Old School Icons - Free Download

I know everybody is thinking, “Why do I put so many old theme icons on the site?”. The answer is because they look so cool and I think they look the best on any desktop. My favorite icon in this pack is the brush and bucket. I promise the next featured icon will not have an old theme.

Vista UltimateDark Theme - Free Download

This Vista theme has achieved a great balance between being dark but not depressing. I like the black and gray Start menu and taskbar. Even the transparency effect is dark which gives this theme a cool feel. I like the blue and green laser background better then the leaf one because it brings a great flow to the whole package.

If you want to use this theme on any version of Windows XP, you have to download the XP Theme Patcher.

Giveaway: HP Pavilion HDX “Dragon” Notebook

I’ve given away some mousepads, headwear, reading material and a couple of software licenses before but I think this might top all of that in terms of size, weight, usefulness and most importantly, value.

Some of you might remember the HP Pavilion HDX 9000 “Dragon” Entertainment Notebook (possibly inspired by War and Peace) computer I reviewed last September, well there’s no better way to put it except HP is giving 31 (thirty-one) of them away. This site will be giving away one of them.

If the sheer number of them isn’t existing enough, the upgraded model they’re giving away is actually not even fresh on the market. The specifications include:

  • Operating system: Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core2 Extreme Processor X9000 (2.80GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
  • Display: 20.1″ diagonal WUXGA High-Definition HP Ultra Brightview Widescreen (1920×1200)
  • Memory: 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
  • Graphics Card: 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS
  • Personalization: HP Imprint Finish (Dragon) + Fingerprint Reader + Webcam + Microphone

XP SP3 vs. Vista SP1 - Which is fastest?

In the TalkBack section on my post looking at SP3 benchmarks, _deitrich asked a really good question: Adrian, how about a comparison of XP SP3 vs Vista SP1? Oui? C’est possible?

Good question! Fortunately I’ve already done a fair bit of the groundwork in that I used the Phenom 9700 system I have for benchmarking both XP SP3 and Vista SP1.

I benchmarked both operating systems using PassMark PerformanceTest 6.1 and bringing together the results from both tests allows me to answer _deitrich’s question.

Note: The hardware configuration of the Phenom 9700 remained unchanged between the two tests and similar optimizations steps were carried out for each OS.

XP Professional:

* XP RTM
PassMark rating: 1001.4
* XP SP2
PassMark rating: 891
* XP SP3
PassMark rating: 990.8
