Call of Duty World At War errors (d3dx9_37.dll & Unhandled exception )

I know this isn’t really related to Microsoft in any way but the public beta for Call of duty World At War has just come out and I am a huge fan. You can download yourself a free copy of the game if you go to http://www.callofduty.com/ and register to get a serial number and a download link.

If you are running a Vista machine you will most likely run into some difficulties when running the game for the first time after installation. These errors are:

-Message box displaying missing d3dx9_37.dll (or something along those lines)
-Message Box displaying: “Error during initialization: Unhandled exception caught”

To remedy these problems do the following:

The Missing DLL file (d3dx9_36.dll) is attributed to an outdated version of Microsoft DirectX. Simply point your browser to here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en) to download the Microsoft DirectX 9/10 web download application. This will determine the version of DirectX installed on your system and apply the latest SDK updates accordingly.

After this install is complete the error should no longer appear and the game should run fine.

The second error: “Error during initialization: Unhandled exception caught” is a stupid error attributed to the Way the game uses the Windows Vista playback Device.

To remedy this problem click:
Start>Control Panel>Sound

Right Click on the default playback device (e.g. Speakers) and click properties. From there select the Advanced tab.
To eliminate this error the default playback format must be set at 24 bit 48000Hz (Studio Quality). Simply select this from the dropdown list and apply the settings.

Try launching the game now-Everything should run fine.

Hey there. I downloaded the dll file required and go past the first error. The second error (unhandled exception) popped up and that’s what caused me to stumble onto this article.

I followed your instructions to get to the sound settings but then I realised that my sound was /always/ set at 24/48000.

Not sure what to do? Still having the same error.

Hey,

I’m on Vista Business and am having a problem with your solution. I downloaded the .dll, but when I try to address the sound issue all of my options in the dropdown menu (Sound >>Speakers>>advanced) are 16-bit. Am I out of luck on my OS or am I missing something?

Thanks,
Marshall

I downloaded the .dll file (just googled the file name), but then as for the second problem, my speakers are already set to 24-bit 48000 Hz..

Any advice? The second bit of advice seems a bit dodgy.

Got rid of the dll problem but the second one that people seem to attribute to sound and in the posting I am responding to indicates that it is a Vista issue. Great, I am getting it in XP as well.

FOUND FIX FOR VISTA

Ok at first I was getting the dll problem, so i download it off the net (google it) put the dll in my systems32 folder (”c:/windows/system32/”)

Then i got the “Error during initialization: Unhandled exception caught” message when i opened, and this error became very comon between heaps of people I noticed, some people where able to get around by fixing there sounds settings as listed on most forums on the interweb (and above on this forum).. but like some mine are already on the correct setting and I am still getting the error.. so then..

I right clicked “CoDWaWbeta.exe” file >
“properties” >
then click on the “Compatibility” tab >
Check the “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” box and select “Windows XP (Service pack 2)”

…. Fixed … Enjoy :D

The solution worked, but now I am unable to use anything but stereo settings in the game. This is despite having a 5.1 system. I use Realtek Audio HD S/PDIF (COAX). The speakers in 5.1 on other appz work great.

Any Suggestions?

And.. this is in regards to the FULL version of the game.

Solution for Windows XP users:
————————————

“Unhandeled Exception Error” fixed
It worked for me very well. Solution is as under:

Go to “My Computer”
Right click on it Select “Properties”
“Hardware” then “Device Manager”
Select “Sound video and game control”
There, disable “UniModem full Duplex Audio Device”

Now run the game & Enjoy

If all else fails try this:

Edit your shortcut file for the multiplayer exe and add a command so that it would look like this:

GamePath\CoDWaWmp.exe +seta com_startupIntroPlayed 0

Long story short: I found that the crash happens during retrieval of player profiles. That command simply tricks the game as if the intro movie for the multiplayer has not been played yet. If the game thinks it is the first time the multiplayer has been run, It does not retrieve the player profiles.

Ok, so I think I fixed my problem “Unhandled exception error” or atleast I was able to play and feel satisfied. Better than a sparatic 15min game to 3 min game with restarts mixed in between. I have been playing since about 5 mins after my last comment. I rolled back my driver for my video card from the newest version of Nvidia drivers ver. 178.24 to 175.19 It totaly worked for me. At first I went back too far and my 8800GT was not recognized. I really hope this helps. That Directx 9 error was starting to send chills down my spine.

