Wista Antivirus Removal Guide

Do you know what Wista Antivirus is?

DESCRIPTION

Wista Antivirus or WistaAntivirus, is a clone of Vista Antivirus 2008 which is a rogue anti-spyware program. It seems we have discovered another version of Vista Antivirus 2008 which is known to be installed without a computer user’s permission through a Trojan which can come from a fake video codec download. Wista Antivirus may closely resemble XP Antiviurs or WinAntivirusPro. After a closer examination of each of these programs we have round Wista Antivirus to be related to XP Antivirus and WinAntivirusPro.

In performing our extensive research and analyses on rogue anti-spyware programs such as Wista Antivirus, we find that many times the name of a rogue program is changed to further disguise a malicious program. We believe this is the case with Wista Antivirus. The hackers that created Wista Anvirius took Vista Antivirus and simply changed the name slightly. You cannot trust either program or the scan results because they are totally bogus.

In non-techie terms: Wista Antivirus is no different from Vista Antivirus, XP Antivirus or any related rogue anti-spyware program. If installed, they all perform malicious actions such as creating popups and system alerts scaring you into purchasing the full version of the program. Do not fall for this and do not ever purchase Wista Antivirus or its variants.

Understanding the Linuxisms

The word Linux has different meanings, depending on the context in which it's referred to:

Linux kernel: Linux is the operating system that controls everything you do on your Ubuntu computer; this is technically the Linux kernel. The Linux kernel controls who can use resources like memory, disk space, and time allocated on the central processing unit (CPU).

Linus Torvalds started writing the Linux kernel in 1991 because he wasn't satisfied with any of the operating systems he had access to. Early on, he released his work to the nascent Internet and immediately hit a nerve. The power of communication and the need for such an operating system resulted in many talented people helping to make the project a success. Linus also licensed his work under the GNU General Public License (GPL), which allowed people to use, modify, and distribute his work as long as they allowed others to do the same. Using the Internet and GPL, Linux quickly exploded into worldwide use and today is second only to Microsoft Windows in use.

Linux distribution: Linux is also the overall system that consists of the Linux kernel and all the supporting systems. Ubuntu Linux is an example of this. Ubuntu is a Linux distribution that contains the Linux kernel, GNU applications, the Linux file system, a graphical environment, and many other subsystems.

Multiuser: Linux is a multiuser operating system. People can share a Linux computer. You assign separate user accounts to each person, which limits one person from interfering with another.

Multitasking: Linux is a multitasking operating system. You can run multiple programs at the same time.

Each program gets a slice of time to perform its task before being forced into the background, so that the next program in line can get its slice. Computers operate so quickly, however, that all processes appear to be running at once.

GNU: GNU is a comprehensive and free operating system project that was started in 1983 by Richard Stallman. It consists of a kernel, system utilities, libraries, compilers, and system administration programs.

GNU is a recursive acronym for GNU's Not UNIX.

The kernel wasn't released until recently, but the other parts have been very widely used for decades. Linux wouldn't be a popular operating system today if not for GNU. Many people reasonably refer to GNU Linux when talking about Linux. That makes sense because Linux, as I just mentioned, originally was just the operating system kernel. When the Linux kernel was released in 1992, it was quickly combined with GNU software to create a usable operating system. However, the powerful forces of popular lexicon, branding, and pure inertia set using the single word Linux into place.

GPL: The GNU General Public License (also referred to as the GNU Public License) was created by Richard Stallman. There are other similar licenses in use, but the GPL is their ancestor. GPL is the reason that Linux, Mozilla Firefox, and many other applications exist today.

Vista Secret Folder

This is not a registry hack. We are merely using the registry to discover CLSIDs (Class Identifiers).
The idea behind this tip is to create a folder which is invisible to the Vista indexer. Please be aware that the files are neither encrypted, nor hidden from anyone looking with Windows Explorer. To my mind this limitation confines the usefulness of this tip to special situations. However, from a learning point of view this tip is most instructive.
Topics for Vista's Secret Folder

Instructions to Create a Secret Folder
For your files to remain hidden, this secret folder needs a special extension .{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}.
Create a normal folder, for example stuff. Now rename it with this special CLSID (Class ID) extension. For this trick to work, remember both the dot and the curly brackets.
stuff.{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}

Testing your hidden files
Create a file inside your folder with the .{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683} extension. For example 'Guy Stuff.doc'. Now search for Guy Stuff.doc. You should get a negative result, Vista's search will ignore files in this folder.
Just in case you believe this negative result is due to slow indexing, create another document in a regular folder, search for that document. This time you should have a positive result.
There is a fancy variation of my tip using a different clsid extension. I say fancy, because it creates a Recycle Bin folder

Speed Start menu Search

Speed-Up Windows Vista's Start Menu SearchWhen you perform a search using the search box in the start panel, Windows Vista automatically searches the file index as well. The file index can be quite large because it includes all the files on your hard drive. One way to speed-up searching in your Start Menu applications is to narrow the scope of the search so that it does not include files on the hard drive:

Method 1: Registry Hack1.
Open registry editor using regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer and select Advanced.
3. Find and right-click on Start_SearchFiles and select Modify.
4. Set the Value to 0.
5. Restart the Explorer.exe process or reboot the computer.

Method 2: Start Button1. Right-click on the Start Button and select Properties.
2. Click on the Customize button.
3. Uncheck Search Communications.
4. Set Search Files to Don't Search for files.
5. Click OK.

Increase SATA Disk Drive Performance

You can squeeze a more performance out of your SATA hard disk drive by enabling write caching. The price though, is an increased risk for data loss/corruption should you experienced a power loss - this risk is less in a laptop because of its battery:
1. Click on the Start Button, enter Device Manager and hit Enter.
2. Expand Disk Drives.
3. Right-click on your hard disk drive and select Properties.
4. On the Policies tab, check Enable Advanced Performance.
5. Click OK and close Device Manager.
