Giving the new Games for Windows – LIVE desktop client a spin

LIVE_logo

It was noticed last week that Games for Windows – LIVE now has a new desktop client. The Games for Windows – LIVE desktop client is designed to deliver free content in the Marketplace such as game demos and videos like trailers to PC gamers. The Games for Windows – LIVE client will also deliver premium downloadable content like additional maps and levels for your games that can be purchased.

Download: Games for Windows – LIVE desktop client

I figured I’d give the new client a spin and share my experience walking through the client.

login

To login, I used the same Windows Live ID as my Xbox Live Gamertag.

main_screen

After logging in, I was presented with key gaming announcements for Games for Windows – LIVE as well as what’s new in the Marketplace, News, and Tips & Tricks. On the top left, the client has several “sections” presented sort of like tabs: Home, Marketplace, My Media, and Settings.

 marketplace

Under Marketplace – I was able to choose from a variety of content being offered such as game trailers like the one for the James Bond game Quantum of Solace. This is also the place where you will find premium content for games. I am also able to check my balance of Microsoft Points and recently played LIVE games. You can see I’ve played Shadowrun and Halo 2 – although it’s been a while. I could choose to view content in the Marketplace by Game title which is nice. That means I could choose a specific game and see all the content for that game in the Marketplace.

I wanted to grab some content so I decided to download the “Reveal” trailer for Quantum of Solace. I was thinking about picking this game up.

download

When I clicked on the Quantum of Solace “Reveal” trailer – I was taken to the download page for the trailer which allowed me to either watch the trailer directly within the client or download it in high resolution as a .wmv file. I downloaded the high resolution video which played nicely in Windows Media Player, Zune, and Windows Media Center.

NOTE: The Games for Windows – LIVE client puts all game videos under your Videos folder within your user profile in Windows Vista. The Zune software will automatically see these videos - where you can then choose to sync with your Zune device.

The video I downloaded shows up under My Media. All premium game content and videos show up here.

mymedia

You can manage all downloaded content under My Media. So if I were wanting to delete some downloaded content I could do so here.

settings

And in Settings, I was able to customize where the Games for Windows – LIVE client puts downloaded Game Demos and Game Videos. If I wanted – I could also clear all stored profiles as well.

In testing the Games for Windows – LIVE client, I used my 64-bit PC and the client functioned just fine. So you 64-bit users out there will have no problem installing and using this.

Expect to see more news happening around the release of the Games for Windows – LIVE client in the future as well as more content being delivered to the Marketplace for games under Games for Windows – LIVE.

Trojan.Zlob.G

Description of Trojan.Zlob.G and consequences of its residing on your PC

Perfect Defender 2009, just like majority of fake virus removal tools, frightens users into buying the license for its full version using adware installed through various trickeries. The adware responsible for Perfect Defender 2009 pop-up and for scaring alerts generation are often different programs. The most famous adware is a stupid and awful program generating alert that reads as follows:

“Security center alert
Do you want to block this suspicious software?
Name: Trojan.Zlob.G
Risk Level: High
Description: Trojan.Zlob.G is a trojan program that records keystrokes and takes screen shots of the computer, stealing personal and financial information.”

The above text may vary. The problem is not in this alert as is but in additional measures taken by the adware. These measures are aimed to create obvious system disordering and thus make users buy Perfect Defender 2009. Unfortunately for both users and rascals, the impact is often too strong that user can at least download any program from Internet. That means, rascals cannot get their dirty benefits and users cannot stop the destructions, and one may have difficulties with downloading Trojan.Zlob.G removal tool. Another thing you should be aware if experienced Trojan.Zlob.G alert is that you need to remove Trojan.Zlob.G alert and not the Trojan.Zlob.G itself.  Such trojan is most likely to vanish completely as for now, and there is only name chosen by hackers to be utilized at their tricky schemes. There is thus a conclusion to be made that you need to have the program to remove Trojan.Zlob.G alert rather than Trojan.Zlob.G removal tool. Click here to install copy of the program able to remove both Trojan.Zlob.G and Trojan.Zlob.G alert.

