introPLAY

Since I do all of my work on computers and work from my home office, you’d probably assume that I don’t get very much exercise, and you’d be correct. I’m still staying fairly slim, but that certainly doesn’t mean that I don’t need exercise. I’ve never been very big into exercising, and that makes it hard for me to think about establishing a regular routine. No matter what my excuses may be, they’re not good enough, and I need to get in shape. If you also need some motivation, then you may be interested in checking out introPLAY.

Instead of just working out and instantly forgetting what you did, introPLAY enables you to track your workouts. This can allow you to set goals for yourself and help you to see how you’ve done over a period of time. By connecting with other members in an introLEAGUE, you can even get competitive, and this could encourage you to keep up with your exercise habits. You’re not alone in your quest to become more active, and introPLAY proves that.

Computer Security — OK, So I Changed My Mind A Little…

A few weeks ago I wrote about the security applications I used on my own PC. I made the statement that I don’t like security suites, preferring stand-alone programs that tend to do one job well and take up fewer resources than the big cludgy suites like McAfee, Norton and ZoneAlarm. (Forget AOL! It should be declared an Internet traffic hazard.)

At that time I was using ESET’s excellent NOD-32 anti-virus, along with Comodo’s Firewall Pro and Comodo BOClean anti-malware, backed up with Ad-Aware SE Personal. NOD32 and Comodo Firewall Pro were the top-rated programs in their respective classes, and BOClean rates right up there along with them. Both Comodo products have the additional advantage of being free, while NOD32 is a steal at $29.95 a year for a two-year subscription.

Those are still excellent choices, together or separately. The firewall, however, had a bug that — despite my downloading and reinstalling several updates — would not go away. It would forget my allowed applications, and would randomly pop up a complaint about Firefox, or tell me that the anti-virus wanted to access the Internet. I was moderately annoyed, but it

Enabling Windows Firewall Logging In Vista

Windows Vista includes the Windows Firewall component that is designed to protect your computer when you are connected to another network. If your computer is connected to a public or untrusted network such as the Internet, it is recommended you enable it. In Windows Vista, the Firewall is enabled by default.

You may want to take this one step further and monitor the type of traffic that is being discarded by your firewall. This can be done by enabling security logging using the steps outlined below.

  1. Click Start | All Programs | Administrative Tools | Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.
  2. Click Windows Firewall Properties.
  3. Select the appropriate profile tab: Domain Profile, Private Profile or Public Profile.
  4. Click the Customize button under the Logging section.
  5. Use the drop down arrows beside Log dropped packets and Log successful connections to select Yes. This will enable logging for the option you select.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Ok to save your changes to the firewall configuration./ol>

Once you enable security logging, information is written to the pfirewall.log file that is stored in the Windows directory.

Disable Password Protection In PowerPoint 2002

Your first thought after reading the title is likely ‘Why would I want to disable password protection for my presentations?’ Any presentations that have been password protected in PowerPoint 2002, cannot be opened in earlier versions of PowerPoint, even if the user does know the password. This is because PowerPoint 2002 was the first version to introduce password protection and earlier versions do not support it.

By disabling password protection, you can eliminate any problems that may occur when sharing presentations with users that have earlier versions of the application. On the other hand, if you never share your presentations, this tip is not for you.

You can disable password protection using the steps that are described below:

  1. Within your PowerPoint presentation, click Options from the Tools menu.
  2. Click the Edit tab.
  3. Under the Disable new features section, check the Password protection option.
  4. Click OK to save your changes.
