Looking for a good movie to rent?

I posted this a while ago but I’ve decided to refresh the post since there are a lot more readers now than when I first posted this.

Look for a copy of ”Pirates of Silicon Valley”. Based upon the book, Fire in the Valley: The Making of The Personal Computer, by Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine, this film documents the rise of the home computer/personal computer through the rivalry between Apple Computer and Microsoft. Here’s a clip…

PCAnswers.Co.Uk: Why my new laptop is a Macbook

Grrr…For £700 I could have bought a high-spec laptop that enabled me to play some games, but instead I decided to buy an Apple Macbook. This will no doubt be sacrilege to some PC users, but let me explain my decision. I already have a games capable PC, which is far more easily upgradable, so there seems little point in going for a laptop that would only be able to play games for a year or so, before the hardware demands exceeded the laptop’s specifications. In addition, with Apple’s Boot Camp, you effectively get two laptops for the price of one, because I can and do run Windows on it, alongside OS X. However, the biggest reason for switching to OS X is that I’m sick and tired of dealing with all the security issues that are associated with Windows. Read the full article on PCAnswers.Co.Uk

Hitachi achieves nanotechnology milestone for quadrupling terabyte hard drive

TOKYO, Oct. 15, 2007 — Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT / TSE: 6501) and Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (Hitachi GST), announced today they have developed the world’s smallest read-head technology for hard disk drives, which is expected to quadruple current storage capacity limits to four terabytes (TB) on a desktop hard drive and one TB on a notebook hard drive.

Researchers at Hitachi have successfully reduced existing recording heads by more than a factor of two to achieve new heads in the 30-50 nanometer (nm) range, which is up to 2,000 times smaller than the width of an average human hair (approx. 70-100 microns). Called current perpendicular-to-the-plane giant magneto-resistive*1 (CPP-GMR) heads, Hitachi’s new technology is expected to be implemented in shipping products in 2009 and reach its full potential in 2011.

Hitachi will present these achievements at the 8th Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Conference (PMRC 2007), to be held 15th -17th October 2007, at the Tokyo International Forum in Japan.

“Hitachi continues to invest in deep research for the advancement of hard disk drives as we believe there is no other technology capable of providing the hard drive’s high-capacity, low-cost value for the foreseeable future,” said Hiroaki Odawara, Research Director, Storage Technology Research Center, Central

ITsVISTA Tip 62: Save power in Vista, save the world

Blog Action DayAs I write this, it’s Blog Action Day, when bloggers around the web unite to put a single important issue on everyone’s mind. This year it is the environment. How does Vista relate to the environment? It uses resources, and by reducing the resources it uses, you can help reduce it’s effect on the environment. So here’s a tip on how to reduce Vista’s thirst for power.

  1. Click on the Start menu and in the Search box type Power. You should see Power Options appear as an available Program, click it or press Enter if it is already selected.
    Power Options
  2. In the Power Options window, click the Power Saver plan.
    Power Saver
  3. That’s it! By choosing the Power Saver plan, you’ve set your monitor to turn off after 20 minutes of no use, and to put the computer to sleep after 1 hour of no use.
  4. If you’d like to go further and save even more power, in the Power Options window, click on Change Plan