Trojan.Zlob.G Technical Details

  • Full name: Trojan.Zlob.G
  • Version: 2009
  • Type: Rogue anti-spyware, Trojan horse, Fake Alert
  • Origin: Russian Federation

Signs of being infected with Trojan.Zlob.G:

Perfect Defender 2009 may start the trickery with alert saying like this:

“Insecure Internet activity. Threat of virus attack
Due to insecure Internet browsing your PC can easily get infected with viruses, worms and trojans without your knowledge, and that can lead to system slowdown, freezes and crashes.
Also insecure Internet activity can result in revealing your personal information.
To get full advanced real-time protection for PC and Internet activity, register your antivirus software.
We recommend you to protect your PC now and continue safe Internet browsing.
Click here to get full advanced real-time protection and continue browsing.
Continue to this website unprotected (not recommended). “

This is the alert appearing when user opening Internet browser. Clicking this alert, one redirects the browser to http/defender-review.com or another website entitled “Safe Soft Reviews”. Do not visit such websites as they are the source of adware hardly disordering infected computers. The workflow of this trickery may start in another way but unless adware of Trojan.Zlob.G removal is timely performed, it ends always with system crush.
After visiting these website users usually get infected with adware that systematically oppresses Windows and generate alert entitled “Security Center Alert” of the content provided in the first section above.
Click here  to start scanning computer free of charge in order to detect and remove Trojan.Zlob.G alert.

Automatic Removal of Trojan.Zlob.G from your PC:

There are two main problems in removing Trojan.Zlob.G alert. Of these two, the former is that there are various programs promising to remove Trojan.Zlob.G and users mistakenly identify Trojan.Zlob.G with the alerts referring to this name thus mistakenly supposing to remove  Trojan.Zlob.G alert removing the same-name trojan. The latter is that Trojan.Zlob.G alert is likely to be a part of bigger installation than adware generating a single alert and even bigger than rogues having relation to Perfect Defender 2009. It is our advice to get rid of Trojan.Zlob.G alert after free scan with the tool for Trojan.Zlob.G alert removal below, automatically or manually.  If other than Trojan.Zlob.G adware rogues found, it is all the more recommended to perform Trojan.Zlob.G adware automatic removal, or at least to find at this and other websites manual removal guidelines for every discovered threat.

Download Trojan.Zlob.G Removal Tool

Manual Removal of Trojan.Zlob.G:

It is very likely that you have not started to remove Trojan.Zlob.G adware automatically because you… could not do that, since the download was interrupted or blocked by the adware. In such case, manual removal may be also interrupted so our advice is to start the removal of Trojan.Zlob.G adware from other computer. Open this page from any free of infection computer, install the tool and let it run.
If your final decision is to remove Trojan.Zlob.G adware manually, follow the guide below attentively and as fast as possible, but not faster than at speed allowing to avoid mistyping.

Remove Trojan.Zlob.G files and dll’s

dbbase.div

Accessing Your Ubuntu Linux System with GDM

If you have installed the GRUB boot loader, when you turn on or reset your computer, the boot loader first decides what operating system to load and run. The boot loader then loads the default operating system, which will be Ubuntu. Ubuntu will use a graphical interface by default, presenting you with a login window in which you enter your username and password.

If other operating systems, such as Windows, are already installed on your computer, you can press the spacebar at startup to display a boot loader menu showing those systems as boot options. If a Windows system is listed, you can choose to start that instead of Ubuntu.

The GNOME Display Manager: GDM
In Ubuntu, the GNOME Display Manager (GDM) manages the login interface along with authenticating the username and password, and then Ubuntu starts up a selected desktop.

On startup, the GDM displays a login window with a Username text box. Various GDM themes are available, which you can select using the GDM configuration tool. The default theme currently used is the Ubuntu Human theme. An Options pop-up menu at the lower-left corner of the screen shows entries for Restart, Shut Down, Suspend, and Hibernate your system. In addition, Select Language and Select Session entries display dialogs for selecting the language or user interface you want to use, such as GNOME or KDE.

Enter your username and press enter. Then enter your password and press enter. By default, the GNOME desktop starts up.

When you log out from the desktop, you return to the GDM login screen. To shut down your Linux system, choose Options | Shut Down. To restart, choose Options | Restart. You can also shut down the system from GNOME: Choose System | Quit, or click the Quit button on the top panel at the right. GNOME will display a dialog box with two rows of buttons: Suspend, Hibernate, Restart, or Shut Down options appear in the bottom row. Click Restart to shut down and restart your system.

Choose Options | Select Sessions to select the desktop or window manager you want to start up. In the dialog box that shows all installed user interfaces, you can choose KDE to start up the K Desktop, for example, instead of GNOME. The KDE option will not be shown unless you have already installed KDE.

Failsafe entries for both GNOME and the terminal provide a stripped down interface you can use for troubleshooting. For example, the Run Xclient script lets you run just your X Window System configuration script. This script will normally start up GNOME or KDE, but it could be specially configured for other desktops or window managers. Normally, the last session entry would be selected, which starts up the interface you used previously. Once you have selected your interface, click the Change Session button (or you can opt
out of any change by clicking the Cancel button) to return to the login screen.

