Forever engraved in Microsoft US patent D560,487

Found this slightly amusing. In a patent awarded to Microsoft on 29 January 2008 for their Windows Vista and Office 2007 media packaging design includes a reference to no other than this very blog! The suspect in question is this post I had written in 2006 when I was speculating on the packaging design for Windows Vista after finding some interesting patent applications. Fortunately everything turned out to be true, and I guess Microsoft finally got the patent. My friend Robert McLaws always gets an honorable mention. Here’s to 14 years of fame.

Limiting Tor access with ISA 2004/2006

If you have looked into "The onion ring", or just "Tor", you have probably wondered if it would be wise to block access from these anonymous servers (or maybe just the exit nodes). I am not gonna talk about how the encrypted Tor network works, as a great deal of info can be found "out there". Main source should be: www.torproject.org - and perhaps WikiPedia.

As a security guy (or ISA administrator maybe), you ask yourself "why do these people want to be anonymous"? In this case "anonymous" means that "they" don’t want targets on the Internet to see the originating IP address (the source). A "target" is typically a web site or some other web service.

The answer? Well, first you gotta ask yourself: "who are they"? And there’s really no good answer to that question I guess - who really knows? All we can do is guess, so let me turn these questions around: if I were to try out a hack, or some new exploit, would I do it directly over my personal WAN IP? Or would I try to "hide" my originating IP? If you look at it in that

Microsoft Watch - Vista - What’s Vista’s One-Year Grade Point Average?

News Analysis. Uh-oh! Two Fs and only one A mean Vista won’t be going to the head of the class.

Windows Vista’s one-year anniversary is Wednesday. Microsoft released the software to everybody on Jan. 30, 2007. A day earlier, Microsoft held a launch gala for Vista and Office 2007 in New York.

In this post, I score how well Vista has done in 12 areas since its real launch 12 months ago. Microsoft also launched Vista on Nov. 30, 2006. But the release that matters—when businesses or consumers could buy PCs—happened two months later.

I chose attributes that I believe matter most in evaluating Vista’s real relevance, particularly in relationship to Windows XP. The scoring is my own, based on my personal experience using Windows Vista for nearly two years and on my assessment of other users’ perceptions and experiences, including Microsoft customers and partners.

Vista's One-Year Scorecard

In fairness to Microsoft, each grade should be explained:

Technology. Vista isn’t exceptionally better than XP, but nuances do matter. Improved manageability,

Fun with Quick Launch And Address Toolbar

Using these toolbars at the side of your desktop and combo it with auto-hiding function, can make your life easier with these shortcuts and your favorite apps are easily launched from this toolbar.
So let us start…

In Windows Vista

Go to the explorer and create a folder you can create a folder anywhere it doesn’t matter where but for the sake of quick recall I suggest you create the folder on your My Documents folder and you can name whatever you like for this tip I will name the folder SAMPLEFOLDER.

Drag your newly created folder to the side of your desktop or on the top of your screen for it to dock on either in the side or in the top or which ever you dragged the folder you created to.

Right-click the folder and pick Toolbars, that is where you select any toolbar that is ready to use within the system. In our sample tip try selecting the Quick Launch Toolbar.

Remove the folder that we created by right-clicking on the toolbar and choosing Toolbars and then removing the selection for the folder name SAMPLEFOLDER if that’s the name you used too.
Now you can also have the option to show
