New Wine help and discussion forum

Today the new Wine help and discussion forum at wine-forum.org went live, the forums are meant to be a meeting place for anyone interested in Wine usage or development. In the past there there has never been a single forum dedicated just to Wine. In the past the Wine project has used mailing lists, newsgroups and other methods for user discussion leaving many postings about Wine in other forums where Wine was always relegated as a sub-forum.

We at Wine-Review hope the forum brings Wine users together into a single meeting place where they can discuss anything relevant to the daily happenings surrounding Wine. We have set up five main categories, Applications, Games, 3rd Party Wine Utilities, Commercial Wine offerings, as well as a category (Architecture) for FreeBSD, Mac, and Solaris users.

We would like to cordially invite anyone interested in Wine to register and join the conversation today.

Vista fonts in Wine

Last month I posted about Microsoft’s PowerPoint 2007 Viewer with Wine. Even if you don’t need the PowerPoint 2007 Viewer it bundles Microsoft’s new Vista fonts that may become useful as more Windows users move over to Vista.

Back in the 90’s Microsoft donated their standard Web Core Fonts that most every browser uses and those fonts remained unchanged up to Windows XP. With the release of Windows Vista, Microsoft has released 6 new web fonts (all begin with C as in core) Cambria, Calibri, Candara, Consolas, Constantia, and Corbel.

In addition to the above fonts, Vista also ships with Nyala and Segoe however these fonts are not a part of the free download and are unavailable, legally, to non-Vista/Office owners.

Non-vista, Windows users can get the new fonts by downloading and installing Microsoft’s Powerpoint Viewer. Installing the viewer installs the new Vista C fonts into ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts and they are, for the most part, worth the download. If you’re a web designer and not using Vista then this download is mandatory since it will let you see your page as Vista users see it.

BioEdit biological sequence alignment editor on Linux with Wine

About BioEdit

BioEdit is a mouse-driven, easy-to-use sequence alignment editor and sequence analysis program designed and written by a graduate student who knows how frustrating and time consuming it can be to rely upon word-processors and command-line programs for sequence manipulation. BioEdit is intended to supply a single program that can handle most simple sequence and alignment editing and manipulation functions that researchers are likely to do on a daily basis, as well as a few basic sequences analyses.
