Windows Live Messenger 2009 update now being pushed out

Windows Live Messenger 2009 just alerted me about a new version that is available. I hope this update corrects some reliability issues I am experiencing on Windows 7. I notice it sporadically logging me out for some unknown reason. The build number for this update is (14.0.8064.0206). The update seems to be mandatory before you can sign back into Messenger.

How to remove Privacy Components manually:
It's possible to remove Privacy Components manually, but you have to be very experienced in dealing with registry entries, program files and .dll files.

The files to be deleted:

agent.exe
pc.exe
softjopa[1].exe
sp.dll
swapdm.dll

Remove registry entries:

Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{D032570A-5F63-4812-A094-87D007C23012}
Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Privacy components
Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\agent.exe
Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu2\Programs\
Privacy components

Please be careful because manual removal of Privacy Components may seriously damage operational system and sensitive data. Also there is a big possibility of incomplete removal, because some files could be hidden and program could re-install itself after you delete files and registry entries. So we strongly recommend you to use automatical removal tool.

Checking out Outlook Live – ZDNET iGeneration

Zack Whittaker over at ZDNET takes a look at the next generation of Microsoft Exchange web mail service Outlook Live (formerly Outlook Web Access). Currently in testing, the service is available to students at college campuses around the world, faculties can sign up through the Live@Edu Program. What's great about Outlook Live is, you get the full richness of Outlook Live across different web browsers, 10 GBs of storage, built in collaboration (Instant Messaging, Threaded view for emails) and the option to keep your account after graduating. The Microsoft Exchange Team is focused on making the Exchange ‘14’ release more service oriented while still providing the traditional on premise capabilities and experience. The ability to manage millions of inboxes is also a major focus of this release.

Recently I setup an Exchange Server 2007 installation for testing purposes and was really impressed with the rich functionality of the improved Outlook Web Access. Its basically Office Outlook in the browser. I hope to have a tutorial posted soon, so stay tuned for that. Its great to see how Microsoft is continuing to innovate and make collaboration more open with the next generation of Exchange and it looks really cool too.

Upgrading Video Cards for Competency

If you are a gamer, you will notice that through the years, each video card advances by the day. The reason behind this is not really for bragging rights but more of satisfying the demand for gaming requirements set forth by game developers for the resolution requirements to fully enjoy a worthy entertaining game.

Many of the desktop computers purchased in the past two years can still play games fairly well with even the chance of running at higher resolution provided they get a video card upgrade.

Graphics or video cards have made some outstanding performance gains the the past year that allow them to play games at higher resolutions and detail than ever before. With monitor prices dropping for larger 24-inch displays with their 1920×1200 resolutions, gamers will probably find older PCs having a harder time keeping up frame rates or even playing at these resolutions.

Thankfully, it is very easy to upgrade a computer’s graphics cards. If you are looking to give your system a boost in the 3D graphics arena, check out my selections for the best performance graphics cards if you are looking for higher resolutions or my best budget 3D graphics cards if you are looking to do some upgrades but spend a bit less.

Updating Ubuntu with Update Manager

New versions of Ubuntu are released every few months. In the meantime, new updates are continually being prepared for particular software packages. These are posted as updates you can download from software repositories and install on your system. These include new versions of applications, servers, and even the kernel. Such updates may range from single software packages to whole components.

Updating your Ubuntu system and packages has become a very simple procedure with Update Manager, a graphical update interface for APT. You can update your system by accessing software repositories supporting APT update methods.

The Update Manager applet on your GNOME desktop panel will automatically check for updates whenever you log in. If updates are detected, the Update Manager icon on the panel will flash and display a message telling you the number of updates that are available. Click the Update Manager icon to start Update Manager, or choose System | Administration | Update Manager and click the Check button to check current repository package listings for updates.

All required updates are selected automatically when Update Manager starts up. The check boxes for each entry let you deselect any particular packages you do not want to update. Packages are organized according to importance, beginning with important security updates and followed by recommended updates. You should always install the security updates.

Click the Install Updates button to start updating. The packages will be downloaded from their appropriate repository. Once downloaded, the packages are updated. All the APT-compatible repositories that are configured on your system will be checked. To see a detailed description of an update, select the update and then click the Description Of Update arrow at the bottom of the screen. Two tabs are displayed: Changes and Description. Changes lists detailed update information, and Description provides information about the software.

Click the Install Updates button to begin downloading and installing updates. A dialog appears showing the download progress. You can choose to show the progress for individual files. Click that option to open a window that lists each file and its progress. Once downloaded, the updates are installed. Click Details button to see install messages for particular software packages.
