Lite iCalendar Desktop
Cute ma buggy. Quasi un prodotto.
Amo lo sguardo di questo calendario piccolo cute. Windows Vista ora viene con un calendario quasi-competente denominato, non sorprendentemente, calendario di Windows. Ha relativo proprio insieme degli insetti, ma quasi funziona abbastanza bene. In particolare, può abbonarsi ai calendarii nella disposizione di ICAL (.ics) che sono sul fotoricettore o sulla rete locale e possono anche pubblicare un calendario in quella disposizione localmente o sul fotoricettore.
Poiché ho due calcolatori, è conveniente effettuare il calendario sul tavolo del Vista e fare il laptop di XP “abbonarsi„ a quel calendario. Purtroppo, benchè, il calendario di Windows non funzioni sul laptop ed il calendario di Microsoft che È sul laptop non è compatibile con la disposizione di ICAL. Così una ricerca ha seguito per un calendario compatibile che funzionerà su XP, preferibilmente libero.
Lite iCalendar Desktop è stato liberato più meno di due settimane fa e sembra avere tutte le caratteristiche che desidero. Il più bene di tutti, è libero. Lo ho installato su entrambi i calcolatori e sembra funzionare esattamente lo stesso su Vista x64 come fa su XP x32.
Che cosa gradisco LA MAGGIOR PARTE è l'apparenza fredda. Lo screenshot mostra il tavolo del calcolatore di laptop di XP, con il calendario nel angolo destro superiore in cima ad un tema desktop occupato (prima colazione!). Indica più chiaro contro i precedenti neri che uso normalmente. 
Ciò è “una pelle„ trasparente (apparenza), che gradisco particolarmente, ma il calendario inoltre ha pelli opache di vari motivi e colori. Il formato, la disposizione ed i colori del testo sono quasi completamente registrabili. I giorni con gli appuntamenti o le mansioni previsti sono a colori, mentre i giorni senza sono bianchi. Si libra il mouse sopra tutto il giorno ed aumenta gli schiocchi una finestra piccola che mostra gli eventi di quel giorno. Su entrambi i miei calcolatori ho detto a che Lite iCalendar da abbonarsi ai calendarii pubblicati da Windows Calendar sul calcolatore desktop del Vista e quella parte sembrasse funzionare.
Qui è una lista delle edizioni dell'installazione:
- Sulla partenza iniziale, un errore è comparso con un problema di feste degli Stati Uniti.
Ciò è stata risolta aggiungendo un nuovo calendario di feste degli Stati Uniti dai calendarii pubblici di Google, allora cancellanti una delle entrate del calendario degli Stati Uniti. - L'AIUTO non ha funzionato, dal programma (di destra-scatto ed aiuto) o dalla scorciatoia di AIUTO nel menu di inizio. Ciò è stata risolta cambiando titolo la lima Lite.chm iCal Desktop a Help.chm. Ora funziona da entrambe le posizioni.
- The calendar kept prompting me for a Google username and password, even though I do not use Google Calendar. I set up a dummy Google Calendar and eventually the problem went away, though I think a reboot was part of the solution.
- Initially when I clicked on the “setting” function, the program reported an illegal integer value.
That problem eventually went away. - The hourly time announcement is optional. If you select it, the default sound file is in the folder c:\WINNT\Media, which folder does not exist on either XP or Vista. I changed the default to point to a file in c:\Windows\Media and then it worked.
- It has a setting called “Run the program at start up.” If this is NOT checked, iCalendar nevertheless runs at startup anyway. I deleted the offending registry entry, which was disclosed in MSCONFIG, and that issue went away.
Ongoing issues:
- The HELP file discusses a “weather” function, which does not seem to exist in this “lite” version of the program. In addition, the HELP file is very, very skimpy.
- IMPORTANT: The REMINDER function does not seem to work properly. For example, if the reminder is for 5:00 pm iCalendar may or may not chime at that time. Further, it may show a popup at the correct time, or perhaps later, and the popup seems to disappear almost instantly. I can live with the other bugs, but this one is serious. If you set a reminder, you need to be confident that you will GET the reminder at the set time, not one minute sooner or later.
Windows Calendar has this same failing, by the way. It has a setting in Options labeled “Reminder should show when Windows Calendar is not running.” But the reminder doesn’t always appear, even with that setting checked. I think it always works if Windows Calendar is minimized, but of course that unnecessarily consumes taskbar space.
Rant: I’ve had a calendar with reminders working on a real-time computer (HP 1000) for over 20 years. I wrote it myself; it’s NOT difficult! Is this a problem with Windows, or did two different calendar authors both screw up? Either way, Microsoft certainly screwed up. Why is Microsoft always such a paragon of mediocrity? Heaven knows they have enough money to do the job right the first time if they care to.
The non-Microsoft author might be excused, but not Microsoft for Heaven’s sake. If they’re going to act like the big boys they should do the job right, but somehow I doubt they ever will. End of rant.
Perhaps the solution to the buggy iCalendar is to try the “full” version; it’s only $20 if it works, otherwise nothing. I like the look so much, I’ll probably do that. I hope it has a simple digital clock too; I’d like to move that off the taskbar.
