Deel I: Waarom mijn correcte soms „glitch van Vensters?“
De vensters is rijke en complexe OS die voor multi-tasking gebruikers wordt ontworpen de van wie taken toegang tot schaarse systeemhardware en middelen moeten delen. Jammer genoeg, ondanks veelvoudige decennia van ongelooflijke vooruitgang in de architectuur van PC en van cpu, zijn er niet alledaagse, complexe interactie tussen toepassingen, processen, en apparaten in zelfs de meest geavanceerde personal computers die een vermoedelijk „gemakkelijke“ taak - als het spelen van achtermuziek zonder occasionele glitches - moeilijker maken dan het eerst blik kan schijnen.
Een andere manier om over dit te denken: het schijnt oneven dat een moderne PC >$2000 kan soms probleem hebben dat foutloos achtermuziek speelt wanneer $20 CD spelers moeiteloos playbackmuziek zonder glitches kunnen.
Zo waarom velen glitch van $2000 PCs nu en dan terwijl het spelen van achtermuziek? Het snelle antwoord is dit: De vensters is geen enig-functieapparaat zoals een CD speler.
Een lichtjes langer antwoord gaat als dit: zelfs wordt een gemiddelde machine van Vensters vandaag algemeen gebruikt gelijktijdig als media speler, tekstverwerker, presentatieprojector, spreadsheet aantalmaalmachine, auteursgereedschap, fotoredacteur, media server, videorecorder, hulpmiddel van de muzieksamenstelling, communicatie apparaat, onderzoeksmotor, virusdetector, gegevens compressor en decompressor, en reservemanager. En deze zijn slechts enkelen van de mogelijke taken en de processen die tezelfdertijd op honderden miljoenen machines in werking worden gesteld van Vensters die vandaag in gebruik zijn. Elk van deze taken of processen, afzonderlijk, zou nauwelijks de middelen van de moderne hardware van PC belasten. Maar in onze multi-tasking wereld, komen de onvermijdelijke middelconflicten soms tussen het reusachtige en diverse ecosysteem van de hardware van Vensters voor dat deze taken toelaat. Zelfs op de duurste, gloednieuwe machine, occasionele kunnen glitches voorkomen als en wanneer het systeem probeert om zijn eindige middelen onder deze veelvoudige, diverse, onafhankelijke, macht-hongerige activiteiten te verdelen.
Wat is glitch?
Glitch is een waarneembare fout, hiaat of pop in het geluid dat door discontinuīteit in het geluidssignaal tijdens playback of opname wordt veroorzaakt die uit verwerking of timingsproblemen voortvloeit. Glitches tijdens muziekplayback kunnen als luide „pop“ klinken of als een korte plak van stilte nam willekeurig op waar uw muziek zou moeten geweest zijn. Sommige klanten hebben ook beschreven wat die in hun eigen woorden „glitching“ zoals:
- de audio houdt een klein beetje tegen
- verdeelt
- veranderlijk
- het klikken
- corruptie
- crackle/geknetter/crackly
- onderbreking
- kriebels
- jumpy
- het overslaan/skip/skips
For the purpose of this discussion, let’s lump all of these descriptions together under one general class of problems and call these “glitching.” While a glitch that happens during music playback can be annoying and unsettling, a glitch that occurs while you are recording or communicating with someone can result in frustrating and unacceptable data loss.
What causes my Windows sound and music to glitch?
Digital media processing is time-sensitive. Playback requires specific work to be performed by a given deadline — otherwise presentation or data loss can occur. A “glitch” occurs when a deadline for time-sensitive processing is missed or when time-sensitive data is lost.
For example, in Windows Vista, playing back music involves “work” that must be done at least every 10 milliseconds so that there can be a continuous stream of music out to your speakers. The “simple” task of playing back music consists of the following steps, all of which must be completed before a strict deadline:
- a small chunk of data from a music file needs to be read from a disc (CD or hard drive)
- this data needs to be “decompressed” or “decoded” (usually in system memory) so it can be streamed out to your speakers in a format that your sound hardware understands
- the decompressed sound data needs to be copied from system memory to your sound hardware memory
- the data in your sound hardware needs to be sent to your speakers at the appropriate time
- repeat steps 1-4 flawlessly every 10 milliseconds (ms)

Windows Vista : Latest Update KB940510 to Stop pirates
Microsoft has announced an update which will detect two cracks commonly used to activate pirated copies of the operating system. One of the cracks refered to as Grace Timer, extended Vista's activation grace period, upto 2099. The other called as OEM BIOS, modified system files and the PC's BIOS to mimic the product activation done by computer-makers at the factory. If the sniffer detects an activation hack, it will pop up a warning that includes a link to the removal tool. Although SP1 will block these two cracks, "it's important to note that this update does not disable the exploits it finds," says Alex Kochis "It simply alerts customers that exploits exist." However, MS will release a separate crack-removal tool at the same time that it rolls out the detection update.

