Ed Botts Early Windows 7 Hopes

From Ed Bott's Microsoft Report

Quote:
I thought it might be interesting to arrange the feature teams into groups and discuss what I believe the real challenges of each group are. It’s important to remember that this development team is working on business, consumer, and server products, all of which will be built on the Windows 7 code base.

THE GUTS

Feature teams: Fundamentals; Kernel & VM; Security; Deployment and Component Platform

Don’t be distracted by predictions that Windows 7 will have a new kernel. It’s going to be an evolution of the kernel shared by Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008. I’ll be especially interested to see whether some form of the Hyper-V virtualization platform appears in Windows 7. If it does, I expect it will be in the enterprise version. The security challenges for Windows 7 are well known as well: refining User Account Control and hardening the kernel against new forms of attack.

Read the entire list here

I personally am looking for improvements to the Networking User Experience in Windows 7, its just too much in terms of the amount of networking related UI's.  Here is a quote from the Networking Section of the ActiveWin Windows Vista Review I did in 2007:

I love the centralization of Network and Sharing Center, in prior builds I was badly disappointed by networking overall in Vista, here is what I had to say about it:

The networking wizard looks and feels clumsy. Common links are all over the place making the layout difficult for users to understand. You have these wizards with huge title bars that make you wonder why? It’s just not well thought out, and I wish there was more focus on consistency and ironically simplicity. I believe most of the functions first introduced in XP could remain the same and some could be slightly improved. For example, the Local Area Connection properties should be an Explorer instead of this same old dialog I have been seeing since Windows 95. Its just too much clicking, I had to open Network Center then click Manage Network Connections, right click the connection, click Properties, its a chore really.

The primary focus has been lost and I think networking in Windows Vista has taken a definite step back and in some areas remains primitive. Come on, five to six windows for networking? Networking is still possible in Windows Vista and it can be accomplished with careful thought and planning. I was able to join a domain and network both my laptop and desktop using the traditional methods that we have known since prior versions of Windows dating back to Windows 95 which takes more than three clicks and seems very out of place with the changes to explorer.

5 Favorite Security & Privacy Firefox Add-ons

Firefox add-ons may help increase the security of your computer

I am a diehard Firefox junkie and I have countless plugins that just make my life better each and every day that I surf the net. Recently I have been plagued with various spyware infections obtained from different websites. It looks like many of the sites were running scripts such as ActiveX scripts or a site that forced me into downloading a so-called update to my flash player. So I set out to see if there were any Firefox plugins that assisted me in adding some additional security to my web browser.

If you are like me then you are in luck. Below are 5 of my favorite security and privacy plug-ins/add-ons for Firefox that assist you in keeping your computer secure.

  1. Dr. Web anti-virus link checker: This is an excellent plug-in tool where it actually checks any download that you initiate via the Firefox web browser. If you find yourself downloading files from a source that you are not too sure of this may ease your mind by scanning the file for viruses before download.
  2. NoScript 1.7.8: A great tool for limiting websites from running active content or scripts from sites or domains that are not trusted. Lets you choose the domains that you wish to run scripts on such as banking or other personal account sites.
  3. FormFox 1.6.2: A plug-in that displays the site that your “entered information” will go to or be sent to. Allows you to check the source that will be receiving your personal or entered text such as in search boxes or order forms.
  4. Distrust 0.8: Firefox plug-in that hides your surfing trails that the browser leaves behind. Great tool of you utilize a publicly access computer or network.
  5. CookieSafe 3.0.3: Gives you the ability to control cookie permissions. You can block or allow sites to write cookies on-the-fly with a status bar showing the status for each site.

Most of us already know that surfing the web can be just as dangerous as loosing your wallet in a bad neighborhood. Utilizing plug-ins or even 3rd party software that is reputable or tested by security vendors is always a big step to protecting your own interest when it comes to using the internet.

Firefox

The internet can be your best friend or worst friend if you do not use common since in some situations. Visiting websites that are deemed as malicious and downloading rogue software is something that we should never do but many times we cannot help the circumstances. We are in process of testing additional plug-ins that aid in the security of your computer when surfing the web so that we can help you feel better about your personal safety online. Look for our follow-up post when we test other Firefox plugins that may make your life better.

Many of the Firefox add-ons may not protect you 100% but they are a big step in helping prevent infection or theft of your information. We cannot fully rely on just an anti-virus program to keep us protected all the time.

Microsoft hints at “private browsing” feature in IE

One of the most interesting feature that didn’t quite make it into the final release of Firefox 3 is “Private Browsing”, a.k.a. porn mode. The only other browser with this feature built-in today is Safari (another reason to try it in case you haven’t), however, Microsoft may also be building a similar feature into Internet Explorer 8 if two trademark filings are any indications.

On July 30th, Microsoft filed two trademarks for:

CLEARTRACKS
IC 009. US 021 023 026 036 038. G & S: computer programs for accessing and using the Internet and the world wide web; and computer programs for deleting search history after accessing websites

INPRIVATE
IC 009. US 021 023 026 036 038. G & S: computer programs for accessing and using the Internet and the world wide web; computer programs for disabling the history and file caching features of a web browser; and computer software for notifying a user of a web browser when others are tracking web use and for controlling the information others can access about such use

Although “private browsing” can be easily associated with viewing particular genres of media content, the Mozilla foundation argues “while viewing pornography may be a popular use case due to the nature of content on the Web, assuming that this is the only reason that users need private browsing trivializes the overall feature. For instance, users may wish to begin a private browsing session to research a medical condition, or plan a surprise vacation or birthday party for a loved one.”

If indeed Microsoft is rolling out such a feature in Internet Explorer 8, I can imagine it becoming very popular with surprise birthday planners across the world. Oh those birthday people are in for a treat.
