows Vista and Windows XP Professional are not as easy to come by as Microsoft partners and customers would expect. The general presumption seems to be that the MUI packs are available as separate downloads from the Redmond Company. This is not the case. Far from it in fact. The MUI packs are designed to provide support for multiple languages during the operating system’s installation. Microsoft has applauded that fact that its latest operating system will change the strategy associated with multiple languages. There is however a little detail that Microsoft failed to emphasize, the MUI packs are not available for all Windows Vista editions.

“We advise that the MUI for Vista is not available as a separate product and that this functionality is included in the Windows Vista Ultimate and Enterprise Editions. (more…)

Turn Windows Vista Features On or Off

I have said this before and I am going to say it again. Windows Vista gives the user an unprecedented level of control, compared to older versions of the Windows platform. This despite minor setbacks from Patch Guard, Kernel Mode Code Signing and the User Account Control. And “Turn Windows features on or off” is just such an example. I managed to come across this functionality when my Windows Vista Business operating system installed by default without the games that ship with the operating system.

Initially I blamed the operating system and the limitations associated with a modest Windows Experience Score. Since my graphic card is mediocre to say the least, but just enough to run Windows Aero, and on this machine I do not need more, I thought that there was a connection between the lack of horsepower and Vista settings which did not allow me access to the default games of the operating system. Nothing could be further from the truth, after all the games also ship with Windows Vista Home Basic, and this version of the operating system is created to run on low end system configurations. Video Tutorials on Metacafe

I’ve got a lot of requests lately to publish video tutorials on my site.
Since this site revolves around my work as a Network Administrator I do not have a lot of time to make them (I can make blog postings at work, that is allowed) but I can not make video tutorials at my work.

But I’m going to create video tutorials anyway, but I will make them at home.

The first one will be about installing windows 2008 on a vmware server.
I’m currently editing that one so expect the video here soon.

Windows updates - XP ends soon, Vista late with SP1

As with each version of Microsoft’s OS’s there is a end of life, specifically when it comes to “officially” supporting it with updates. I remember when Windows NT reached the end not too long ago. …