Its actually does turn out to be a main update, and no hidden installation.I think even if you try to cancel/hide the update it does get installed automatically.I hope pirates do not find a way, but if they do, that would be no surprise!
What happens after downloading the update (KB940510)?
It will only detects OEM BIOS and Grace Timer exploits and remove them.
When the update will be installed, no functionality of the system will be affected. If it detects and exploits you will be provided a link that would describes how you can remove the exploits. Once the exploits are removed you will be asked to activate your Windows copy with a valid product key. If you don’t want to remove the exploit then Windows may disable the exploits and then ask you activate Windows using a valid product key (surely there would be a nag screen). This update has no uninstaller.

List of Vista SP1 problems
Vista SP1 is officially only available for enterprise customers, but the reports about problems caused by this service pack are piling up. This post contains a list of all SP1 issues I am aware of.
I have discussed some of them before, but I thought it might be a good idea to create a list of all known Vista SP1 issues to keep track of them. I will update this post whenever I encounter new ones.
Device driver problems
This issue was the reason why Microsoft postponed the general release of SP1 to mid-march. It seems not to be a big problem for tech savvy Vista users. This article (KB 948187) has more.
Programs that have problems with Vista SP1
I mentioned before that Vista SP1 doesn’t solve compatibility problems, but it causes new ones. This article (KB935796) lists all known programs that don’t work properly with Vista SP1. I suggest you check them out before you install this service pack. Please, let us know if you experienced troubles with other apps that are not in this list.
The endless reboot issue
This problem of Vista SP1 is causing a lot of stir. A pre-requisite update (KB937287) triggers endless reboots on some machines. Microsoft suspended the automatic distribution of this update. I installed this update before, but I didn’t experience this problem. I just checked Windows Update and it was available again. Before that, I was able to install Vista SP1 without this patch anyway. So it seems like this issue is not as bad as it seemed at first. KB949358 has details on how to solve this problem if you are affected.
The sleep mode problem
Milo reports that some systems with SP1 crash when attempting to wake up their PC from sleep mode. I have experienced the same problem on some Vista machine without SP1. A BIOS update might be of help in such cases. However, I don’t know if the problem described by Milo is a new one. He thinks that it might be related to the reboot issue. However, I think it must be something different because the reboot problem isn’t about sleep mode.
The Windows Mobile Device Center issue
There are reports that Vista x64 SP1 has been released accidentally to Windows Update. ITWire received emails from users who experienced problems after installing SP1. One is that the memory and performance rating is not displayed anymore, and the other one is about the Windows Mobile Device Center. Based on the screenshot they published, the latter one looks familiar to me. I got the same meaningless error message sometimes when I connected my Windows Mobile 6 device to different desktops running the Windows Mobile Device Center. The only solution I found was to reset Windows Mobile. I don’t know if this is really the same problem, but it could be that SP1 causes an authentication problem which probably was the reason for the error message in my case.
GPMC (Group Policy Management Console) will be uninstalled
If you manage Group Polices for Vista machines in your PC, then I wouldn’t install SP1 because GPMC will be removed after the installation. Microsoft plans to release a new version, but as far as I know, this is not yet the case.
The sound problem
The German Windows Vista blog and Aaron discovered a problem with the sound system. It seems that this is related to the driver problem discussed above. However, Microsoft dedicated a particular article (KB948481) to it.
Even though some media are making a big deal out of this SP1 issues, I don’t think that they are really serious so far. Of course, those who are affected might have a different view about it. But do you remember about the troubles that service pack 2 for Windows XP caused? Well, XP is everybody’s darling now.

After installing this upgrade and BEFORE restart the computer, search for “wgaer_m*”. You will find two files. Delete them, then reboot and nothing will happen :-)
