Introducing the Genuine Windows Blog

Today, another blog joins The Windows Blog family. Previously my Genuine Windows/WGA blog, the new Genuine Windows Blog will feature posts not only from me, but from other genuine Windows team members, genuine Microsoft software partner teams, and other guest bloggers who can shed light on not just the challenges of fighting piracy, but the work that Microsoft is doing to help protect its customers from the risks of counterfeit software.

In the meantime, we'd like to add a few links to past blog posts that you might find helpful:

Thanks and I look forward to the discussions that will happen here at our new home!

Launch Parties to Help Tell the Windows 7 Story

Last night, many employees here at Microsoft (including me) received an email from Tami Reller, Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Vice President for the Windows Business Group. Her email invited Microsoft employees to host a Launch Party for Windows 7 – and we’re extending this invitation out to you! These Launch Parties will be a way for everyone to get involved in the excitement of the launch of Windows 7 on October 22nd. You helped make Windows 7, now you can help launch it!

These gatherings can are a way for people who are excited about Windows 7 to bring together their friends, families and acquaintances to see the experience the product. They can happen anywhere - at home, in a cafe, at schools, or at other community gathering spots and can be as flexible and creative as you and your circle of people. I’m thinking about hosting a Launch Party myself and thinking about where and who to invite to my party when I host it.

If you live in one of the countries where Launch Parties will be available for you to host, you can apply here to be a Launch Party host. In order to host a Launch Party, your application must go through a review process first. If your application passes the review process, you will be sent an email letting you know you have been accepted. A MyParty page is created for you by House Party where you (as the host) can add who you want to invite to your party and invite them. You will also receive a kit to help you with your party, including Windows 7 Host Help Videos and Host Notes (demos) and other materials to make your Launch Party fun.

Todd Bishop wrote a good blog post talking about Launch Parties which is worth reading if you’re interested in hosting one!

Note: If you don’t live in a country where Launch Parties are available to host – don’t worry! You can still hold a Windows 7 gathering of your own. We will be providing Windows 7 tips, content, demos, and training online starting September 15th for you to host your own gathering or “meet-up”.

Remove Vista Antivirus 2010 - VistaAntivirus 2010 Removal Information

Vista Antivirus 2010, also known as Vista Antivirus2010, is a direct copy of the notorious rogue antispyware application called Antivirus 2009. Yes, this nasty fake antispyware is back with a new mask. Don’t let it fool you. Antivirus 2010 is created by those ruthless people who try to ruin the integrity of our computing experience. Generally, Antivirus 2010 usually comes up after you installed a video codec that come with Trojan, malware and virus. Unfortunately, it is not the only one way it can invade your system. Once installed, Vista Antivirus will perform fake system scan and report false or exaggerated system security threats on your PC. After that it will give you a link, from where you can purchase the full license of the application, and only then you would be able to get rid of all alerts. The fun thing is that Vista Antivirus 2009 is going to load you with numerous alerts even after you have downloaded and installed the latest upgrades or original version for big amount of money. The detection of Vista Antivirus 2010 may be a difficult process and its removal may prove to be even more problematic, but don’t waste the time and uninstall Vista Antivirus as soon as possible. If you didn’t do that, you might lose your money, PC, privet and important information.

Type: Rogue Anti-Spyware
Malware Author: Unknown
Threat Level: Critical

Vista Antivirus 2010 Automatical Removal Tool

How to remove Vista Antivirus 2010 manually:
It's possible to remove Vista Antivirus 2010 manually, but you have to be very experienced in dealing with registry entries, program files and .dll files.

The files to be deleted:

%System Root%\Samples
%User Profile%\Local Settings\Temp
%Program Files%\Vista Antivirus 2010
%Program Files%\LabelCommand
%Documents and Settings%\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Vista Antivirus 2010
%Documents and Settings%\All Users\Application Data\Vista Antivirus 2010

Remove registry entries:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run “Vista Antivirus 2010”
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Vista Antivirus 2010
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Vista Antivirus 2010
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Vista Antivirus 2010

Please be careful because manual removal of Vista Antivirus 2010 may seriously damage operational system and sensitive data. Also there is a big possibility of incomplete removal, because some files could be hidden and program could re-install itself after you delete files and registry entries. So we strongly recommend you to use automatical removal tool.

Windows Mobile 6.5 is half a step in the right direction

Windows Mobile 6.5

(Left) Windows Mobile 6.5        (Right) Also Windows Mobile 6.5

Add this to the ever-growing list of Microsoft design decisions that doesn’t make sense.

Thanks to a thriving community of custom ROM developers at xda-developers.com, I’m been fortunate enough to be able to upgrade my year-old Samsung i780 Windows phone to the Windows Mobile 6.5 OS.

From the past couple of days, my overall experiences with Windows Mobile 6.5 is positive. But, I do find myself puzzled why Microsoft declared what appears to be a half-finished product “done”. It’s as if a builder was half way through renovating a kitchen and walked off. To illustrate this, take a look at the disconcerting side-by-side picture above.

Both pictures are from Windows Mobile 6.5 and both are native in-call status screens. The difference is that if you make a call or receive a call whilst your screen is unlocked, you get the interface on the left. However, if your screen is locked, you get the far more modern, intuitive and touch-friendly experience interface on the right.

Whilst I understand why there is a difference from a technical low-level code perspective, it baffles me why the better experience is “hidden” in such a way that most people would probably not be aware of it or be able to use it very often since WM6.5 doesn’t automatically lock the screen by default anyway. It’s not just inconsistent, it doesn’t even make sense.

Having said that however it’s obvious Microsoft is heading into the right direction but the question is whether they can get there before the iPhone or Android lapses them.

(I would also like to point out the new WM6.5 multi-function lock screen is very innovative is much more functional than the iPhone or Android’s single-purpose lock screens.).
