Emacs for E-Mail

Emacs for E-Mail
Emacs has been called the Swiss Army knife of GNU/Linux because of all the functions it can perform. Sending and receiving e-mail is another application of Emacs that you may want to use. It is important to note that not all e-mail services support the use of Gnus or Emacs as a mail client. Double-check with your e-mail service to see if they support this before you configure the .gnus file.

If your e-mail service provides support for Emacs and Gnus, let’s open the .gnus file and modify it to be able to send and receive e-mails. To do this, you will need the SMTP and POP server information that was used for setting up your Evolution account. If you no longer have this information, your e-mail provider’s site will have this information for you.

Once you have opened your .gnus file, move the point to the first available line in the file by using the arrow keys or the C-N key binding (hold down CTRL and press N repeatedly until the point is at the first empty line in the file). Once you have the point in the right place, enter the following code:

(setq smtpmail-smtp-server "smtp.your isp.com")
(setq gnus-secondary-select-methods '((nnml "smtp.your isp.com")))
(setq smtpmail-local-domain "your isp.com")

This will set up Gnus to send mail using the Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP). Where the example reads “your isp.com,” substitute the name of your Internet service provider. Remember, not all providers end in “.com”; some end in “.net.” For instance, if you are using Bell South, you would enter bellsouth.net.

To be able to receive e-mail, you need to define the Post Office Protocol (POP) server that your ISP uses. Once you have this information, you need to add the following line to the .gnus configuration file:

(setq mail-sources '((pop :server "your.pop3server.com" :user "username" )))

Gnus will now download all of your mail into a newsgroup that it creates for you. By opening this newsgroup, you can read through all of your downloaded e-mail. Since you set up the SMTP server settings, you can send e-mail as well by going to the toolbar and selecting Gnus | Send A Message. Once you have typed your message, click the Send This Message icon on the toolbar.

If you find Emacs to be a valuable tool when using your computer, practice with it as much as you can. Many more key bindings and many more tools are available to you in Emacs. The more you use this tool, the easier it gets. Learning the key bindings is like learning a second language, only you don’t have to roll your rrrr’s. Practice, practice, practice, and eventually you will find yourself using the key bindings to navigate through the buffers and frames without having to refer to a cheat sheet of any kind.

In this configuration, you will be asked to provide your password each time you start Gnus. It is possible to modify this line to automatically enter your password for you; however, this is not an advisable practice since anyone with access to your computer would be able to read all of your e-mails.

The Windows Marketplace for Mobile Client and your Setup code

The Windows Marketplace for Mobile client provides users a streamlined experience to purchase and install applications on their Windows Mobile 6.5 devices (coming soon for 6.1, and 6.0).

Markplace Client: Install in progress

As you will notice when installing applications, the user interface is different from the typical CAB file installation (see below) perhaps you are used to.

No Marketplace Client

It is very important that the Marketplace install experience be uniform and streamlined. To keep it this way, no custom UI (errors, prompts, informational messages, etc.) should be displayed during installation or uninstallation.

If you absolutely must display custom UI, there are some things you should know about the Marketplace client.

The Marketplace client achieves a streamlined experience by suppressing the normal user interface, displaying a client specific progress bar and providing feedback when the installation has completed. This can cause problems for applications that have custom prompts implemented in the setup dll. For example, you may want to prompt the user to start your application after installation has completed. This is easily done by adding the appropriate MessageBox prompt to the Install_Init export of your setup dll. However, there can be problems with this.

The foreground display of your MessageBox or other custom UI, depends on knowing the window handle of the calling process. When your application is installed with the Marketplace client, no window handle is passed to your setup DLL’s exported functions. This can cause your custom UI to not be displayed in the foreground. This causes confusion for the user since it looks like the installation is still running, but there is no UI feedback. The only recourse for the user is to use task manager to locate the prompt window and select it to bring it to the foreground. This is a very poor user experience.

You can resolve this by using the MB_TOPMOST | MB_SETFOREGROUND flags when calling MessageBox or WS_EX_TOPMOST when creating a window for custom UI.

Have you tried the Marketplace client yet? No? Don’t have a 6.5 ROM update or device yet? No problem. Download the Windows Mobile 6.5 standalone emulator images here. These come with a fully functional Marketplace client you can download and install apps with.

Hope this helps.

Ubuntu 9.10 Released:

Normally, I wouldn’t release this as a blog-post since there are probably about 10,000 other geeks online typing this exact same post into their blogs right now.

A “twitter”? Sure!, but a full blog-post? Nah

HOWEVER, I did want to post this because 9.10 is special, both the Ubuntu and Kubuntu “flavors”. I tested both throughout the release cycle, and the GNOME based Ubuntu won me over, in fact, I doubt, honestly I could ever use KDE again for any length of time.

I’ve been kinda quiet about Linux lately – I’ve been trying out some things w/ my workstation (Dell Precision 690), weighing some options on what I wanted to run on it after some upgrades and Ubuntu has won out – it was down to the wire – I last “reloaded” Ubuntu 2 days ago to get a head start on the “rush” to get the final version, and I’ll run an “apt-get upgrade” when I get home tonight and be done.

Anyway – back on topic…

Ubuntu 9.10 is hands down, bar-none the nicest, most polished GNOME desktop I’ve ever logged into. If you have ever thought of trying Linux, and just never got around too it, now is the time. The “Paper Cuts” project paid off big time, and the level of polish – all the way down to the new Icon set (love the systray icons) is unprecedented.

Here is the release announcement, the release notes and the Feature Tour for you to check out.

If you need help, remember to log into #ubuntu on Freenode – I’m jayson_r there and if I’m online, hopefully I can chat w/ you some time. If not, there are usually a few hundred helpful souls there ready to help you out!

Happy Computing!
