Desktop iCalendar Lite
Leuk maar met fouten. Een bijna product.
Ik houd van de blik van deze leuke kleine kalender. Het Uitzicht van vensters komt nu met een bijna-bekwame geroepen kalender, zoals te verwachten, de Kalender van Vensters. Het heeft zijn eigen reeks insecten, maar het werkt bijna goed genoeg. In het bijzonder, kan het aan kalenders in (.ics) formaat intekenen ICAL die op het Web of op het lokale netwerk zijn, en het kan een kalender in dat formaat of op het Web plaatselijk ook publiceren.
Aangezien ik twee computers heb, is het geschikt om de kalender op de Desktop van het Uitzicht te handhaven en laptop XP aan die kalender „te hebben intekenen“. Jammer genoeg, niettemin, loopt de Kalender van Vensters niet op laptop, en de kalender van Microsoft die op laptop IS is niet compatibel met het formaat ICAL. Zo volgde een onderzoek voor een compatibele kalender die op XP, bij voorkeur vrije zal lopen.
Desktop iCalendar Lite werd bevrijd minder dan twee weken geleden, en schijnt om alle eigenschappen te hebben die ik wil. Het beste van allen, het is vrij. Ik heb het op beide computers geïnstalleerdt, en het schijnt om het zelfde aan Uitzicht x64 precies te werken dat het op XP x32 doet.
Van wat ik HET MEEST houd is de koele verschijning. Screenshot toont de Desktop van de laptop XP computer, met de kalender in de hogere rechtse hoek bovenop een bezig Desktopthema (ontbijt!). Het toont duidelijker tegen de zwarte achtergrond die ik normaal gebruik. 
Dit is een transparante „huid“ (verschijning), dievan ik vooral houd, maar de kalender heeft ook ondoorzichtige huiden van diverse motieven en kleuren. De de de tekstgrootte, plaatsing, en kleuren zijn bijna helemaal regelbaar. De dagen met geplande benoemingen of taken zijn in kleur, terwijl de dagen zonder wit zijn. Hang de muis over om het even welke dag, en duikt een klein venster op dat de gebeurtenissen van die dag toont. Op zowel van mijn computers heb ik iCalendar Lite om aan de kalenders verteld in te tekenen die door de Kalender van Vensters op de het van het Uitzicht bureaucomputer worden gepubliceerd, en dat deel schijnt te werken.
Hier is een lijst van installatiekwesties:
- Voor aanvankelijk opstarten, verscheen een fout met een probleem van de Vakantie van de V.S.
Dit werd opgelost door een nieuwe kalender van de Vakantie van de V.S. van Openbare Kalenders toe te voegen Google, dan schrappend één van de ingangen van de Kalender van de V.S. - De HULP werkte niet, of van het programma (klik en Hulp) met de rechtermuisknop aan of van de kortere weg van de HULP in het Menu van het Begin. Dit werd opgelost door de dossierDesktop iCal Lite.chm aan Help.chm anders te noemen. Nu werkt het van beide plaatsen.
- The calendar kept prompting me for a Google username and password, even though I do not use Google Calendar. I set up a dummy Google Calendar and eventually the problem went away, though I think a reboot was part of the solution.
- Initially when I clicked on the “setting” function, the program reported an illegal integer value.
That problem eventually went away. - The hourly time announcement is optional. If you select it, the default sound file is in the folder c:\WINNT\Media, which folder does not exist on either XP or Vista. I changed the default to point to a file in c:\Windows\Media and then it worked.
- It has a setting called “Run the program at start up.” If this is NOT checked, iCalendar nevertheless runs at startup anyway. I deleted the offending registry entry, which was disclosed in MSCONFIG, and that issue went away.
Ongoing issues:
- The HELP file discusses a “weather” function, which does not seem to exist in this “lite” version of the program. In addition, the HELP file is very, very skimpy.
- IMPORTANT: The REMINDER function does not seem to work properly. For example, if the reminder is for 5:00 pm iCalendar may or may not chime at that time. Further, it may show a popup at the correct time, or perhaps later, and the popup seems to disappear almost instantly. I can live with the other bugs, but this one is serious. If you set a reminder, you need to be confident that you will GET the reminder at the set time, not one minute sooner or later.
Windows Calendar has this same failing, by the way. It has a setting in Options labeled “Reminder should show when Windows Calendar is not running.” But the reminder doesn’t always appear, even with that setting checked. I think it always works if Windows Calendar is minimized, but of course that unnecessarily consumes taskbar space.
Rant: I’ve had a calendar with reminders working on a real-time computer (HP 1000) for over 20 years. I wrote it myself; it’s NOT difficult! Is this a problem with Windows, or did two different calendar authors both screw up? Either way, Microsoft certainly screwed up. Why is Microsoft always such a paragon of mediocrity? Heaven knows they have enough money to do the job right the first time if they care to.
The non-Microsoft author might be excused, but not Microsoft for Heaven’s sake. If they’re going to act like the big boys they should do the job right, but somehow I doubt they ever will. End of rant.
Perhaps the solution to the buggy iCalendar is to try the “full” version; it’s only $20 if it works, otherwise nothing. I like the look so much, I’ll probably do that. I hope it has a simple digital clock too; I’d like to move that off the taskbar.