Lisa your post no. is 25. Follow the post #19.
Add 1 thing more.
When you are in device manager, scan once, this will refresh your installed or uninstalled hardware status. Then you must have unimodem disabling feature. Other wise reinstall sound card or the whole Windows xp with Service Pack 3.
Hope this will fix your problem…..

I’m having the issue reported by Ryan - 5.1 doesn’t work. Kick up a storm about it, this needs to be fixed. Realtek and Creative soundcards seem to be the common feature between sufferers.

xp
run dxdiag, see if your sound card is running as ‘emulated’ if it is, go into regedit, search for words “device presence”. Change emulated to 0, VXd to 1 and WDM to 1. Find all of them and change.
If you have trouble with that, maybe try to manually navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaResources\DirectSound\Device Presence

Alright, so I have banged my head against the wall trying to solve this for days. I run Vista 32 bit, and the sound/speaker fix didn’t do squat for me. Finally, in a stroke of dumb luck, I went into my Catalyst video settings via the control center (ATI 4850) and turned on the support for DXT Textures. You can find this checkbox under 3D->More Settings.

If you are having problems with the unhandled exception error with Vista and you are running an ATI card, I highly suggest you check out this setting and make sure it is turned on.

Hope that helps!

I think this solution can help.

At first time I installed the game without installing punket ( or something like that, because I saw from the description it’s just for anti-cheating) and without directX 9.0c too ( because I already had).
And I have that “unhandled exception caught” problem.

I uninstall and install again, and this time I install both punket and directX 9.0c when asked. And I eventually see the menu.

Unfortunately, just the menu. After I clicked on new game, it returned back to the menu. Nothing happened. Someone says that it’s the bug that conceal the loading screen, but I waited more than 10′. Anyway I had passed that damn “unhandled exception” trouble. Hope this works with you too.

Someone pls tell me how to solve my problem.

I eventually find a solution for that. I have just disconnected ( disable my Local Area Connection at the tight bottom ) and finally the game loaded.
Someone should tell Treyarch to be more responsible with their products. I experienced a lot more bugs in the game later.

Hi guys,
I was looking around for a fix to this error message and others:
Error: Could not load material “water_dynamic_spray”

Well…like many of you, I don’t have the unimodem…drivers, but they were installed from the time when I was using my old HSP56modem. Cod WAW is not using the primary sound card by default so you have to uninstall your “”"DIAL UP”"” modem drivers (if you no longer use’em) only dialup modems!!! If you can’t find the drivers on your add/remove hardware, look into modems and remove any modem listed there.

It worked for me (and I was about to give up) so it may work for you too.

1. Follow the steps about the Audio part…setting default playback format to 24 bit 48000Hz

(for Windows Vista) and disable Unimodem Half Duplex in Device Manager (for Windows XP)
2. Install DirectX 9.0c (November 2008)
3. Install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
4. Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable or Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1

Redistributable
5. and the most important, for Nvidia video cards, install Forceware 175.19 driver (if using

unsupported Nvidia video cards like GeForce 9500GT, install Forceware 175.31 Beta driver)
6. Delete all videos in the the Videos folder except for default.bik

i have tried many solutions to fix the “unhandled exception” error. none have worked. i tried to find that sound modem to disable it but like many of us here, i don’t have it (unless its under another name). i downloaded both patch 1.1 and 1.2, and got on to the multiplayer screen for a bit. however, when i attempted to create an online profile it crashed again with this same error. i have tried everything, from running in compatibility mode to that “emulated” fix another poster suggested. nothing has worked so far. is there anything else i should try that could fix the multiplayer game?

for those experiencing a black screen problem in solo player (but can hear the game sounds), the fix is quite simple…set your video settings (go to the game options, graphics, video settings) and set it on 640*800 or the one above. poof the game is fixed

I just wanted to share my success story with this game. I spent no fewer than 5 hours after buying it over the weekend scouring the Internet looking for a solution. I ran into the “unhandled exception caught” error. I have a QuaCPU Q6600 2.40GHz and GeForce 8400 GS running XP Service Pack 2. I did the following as advised by many posters but none worked for me:
1. Update my graphics card drivers.
2. Upgrade to Service Pack 3.
3. Disable the Uni-Modem Half-Duplex audio device.
4. Disable dial-up modem.
5. Disable Local Area Connection and Internet access.
6. Decrease the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level after running DxDiag.
7. Re-install the game, DirectX 9.0c, and PunkBuster.
Finally, the only thing that got my game working is to run regedit, search for the words “device presence”, change emulated to 0, VXd to 1 and WDM to 1, and find all of them and change.
Thanks everyone and Martin. You guys rock!!!!!!

