Domino A.L.C. Can Solve PC Heating Problems

Heat is something that can slow our computers down and while many people are turning to bigger and additional fans to negate this problem, there is a better alternative which you can turn to. The new cooling liquid solution comes by the name of Domino A.L.C., a liquid cooling solution introduced in the market by CoolIT Systems.

The Domino is a compact, factory-sealed system that can be easily installed in minutes. You just open up the case and install a special retention system that positions itself directly over the CPU. It mounts using its four spring-loaded screw posts, one located on each corner. According to CoolIT, it can be installed into even the most crowded chassis.

Overheating chips has been an issue since the first Pentium IV processors. Most technicians have installed a third party auxiliary fan to help control ventilation but this has had its own share of issues, particularly when it comes to power distribution from the normally usual power supply.

You can just imagine the accumulating heat inside a PC. It is not only the processor that is generating that high level of temperature. Remember, you have other peripherals operating as well and put them altogether, you can imagine how the temperature in your PC would be.

In a nutshell, your computer needs all the help it can get as far as normalizing the internal temperature of your CPU. Coolit Systems has just come up with a dandy idea. Check it out.

Microsoft will bring Windows 7 Beta on January 13th

A blog posting on Microsoft's Technet by Keith Combs hinted on Tuesday that a beta version for the company’s new operating system Windows 7 would be made available as early as January, 2009.

The update is confirmed on the basis of a blog posting. Combs also recommended those who wanted to get hold of the Windows beta 7 to sign up for participation in the upcoming MSDN developer conferences.

The blog posting suggested that all who were to attend the aforementioned conferences would receive a DVD with Windows 7 beta 1 on it, adding though that the attendees for the December events would not benefit from the offer.

Keith Combs stated that the DVDs containing the beta version of Windows 7 would not be ready until January 13, the earlies

The company also said, "Windows 7 will offer more options than ever to customize and personalize Windows-based PCs with styles that match the user's personality," though it provided little detail.

Perhaps most significantly, Microsoft said applications that are compatible with Windows Vista will work with Windows 7 because the two operating systems share the same basic architecture. "Windows 7 extends developers' investments in Windows Vista," the company said in a statement.

Upon its debut in January of last year, Vista was roundly criticized for its lack of compatibility with applications built for the older Windows XP operating system. The problem was partly to blame for the fact that few businesses have upgraded from XP to Vista, even though Vista has now been on the market for almost two years.

Consumers and enterprises alike also complained about Vista's heavy hardware and memory requirements, and intrusive security measures that added extra steps to even routine computing tasks. Microsoft no longer mentions Vista by name in its latest Windows ads and appears to be accelerating efforts to bring Windows 7 into production.

"With our new approach to planning and development we now have a great foundation for our partners to start learning and innovating on this exciting new version of Windows," said Steven Sinofsky, senior VP for Microsoft's Windows Engineering Group, in a statement.

Setting Your Bash Shell Prompt

Your prompt consists of a set of characters that appear each time the shell is ready to accept a command. The PS1 environment variable sets what the prompt contains and is what you interact with most of the time. If your shell requires additional input, it uses the values of PS2, PS3, and PS4. When your Linux system is installed, often a prompt is set to contain more than just a dollar sign or pound sign. For example, in Fedora or Red Hat Enterprise Linux, your prompt is set to include the following information: your username, your hostname, and the base name of your current working directory. That information is surrounded by brackets and followed by a dollar sign (for regular users) or a pound sign (for the root user). Here is an example of that prompt:

[chris@myhost bin]$

If you change directories, the bin name would change to the name of the new directory. Likewise, if you were to log in as a different user or to a different host, that information would change.

You can use several special characters (indicated by adding a backslash to a variety of letters) to include different information in your prompt. These can include your terminal number, the date, and the time, as well as other pieces of information.

Characters to Add Information to the bash Prompt
\! Shows the current command history number. This includes all previous commands stored for your username.

\# Shows the command number of the current command. This includes only the commands for the active shell.

\$ Shows the user prompt ($) or root prompt (#), depending on which user you are.

\W Shows only the current working directory base name. For example, if the current working directory was /var/spool/mail, this value simply appears as mail.

\[ Precedes a sequence of nonprinting characters. This can be used to add a terminal control sequence into the prompt for such things as changing colors, adding blink effects, or making characters bold. (Your terminal determines the exact sequences available.)

\] Follows a sequence of nonprinting characters.

\\ Shows a backslash.

\d Displays the day name, month, and day number of the current date. For example: Sat Jan 23.

\h Shows the hostname of the computer running the shell.

\n Causes a newline to occur.

\nnn Shows the character that relates to the octal number replacing nnn.

\s Displays the current shell name. For the bash shell, the value would be bash.

\t Prints the current time in hours, minutes, and seconds (for example, 10:14:39).

\u Prints your current username.

\w Displays the full path to the current working directory.

To make a change to your prompt permanent, add the value of PS1 to your .bashrc file in your home directory (assuming that you are using the bash shell). There may already be a PS1 value in that file that you can modify. Refer to the Bash Prompt HOWTO (www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Bash-Prompt-HOWTO) for information on changing colors, commands, and other features of your bash shell prompt.
