Windows (Server 2008) Event ID 4 — Printer Connections Status (Warning)…

I just checked the event log of my Citrix Infrastructure server, which is running Windows Server 2008, and I discovered this error…twice every second:

Log Name:
System
Source: Microsoft-Windows-SpoolerWin32SPL
Date: 2/16/2009 1:49:05 PM
Event ID: 4
Task Category: None
Level: Warning
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: Computername.Domain
Description: The print spooler failed to reopen an existing printer connection because it could not read the configuration information from the registry key S-1-5-18\Printers\Connections. The print spooler could not open the registry key. This can occur if the registry key is corrupt or missing, or if the registry recently became unavailable.

Since S-1-5-18 is the SID for LocalSystem I found it odd that it would be looking for this key – but checked the registry and found that HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Printers\ was there, but \Connections was not.

I added this empty key and the error went away (so far).

I’m not sure why this key isn’t present by default, but wanted to share this since it may save someone some troubleshooting time one day.

Powercfg and Power Efficiency Diagnostics Reports

One of the new command tools introduced in Windows Vista was powercfg. Essentially it’s a command line tool that enables users to control power settings. There are a lot of very granular setting that can be configured. To get an idea of what you can do with it just run the following command from the command line:

powercfg –Help | more

You’ll need to pipe that help output to a “more” because the standard command prompt settings won’t buffer the entire help output!

A really cool new feature for Windows 7 is the Power Efficiency Diagnostic Reports. This will allow power users and administrators understand and optimize their systems for maximum power efficiency and by virtue maximum battery life for laptops. In large environments the cumulative effect of optimizing power usage over thousands of computers can result in tangible power and money savings!

To generate the power Power Efficiency Diagnostics Report open an administrative  command prompt and run:

powercfg -energy

image

The system will observe the behaviour of your devices and settings for 60 seconds. Once complete the following output will be generated:

image

The output file is dropped into the current working directory. Open the report in IE to get a detailed list of the information. Also keep in mind that the PowerProfile you’re using will have an impact on the report.

image

Notice that the errors in the above screenshot are all related to the fact that I have set High Performance enable while on battery. Some may not agree that it is an “error” but the thing to keep in mind is that this is in the context of creating maximum power efficiency. When I change my power profile to one that uses speed step and lowers the performance on my laptop this error will resolve and go if I run the report again.

image

Some other errors that can be generated relate to drivers or peripherals that won’t enter a low power mode. If you ever dealt with a laptop that won’t sleep a bad driver that doesn’t support advanced power management can often be the problem. This report can help isolate these issues.

image

Near the bottom of the report is information about CPU utilization, processes, and this little gem (screen shot above) This report can help troubleshoot battery usage and charge capacity. This gives admin’s a great way to decide when a battery should be replaced. If the last full charge is consistently dropping from the design capacity it may be time to replace the battery.

With this report Admins can tweak power profiles to realize the maximum benefits of new power efficient computer platforms. Happy efficient computing!

Request an Ubuntu CD

If you choose not to download or for some reason cannot download Ubuntu, you can request that they send you a copy of the CD. Select Get Ubuntu from the link underneath the picture of the four people lying side by side. Select the Request Free CDs tab shown here: and another page appears that informs you that shipping free CDs will not cost anything, not even shipping and handling fees, however, delivery time may take up to ten weeks. They are not lying about this; it can take quite a while, so they do offer the option once again to download Ubuntu.

If you select I Want To Request CDs Of Ubuntu, a page appears that asks you to log into Launchpad, a collaboration tool used by Canonical and Ubuntu. If you have requested free CDs from Ubuntu in the past, you can log in and submit another request. If this is your first time obtaining Ubuntu CDs, then you will need to select the Create A New Account link.

Once you reach the Launchpad web site, you are asked to submit your e-mail under the Not Registered Yet? heading. Enter a valid e-mail address and click the Register button so that Canonical can send you the rest of the registration steps. Almost immediately after registering, you can check the e-mail account you provided for a link to finalize your registration.

After clicking on this link, you are brought to a page where you select your display name and password. After this is completed, the Request CDs From ShipIt page appears, where you can now log in using the e-mail address and password chosen at registration. All you have to do now is fill out your shipping information and click the Request CDs button. You are given the option of requesting one CD or three CDs. You should choose three and give a few of your friends copies of Ubuntu so they can try it out as well.
