Defrag Individual Files With Defraggler

Defraggler - Defrag files

Piriform brings us another useful free utility for our daily use called Defraggler. It is the same company that also brought tools like CCleaner and Recuva. What makes it different from other defrag tools is that it allows you to easily defrag files individually, without having to process the whole drive. This makes the task easier, and way faster than the default Disk Defragmenter in Windows OS.

Features

  • Defrag individual files
  • Compact and portable
  • Locate files on the drive
  • Vista compatible

For more details on these features, click here.

It is recommended that you use it for personal-testing only because currently it is in beta stage and may contain bugs.

The Most Annoying message next to UAC: “This Driver is Blocked Due to Compatibility Issues”

program compatability issues

This is the most annoying message that I ever encountered in Windows Vista. Every time I boot my computer it always give the message, And you can’t stop it easily!

Driver: Sonic Solutions DLA
Publisher: Sonic Solutions

It seems that tons of people have had this problem with Roxio. This old problem started after the release of Windows Vista but until now (Windows Vista Service Pack 1), it still exists! (Lenovo / IBM ThinkPad , HP, DELL, and other computer and laptop manufacturer)

driverblock2

"Yes I know, Leave me alone!"

THE DRIVER PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY OTHER DRIVERS

This is the most difficult one. Some Device Manufacturer’s are too lazy to update their drivers.

SOLUTION

There is no quick solution to the problem. Anyway, here’s my tip: Go to the Manufacturer’s Website and find the patch or fix. If you can’t find it, uninstall everything or RESOLVE the problem using Windows System Restore.

Prevention Tip: Before installing any device or software Create a restore point and 2008/06/add-restore-point-to-your-context-menu.html”>Add "Create a Restore Point" to your Context Menu

The Most Popular ROXIO PROBLEM

Most of them are DELL laptops and computers pre-installed with ROXIO which is cause by Roxio drag-to disc software that has a compatibility issue even in Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

Thankfully, Roxio released a patch regarding the problem and my problem was fixed. here:

DLA driver blocked on Vista launch

If your problem still continues… Try the update through DELL Technical Support

Dell Technical Support

"Microsoft Windows Vista may report that Sonic® Drive Letter Access or Roxio® Drag-to-Disc is incompatible. However, an update is now available to resolve this error. - DELL"

Last Resort: The Simplest Solution? Download the latest software of Drag-to Disc from Roxio Site (15.1mb) and just follow the instructions while installing the latest update:
http://docs.roxio.com/patches/d2d3290.exe

That’s it! I hope this helps…

Using MediaCoder to transcode videos for Zune

The Zune is great for watching movies, TV shows and YouTube clips of cute kittens, but sometimes it can take a good chunk of time and a bit of magic getting your videos ready and loaded on the Zune. There’s nothing worse than having spent a good 30 minutes transcoding an axxo-ripped XVID movie (yes you know what I’m talking about) into WMV, added to the Zune library for it to spend another 30 minutes transcoding it again because it wasn’t the particular type of WMV it was fond of.

I’ve tried this and I’ve tried that, Encode360 was good up and until a few video formats it just had difficulties with.

Just recently, I’ve finally found the perfect codec settings for the free MediaCoder software to transcode just about any video I throw at it and would sync without a second conversion. Do try this at home.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of MediaCoder. There’s a new version of this app almost every other week so it’s good to get the latest version whenever possible.

Step 2: Download and install the MediaCoder Extra Codecs Pack. This allows MediaCoder to handle a wider number of video formats you may want to transcode, for example Flash Video.

Step 3: Download and install the Microsoft Windows Media Format 11 SDK. MediaCoder uses the native SDK to output the otherwise proprietary WMV compliant files.

Step 4: Run MediaCoder. (If you encounter an error, download and install the Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package).

Step 5: Download my preset with the codec settings. Load the preset from MediaCoder under “File” then “Load Preset”.

Step 6: Now drag and drop any video you wish to convert into the blank list. Click “Start” to begin transcoding them. (If your MediaCoder crashes, do not click on the video in the list. Sometimes it’ll crash trying to fetch the video details. Click “Start” straight after the videos are in the list to avoid this.)

Step 7: Once the videos are done, rename them from the default title of “MediaCoder Clip” by right clicking on them, “Properties” and in the “Details” tab.

Step 8: If you have an automatic sync already set up for your Zune videos, move the videos to that folder. If not, open the Zune software and switch to the “Videos” tab. Drag and drop the converted video into the content area. Once populated, right click on it and select “Sync”.