Selecting Language from the Options menu opens a dialog with a drop-down menu that lists a variety of languages supported by Linux. Choose one and click the Change Language button to change the language used by your interface.

If you encounter problems in using the GUI, you can force an exit by pressing CTRL-ALTBACKSPACE to return to the login screen. In addition, from the GDM, you can switch to the command line interface by pressing CTRL-ALT-F1, and then switch back to the GUI by pressing CTRL-ALT-F7. You can also force your system to reboot at the login prompt by holding down the CTRL and ALT keys and then pressing the DEL key (CTRL-ALT-DEL). Your system will go through the standard shutdown procedure and then your computer will reboot.

You can configure your GDM login window with different features such as background images and user icons. The GDM even has its own selection of themes from which to choose. Choose System | Administration | Login Window to configure your login window.

The User Switcher
The user switcher at the upper-right of the top panel of the GNOME desktop lets you switch to another user without having to log out or end your current user session. The user switcher is installed automatically as part of your basic GNOME desktop configuration. Click the username to see a list of all other users, as shown next. Check boxes appear next to the names to indicate which users are logged in and running. To switch to a different user, simply select the user from this list. If the user is not already logged in, the login screen (GDM) will appear, where you can enter the user’s password.
If the user is already logged in, the login screen for the lock screen will appear (you can disable the lock screen). Enter the user’s password here. The user’s original session will continue, and any open windows and applications running when the user switched off will still be open and running. You can easily switch back and forth between logged in users, with each user retaining his session where he left off. When you switch to a new user, the former user’s running programs will continue in the background. Right-clicking the switcher will list several user management options, such as configuring the login screen, managing users, or changing the user’s password and personal information. The Preferences item lets you configure how the user switcher is displayed on your screen. For example, instead of the username, you could use the term Users or a user icon. You can also choose whether to use a lock screen when the user is switched. Disabling the lock screen option will let you switch seamlessly between logged in users.

Windows 7 FAQ and Rumours

Windows 7 FAQ and Rumors
This page is constantly updated with new information. Last updated December 8, 2008

What is Windows 7?
Windows 7 is the codename of the upcoming operating system in development by Microsoft. It’s called 7 for now probably because it’s the 7th version of Windows (Vista was Windows 6.)

Windows 7 Build 69xx Leaked?
Although these were the builds shown at PDC and WinHEC, they have not been leaked.

When will Windows 7 Beta 1 come out?
We’re looking at a January 13 release.

How can I get Windows 7 Beta 1?
Attending MSDN Developer’s Conference will guarantee you a copy.

(although TPB will probably have it released before they have been mailed out to the attendees.)
Is Windows 7 really Vista’s twin?
It’s hard to say now because Windows 7 is not even considered a beta yet. Any claims made now are probably inaccurate. Your best bet would be to wait until Beta 1 is released to find out.

So Windows 7 Build 6801leaked then?
It’s already been leaked on dozens of torrent sites.

Should I use Windows 7 as my main OS if I get my hands on it?*
It is still in pre-beta stage so you are sure to face some hiccups on it. I’ve already had trouble with a few games and applications. It has also randomly shut down on me without asking me if I want to restart after updates, which is very annoying. Also, a public beta is coming out in December so you may want to wait before “fully” switching, which I don’t recommend anyway.

Is Windows 7 the same as Windows Blackcomb or Vienna?
Yes. Vienna and Blackcomb were old codenames.

When will Windows 7 be released?
Microsoft plans to release Windows 7 three years after Vista’s release date. Windows 7 should be released sometime between late 2009 - early 2010. Microsoft also recently confirmed their focus is for a Q4 2009 release.

Will Windows 7 be available in 64-bit only?
No. It will be available as a 32-bit and 64-bit version.

Will Windows 7 utilize a new kernel?
Nope. Previous rumors about Microsoft creating a new kernel that is one-sixth of the size of Windows Vista’s kernel were not true.

Is Windows 7 a major or minor release?
Windows 7 will be a major release. (For example: Windows XP SP2 was a minor release)

Will Windows 7 use the same driver device model as Vista?
Yes it will, meaning that existing drivers will work with Windows 7. No need for headaches over updates. Kudos to Microsoft for this one.

Why does Windows 7 look awfully like Windows Vista?
No one is sure yet, but Microsoft is known to get the technical aspects and features done correctly first, before reworking the GUI.

What’s the whole deal with the Ribbon?
The Ribbon is what Microsoft believes as the future of navigation for programs. If you take a look at the Notepad Look-alike screenshots here that’s what Microsoft wants to implement for programs to come. There’s not a whole lot of detail about this yet.

