Keyboard shortcut of the week: The Case of MS Word

When using a word processor it is quite common to forget that that the CapsLock key has been left on, or you might decide that a piece of text looks better in capital letters (also known as upper case: small letters are known as lower case).

Thankfully MS Word has a keyboard shortcut that lets you cycle between different cases and formats. All you need to do is highlight a piece of text, hold down the Shift key and press F3.

Each time you press F3 the case of the letters will change (don’t release the Shift key!). So, ‘testing’ will be replaced with ‘Testing’ on the first press, and ‘TESTING’ if you press it a second time. Press F3 again and the text will return to ‘testing’.

If you type ‘tESTING’ by mistake, you can change it to ‘testing’, then ‘Testing’, and ‘TESTING’; however, it will not return to ‘tESTING’, probably because it is highly unlikely you’d ever want text to be in that format.

[Addendum]

As one commentator has pointed out, a particular word does not need to be highlighted to have its case changed by this method, all you need to do…

Sidebar gadget brings WebSlices to the desktop

WebSlices on desktop

WebSlices, meet desktop. Desktop, meet the web. Sean Lyndersay, ironically a former Microsoft IE developer (now Live Search), has developed a rather ingenuous solution to display WebSlices on the desktop using a very simple Sidebar gadget he calls the “WebSlice Viewer Gadget“. It’s still in alpha so it’s all Microsoft’s fault if it breaks.

WebSlice Viewer Gadget OptionsIn a nutshell, because WebSlices are actually stored as feeds inside the native Windows RSS platform, desktop applications including Sidebar gadgets can very simply fetch and display the data without much hassle. In this case, it couldn’t be any simpler to pick the WebSlice you want to display in the gadget, and have it appear in a simple frame on the desktop.

I think many people underestimated the potential of WebSlices by implying it was redundant in IE8 because you could just as easily load the full page which is true inside a browser, I think this gadget outside of the browser is a much better example of demonstrating where “subscribing” to a portion of content on the web is extremely convenient and powerful.

Also as opposed to RSS where you’re subscribing

Setting up a categorized contact list

The people that the students will be working with are from India and France, as well as from South Dakota, Oklahoma, and Idaho in the United States. There are scientists, literature teachers, soybean farmers, engineers, and nurses from each country. As the students meet with each individual for the first time to learn who they are, where they're from, and what they do, the students can add that information to their Outlook Contacts lists by using categories.

By using categories to identify each contact, students can group them easily and then create distribution lists.

To organize your contact list

  1. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Contact.
  2. Enter the name for the contact and any other pertinent information, such as e-mail address.
  3. Click Categories.
  4. Click the categories that apply to that contact.
  5. Click OK.

The students may find that they need to create new custom categories for the