Step 9: Enjoy.

If you’re curious what the codec settings in the preset file are exactly, they are as follows. You can increase the video framerate to around 1000 KBps to increase the quality, but it’s going to be hard to tell on the smaller screen anyway.

  • Video
    • Format: Windows Media
    • Codec: Windows Media Video 9
    • Mode: Bitrate-based
    • Bitrate: 768 Kbps
    • Resolution: 320×240
    • Frame rate: 25 fps
  • Audio
    • Encoder: Windows Media Audio
    • Codec: Windows Media Audio 9.2
    • Resample: 44100 Hz
    • Mode: CBR
    • Bitrate: 192 Kbps

Read a book at work (without the boss knowing)

preview image

This is probably the best use of a Windows desktop clone ever. Colenso BBDO, a New Zealand advertising agency (who have done some really spectacular work) came up with this innovative idea to disguise literature as PowerPoint presentations to encourage people reading at work (without being told off) on behalf of the New Zealand Book Council.

The result, is a Windows XP clone presented in a fullscreen Flash application complete with a login screen, start menu, folders and windows. After you’ve browsed the titles available categorized by genre as folders, double clicking on them will launch a full-screen slideshow in the style of a PowerPoint presentation. Here’s where it takes it to the next level. The text is divided amongst the headings, subheadings, paragraphs, bullet points and even diagrams. Everyone around you would be none the wiser.

Even if you’re not at work, take a quick look at “Read at Work“. Where this concept falls short is if your workplace uses Windows Vista, the fake Windows XP desktop would be a dead giveaway, but apparently none do anyway.

What is New in IIS 7.0

IIS 7.0 has been re-engineered at its core to deliver a modular and extensible Web server platform, forming the foundation for lean, low-footprint Web servers that power customized workloads and Web applications. The new extensible architecture enables the Web server to be completely customized; you can select only the required IIS features and add or replace them with new Web server features that leverage the new rich extensibility application programming interfaces (APIs). In addition, the Web server enables the use of a new distributed configuration system and management tools that simplify Web server deployment and management. The core feature set of IIS 7.0 continues to leverage the reliability and security-focused architecture established by its predecessor, IIS 6.0, and it adds additional improvements to enhance the reliability and security of the Web server platform. IIS 7.0 also includes extended support for application frameworks, including better integration with ASP.NET and built-in support for FastCGI-compliant application frameworks.

Among its many improvements, IIS 7.0 delivers the following:

Modular Web server architecture. Unlike its monolithic predecessors, IIS 7.0 is a completely modular Web server, containing more than 40 components that the administrator can individually install to create low-footprint, reduced surface-area Web server deployments that play a specific role in the application topology. Furthermore, the new extensibility architecture enables any of the built-in modular features to be replaced with customized implementations that Microsoft and third parties provide.

.NET Extensibility through ASP.NET integration. The new ASP.NET integration capabilities enable you to develop IIS 7.0 features with the power of ASP.NET and the .NET Framework, reducing development and maintenance costs for custom Web server solutions. You can use existing ASP.NET services in this mode to enhance any application technologies, even those that were not developed with ASP.NET in mind. These abilities enable Web applications using IIS 7.0 to further customize the Web server to their needs without incurring the higher development costs associated with the previously used Internet Server Application Programming Interface (ISAPI).

Enhanced application framework support. In addition to improved ASP.NET integration for extending the Web server, IIS 7.0 provides more options for hosting other application frameworks. This includes the built-in support for the FastCGI protocol, a protocol used by many open source application frameworks such as PHP Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) so that they can be reliably hosted in a Windows environment.

Distributed configuration system with delegation support. IIS 7.0 replaces the centralized metabase configuration store with a new configuration system based on a distributed hierarchy of XML files, which enables applications to control their own configuration. The new configuration system enables simplified application deployment without the overhead of required administrative involvement and provides the foundation for more flexible Web server configuration management.

Improved management tools. IIS 7.0 offers a host of management tools that leverage the new configuration system to provide more flexible and simpler configuration management for the Web server. This includes a brand new task-based IIS Manager tool, which offers remote delegated management; a new tool for command line management (Appcmd); and several APIs for managing Web server configuration from scripts, Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), and .NET Framework programs.

Enhanced diagnostics and troubleshooting. IIS 7.0 provides diagnostic features to help diagnose Web server errors and troubleshoot hard-to-reproduce conditions with a Failed Request Tracing infrastructure. The diagnostic tracing features are integrated with ASP.NET applications to facilitate end-to-end diagnostics of Web applications.