Virtual Hard Disks?
There were rumors of Microsoft posting a job listing for someone that can work on their virtualization features. However, an updated WinHEC 2008 agenda shows that the seminar on VHD will only be for Windows Server 2008.

What about the sidebar and its gadgets??
Windows 7 will not have the sidebar like in Vista. However, gadgets are to play an integral part of the overall GUI, and will be “integrated” into the whole Windows system.

How do I get Windows 7 Beta?
The Public beta is due to come out sometime in mid-December. To get ready for it, make sure you have a Windows Live account and sign in Microsoft Connect and fill out your details. You can try looking for Windows 7 in the list but the last time I checked it wasn’t there (please let me know if you do see it there.) I’ll update you on when the public beta starts getting distributed.

Just how fast does Windows 7 boot up?
Just to give you an idea, let me give you my specs:
CPU: Intel Core2Duo e6750 - 2.66GhZ
Motherboard: Gigabyte P35 DS3R
RAM: 2GB Crucial at 733MhZ
HD: 640GB Samsung 16MB Cache

On Vista I boot up in about 35 seconds, and Windows 7 ranges from 20-25. It actually gets faster the more I use my computer.
On Asus EEE netbook tests, it takes 58 seconds to boot up. Lifehacker claims it is 20% faster than Vista in terms of boot time.

New Windows 7 Bitlocker additions:
Bitlocker will now support portable USB Flash drives as well

Windows 7 Features:
Screen Docking in Windows 7:
Screen docking is the ability for Windows to change shape or form through the way you move them. If you move a window up to the top edge of your screen, it will maximize automatically. Dragging it away will unmaximize it. Dragging it off to the left and right edges will automatically resize them to take up 50% of the screen.

The new taskbar “superbar” in Windows 7:
The new and improved taskbar looks a bit like the dock in Mac OS X. Microsoft wants you to recognize applications only by their icons, although you can still have it show text. It’s size has increased by 1.5 times, and you can now shift application boxes around. The new graphics engine also allows the application background box to change colour according to the hues in the application’s icon. There’s an entire article on how to unlock this hidden taskbar in Windows 7, and a preview of its features here.

Native HD codec support for Windows 7:
Windows 7 is to natively support DivX, Xvid, MKV, and H.264, as well as transcoding. This means you can watch any videos in these codecs right out of the box. Windows Media Center can also convert on-the-fly to a format your extender uses, meaning you can now stream these videos to your Xbox 360, or any other external device.

Device Stage:
Device stage is a new feature that allows device vendors to have a customizable interface that allows you to utilize your device from a control panel. Basically, when you plug in your device, a window will pop up listing its specs (battery life, firmware version, hard disk space, etc) and then give you many options as to what you can do with the device. This may eliminate the need to download or install 3rd party applications to use specific devices in the future.

Windows 7 Libraries:
Libraries are folders that allow you to access data of a specific category regardless of where they are located on your computer. For example, you can create a library for rock music and have access to all your rock music in that folder, even if you have rock music on 3 different partitions.

Customizable UAC in Windows 7:
You can’t completely customize UAC but there are now four different UAC behaviors you can select. You can choose for UAC to go into paranoia mode, or to not alert you at all.

Windows Sensors in Windows 7:
Windows 7 will have support for software and hardware sensors. This is very neat and there’s an entire article about it here. If you just want to know the basics, let’s just say that the sensors will have some of the following abilities: GPS, the ability to change monitor brightness and contrast depending on the amount of sunlight around you, the ability to change the GUI of an application depending on the time of day.

Desktop Slideshows in Windows 7:
Desktop slideshows allow your desktop wallpaper to automatically change in specified time intervals. You can also draw images from an RSS feed such as NASA image of the day, so your wallpaper change when that image changes, without actually having to store the files on your hard-drive. I have written an article on it here.

Windows Peeking:
Windows peeking allows you to look at a window without actually going to it. The purpose of this is to be able to view your gadgets lying on your desktop, without actually having to access your desktop. You can probably imagine how easy it is to get away with surfing on the net while at work.

Driver protection in Windows 7:
Whenever drivers are started, they are checked against a “Protection List” so bad drivers can be prevented from starting to avoid stability problems. The list is regularly updated by Microsoft.

IME Learning:
IME Learning or (Input Method Editor) Learning is a feature that will memorize the combination of words or characters you use with East Asian languages. This is different from what was seen in Vista or XP because these memorizations are permanently stored on your computer, whereas in past operating systems, memory was lost after shut down.
