Vista SP1 now available on Technet

Earlier I had written that Vista SP1 was available on MSDN and Technet - I was wrong. I assumed this because Microsoft had released it to manufacturing. In the past this always meant that it was on MSDN right away.

I didn't notice this because the MSDN site was getting slammed by people downloading Windows Server 2008. Once the dust settled I started looking for the RTM Vista SP1 download. I couldn't find it.

After searching around the internet I discovered that for various reasons MS was not releasing it to subscribers until the rest of the public was getting it. As you can imagine this caused a huge blow up among the paying subscribers to MSDN and Technet.

Finally, Microsoft has caved and they are now allowing Technet subscribers to download it:

Vista SP1 Technet

I will be testing it as soon as my download completes. Still the question remains - why not on MSDN? Don't developers need to see this release early too?

Windows 7 ‘HomeGroup’: rebirth of Longhorn ‘Castle’?

Windows 7 HomeGroup

Half a decade after its initial conception, Windows Codename Longhorn still proves to be a great source of ideas. One of which known as “Castle”, appears to have been revived to be a feature of Windows 7 as “HomeGroup”.

We know what Workgroups are - Microsoft’s implementation of a peer-to-peer computer network for Windows to share files, printers and other resources. So what are HomeGroups?

That mystery didn’t last very long as someone was kind enough to point me to some well-aged reading material which described exactly what Castle was, and the same person claims what HomeGroups are about to become.

The document I am referencing is the Windows “Longhorn” Pre-Release Privacy Statement (Microsoft.com hosted), published October 24, 2003 for those of you playing along. This was a legal document to give users of pre-release versions of Longhorn an outline of the data collection and use practices of any network-related features that was in Longhorn at the time. Castle happens to be one of them.

It writes, I quote and highlight,

Castle

What This Feature Does:
The “castle” feature allows users to have the networking functionality of the domain, including roaming the user’s profile, machine trust and having a

Information on the Windows Vista SP1 activation hack

My post on the Vista SP1 activation hack has generated a lot of feedback (especially in the form of questions) from both individuals and other media outlets. I’ve put together this post in order to answer some of these questions.

First off, the hack. The hack in question is another OEM BIOS hack but packaged under the name of Vista Loader. This hack is similar to the Paradox OEM BIOS. The Paradox hack was the most commonly used Vista activation hack (which is why Microsoft pulled the plug on it) but this one seems to have been quite popular, so I’m not sure why Microsoft didn’t pull the plug on this one too. Since other outlets have now named this hack as working on Vista SP1 I don’t have any problem with naming it here.

As you can see from the video above (or the gallery - I’ve put up a separate gallery because the video is rather small), this hack can take a non-genuine Vista SP1 installation and turn it into one that appears genuine to the OS.

After the reboot you can see a product key being entered - this is one of many...