One caveat: Despite my high-spec CPU, the game lags seriously when using the default settings. I had to decrease the anti-aliasing from 4x to 2x and use the lowest video mode. The game graphics didn’t seem to suffer much though. Does anyone have any suggestions that will get rid of the lag using the default settings?

I have read all of these fixes and countless others and STILL I crash 30+ times a day. It’s getting to the point where the game isn’t worth the frustration. I’m running windows vista home. I’ve tried the 24 bit sound 48000 studio quality, and when I switch to that, not only do I still crash with the same Unhandled Exception error, but I hear NOTHING, no sound what so ever. Hanuman, i don’t think the default settings work quite right, as i have tried to do just that to no avail. however, play the game on the lowest or second lowest video settings and turn all of the marked “yes” options (except bullet impacts just cause i like realistic warfare) to no. game works like a charm for me now. no lag on the first level and in the Pelileu landing. that being said, i hope someone has a solution that works to get rid of this unhandled exception error other than the audio device “fix” (don’t have it), and all the other “fixes” that just haven’t worked for me. to the person who suggested the regedit fix, how many times does this appear in the directory, because i did this and reset the acceleration to full but it still didn’t work for me.

#58. March 5th, 2009, at 3:07 PM.

War_Fiend, thanks for advice. I used the lowest video settings but never turned off all the marked “yes” buttons since I didn’t get to see your post until I finished the game. Oh well, I can always start a new game with a tougher challenge, and there is always the zombie round to play. Even with the “yes” buttons on, the lag was almost unnoticeable. I wonder why the game developers put in those default settings when they don’t work and virtually every computer is not capable of using them. Good luck with your next game!!!

New update!!!

it seems that for those of us who get the unhandled exception error, the problem is that new profiles are magically appearing that interfere with you being able to play online and consequently give you that unhandled excpetion error. i have figured out that if you go (for xp, i don’t know what its under for vista) to your C:\\folder, documents and settings, administrator (or if you have a college computer like me, its under student), local settings, application data, activision, CodWAW, players, profiles- you can create a new profile. attempt to go online. it will boot you out, but go to the folder mentioned above. delete anything in that folder except the active.txt file and one of the profiles that magically appear in that folder. delete yours and the rest of the ones you won’t be using, then double click on the active.txt file and type that name in exactly as you see it. save it then enter multiplayer. you can now play.

the one downside of this is that it will boot you out during the middle of the game your playing in multiplayer, but its the best alternative (and certainly the only one that works for folks like myself who have tried everything) right now to playing multiplayer.

#60. March 25th, 2009, at 5:10 PM.

i just realized that you don’t need to delete your profile folder, just so long as you switch between profiles when you edit the active.txt file.

I am using the beta client (multiplayer) and i was really hoping to playing it but i cant seem to get past this forsaken error, my screen goes black and it looks like its gonna load fine… but then goes to the error and crashes. Hi all,

-THIS IS THE XP FIX-

I bought this because it was half price the other day through Steam and encountered the “Unhandled Exception Caught” error.

I solved this problem by doing what Martin said in #29. Luckily I am a computer buff and knew exactly what he was talking about but for the slightly less o’fay people here I will explain in detail what to do. Please be aware I run Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3.

Go to “Run” in the “Start” menu on the bottom left hand side of your screen.

In the box that comes up type “regedit” and press “enter”.

In the screen that is displayed you need to go to “edit” at the top of the box and then “find..”

In the “find..” box you need to type in “device presence” and wait for it to search.

It should come up with the files “Emulated”, “VxD” and “WDM”.

You then need to right click on “Emulated” and go to “modify”. Here you change the numbers from 0 to 1.

Again the same for “VxD” to 1.

Again the same for “WDM” to 1.

Once done I would suggest a restart of the PC to flush error entrys.

On restart launch the game. When you select “Multiplayer” it might ask you to “Run in safe mode” click “no” on this and then from there on you should be error free!

Thanks for all the support from the other messages.

Scott

Stopped getting the “unhandled exception” error after I turned off the voice chat. Never used that stuff anyway.
