How to install GPP CSEs using a Startup Script

When you have the Group Policy Preference (GPP) Client Side Extensions (CSE) downloaded you'll notice that they are not (yet) in the .MSI format - so using Group Policy Software Installation (GPSI) is not possible. Bummer, right!?

We have .EXE files for Windows XP/2003 and .MSU files for Windows Vista... But that's not the only thing we need to think about. Before "deploying" these things to the clients on the network we need to know the OS version (XP/2003/Vista), the OS architecture (32 or 64 bit), the Service Pack Level, and whether or not the Group Policy Preference Pre-requisites (WmlLite - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914783/en-us) are installed.

To make all this pretty easy I've created a "demo" script for deploying the GPP CSEs using Startup Script - or a manual launch (in admin context). My good friend Jeremy Moskowitz asked me to do this - so, a couple of hours later the "demo" - or "beta" - script is public (download below)...

Note: I haven't been able to test in all scenarios yet, but I *think* they are all covered pretty well by now. Please report back if you find any problems - any feedback is welcome!

Download the VBS script right here!

NB! You might need other language version for the XmlLite GPP CSE Pre-requisites, so watch out!

Running the script in your production network is on your own risk. The code is delivered "As Is" - totally free of any charge. No strings attached.

I hope this works out nicely for you!

More spelling and grammar information from Word

I doubt many people do not make use the spellchecking facility in MS Word. Most people probably run a grammar check too. Nevertheless, few people will use Word’s readability statistics report.

To switch this report on, open the ‘Tools’ menu in Word and click on ‘Options’, select the ‘Spelling & Grammar’ tab, tick the ‘Show Readability Statistics’ box, and click ‘OK’.

Now, when you click on the ‘Spelling and Grammar’ button (shown left), Word will go through any errors it finds in the selected text, or the whole text if none is selected, and then it will show you the ‘Readability Statistics’ report.

This report is particularly useful to anyone who wishes to make their writing more legible. The report not only contains general information about the number of words, characters and sentences etc, but also the average number of sentences per paragraph, words per sentence and the like.

The bottom section includes three very useful measures. The first gives a percentage of the number of passive sentences in the selected text. As you may know, the active voice makes a text more readable, so it is best to avoid the passive voice when possible. There is a good tutorial about the difference between the voices here.

The second and third measures, the Flesch reading ease and the Flesch-Kincaid grade level, show how difficult a text is to comprehend according to mathematical equations. More details on these equations and an explanation of the scales are available here.

While Cruising around the net I found this nifty pogram for windows explorer windows. Want to browser your Harddrive more quickly? do it with tabbed bar, Thus saving valuable space while browsing your hard drive. Add tabbed browsing to Explorer with the free QT TabBar. Download, extract, and install. Log off and on again, then hop into Explorer. Right-click the menu bar and add both QT TabBar and QT Tab Standard Buttons to the display.

Now this tabs work much like they do in Firefox, with some new tricks available: Dragging a file from one window to another tab in order to move it to another folder is an especially nifty Tabbed file browsing puts an end to cascading convenience. Explorer windows.

Works with Vista as well as XP (with .Net 2.0 installed), and is definitely worth a try. And the best thing of all, Its free !
