Shrink the Super-sized Back Button

The very first thing you notice in Firefox 3 is its extra large Back button. While it’s actually quite handy—less chance of missing your target!—if the Back button’s just too big for your tastes, it’s as easy as pie to reduce. Just right-click on Firefox’s toolbar, and choose Customize. In the dialog box, select "Use small icons."

Adjust the Smart Location Bar’s Number of Suggestions

The Firefox 3 feature that you’ll get to know and love the most is the new smart location bar’s as-you-type suggestions that learn where you probably want to go as you browse. But if you’re feeling like the number of suggestions is too high or too low? Adjust it to your liking in Firefox’s configuration area. Here’s how.

Enter
about:config
into the address bar and hit Enter.

Press the "I”ll be carefull. I promise!" button. (Because you will be.)

Enter
browser.urlbar.maxRichResults
in the Filter field to reach this preference.

Set it to your desired number of suggestions. Three shown here.

Centod Anti-Spyware 2008 is the latest counterfeit anti-spyware software that creates hassles for computer users around the world. It is believed that Centod Anti-Spyware is a clonze of the notorious Zinaps Antivirus. Just like most fake antispywares, it issues misleading and exaggerated issues. Centod usually installed itself onto your PC without your permission, through Vundo Trojan, Virus or fake software. Centod will display fake system alerts or fake security alerts to trick user to buy the paid version of Centod, in order to remove the potential and reported problems. Not only does it cause your machine to slow down dramatically, it would also put your privacy and data in risk.

It's not a secret, that IPv6 has some "issues". When I've been in Seattle, at last MVP summit, a lot of IT professionals said that, and all of them recommended to disable IPv6 on Windows 2008 or / and Vista machines. Kevin Reeuwijk from "Innovative Technology Weblog" posted a very good article; Outlook Anywhere is ‘broken’ on IPv6 in Windows Server 2008.
So, if you run Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2008 and want to use Outlook Anywhere (aka RPC over HTTP) you probably get a problem. It would not work if the RPC-over-HTTP Proxy and the Exchange Mailbox installed on the same Windows 2008 Server.
To make the long story short, simply unselect IPv6 from the properties of your NIC AND (it's very important) make a changes to the HOSTS file. Simply open up your hosts file and make the following changes:

Comment out the line “:::1 localhost”

Add the following two lines:

<ipv4> <hostname> <ipv4><fqdn></fqdn></ipv4></hostname></ipv4>This will resolve all queries for your computer’s name to its IPv4 address, effectively disabling the use of IPv6 for self-communication. You can confirm
...

We can see the vast improvement of technology in healthcare these days. Other than speeding up the diagnostic procedures, computer aids have helped provide accurate and faster analysis of tests and procedures pertinent towards being able to tell what is exactly wrong with a person who feels something wrong with him.

We see computers in the medical world today. Ranging from the usual laboratory procedures to the advanced imaging needed by radiological services, pinpoint accuracy is what computers are able to provide. Some of them don’t even have to be the high end ones at that. You would be surprised that most of these computers make use of old computers like the first storm of Pentium computers.

A lot of this is due to the fact that not all programs used by medical technology require a Windows platform. Most of them can make do with the standard DOS OS and are usually compiled with old school programs such as FoxPro. Though these programs may sound outdated, it is how they are able to provide medical reports to physicians and specialists that is important. Today, you can get results in an hour rather than waiting a whole day to know what
...

On a Dell Precision 670 (@work), updated to Vista SP1, and a new Dell Inspiron 530 (@friend) with Vista SP1 installed on it when it was received, I have been having issues using the Internet. Every time I restart my computer, my Internet connection won’t work even though the globe indicator on the network connection icon is showing as being online. I can browse my local network but I can’t do anything online. I found that I could temporarily get around this by disabling and re-enabling the Local Area Connection. However, I wanted a more permanent solution:

Disabling IPv6 on Windows Vista SP1

Option 1:

Click on the Start Menu.

Click on Control Panel.

Once the Control Panel is open, click the Classic View link on the left sidebar.

Find and double-click Network and Sharing Center.

Click Manage Network Connections on the left sidebar.

Find your Broadband connection (usually named Local Area Connection) and right-click on it.

On the context-menu, click Properties.

Click the Networking tab.

Remove the checkmark from Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).

Click Ok.

Close all the windows opened in the previous steps.

Restart your computer.

Option 2 (requires modifying the registry but allows you to change one setting to affect all network adapters):

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article -

Practically all companies today are apprehensive on the flow of the market and for Lenovo, taking another crack at a faltering marketing in the desktop division seems to be a move that will certainly draw varied criticism on the timing of its market penetration efforts towards the desktop computing sector.

Apparently, the risk is quite high. No one knows what the future of the desktop computing industry will hold. But with their fingers crossed, apparently Lenovo is banking on a turn for the better any time soon, making a move that most companies would save for later when something clearer sets forth.

Lenovo which bought the PC division of IBM in 2004, has been a prominent figure in the laptop market. With its brand, its association with IBM is something that has carried it towards strides in better business. But as far as desktop computing is concerned, it can really be seen as something as starting once again from scratch.

To kick off their campaign, they have introduced into the market the IdeaCentre K210 Desktop last June 30 towards the consumer desktop market outside of China. But the weird thing about it all is that while other large computer companies
...

I haven’t seen a great Vista theme like this for a while. I think if there where more themes like this then more people would make the switch to Vista. I love the color coordination of the this package. All the different shades of grey and blue work perfectly together. I love the taskbar and how the Start button adds a little color to the whole scene. I know that the creator of this theme has an amazing habit of creating great looking designs. Keep up the great work.
Are you still using Windows XP? If you want to use this theme on XP, then you have to download the XP Theme Patcher. If you’re using Windows Vista, you don’t need the Theme Patcher.

My Take:

I am sorry, but there is a lot of misinformation and bias in this article. Mac OS X's heritage upon which it is built is even older than NT itself. Development on NT started in late '89 when Microsoft hired Dave Cutler, so NT is probably one of the youngest Microkernels next to Linux which was developed around '91 by Torvald. There is also confusion between the code bases, Windows NT is completely different from Windows 9x/3x/1x. The only similarities they shared were version names and API's for those legacy applications you speak of. Microsoft does not need to rewrite Windows, they can clean it up, just like they did for example with the release of Windows XP Professional x64 where they removed things like AppleTalk, POSIX compliance and NetBEUI. You must remember just like Linux or Unix, NT was designed in mind to be a portable OS, in fact during its development it was specifically targeted at different platforms such as PowerPC, Alpha, MIPs, the Intel processor it targeted had to be emulated. So I would revise your analysis before dooming Windows. A lot of the work over years has been targeted at componentising much of Windows where vital components like the Network Stack, graphics don't create lots of dependencies. Rumors are much of the built apps for instance will be optional in Windows 7. Vista's only regret is, it made necessary architectural changes for the sake of security and took a long time to reach market, but out of it all, there were great benefits that developers still haven't managed to dig deep into like the new graphics and communication capabilities. As for supporting legacy applications, Microsoft could even move compatibility to a virtualized stack where old apps work normally on newer versions of Windows without a hitch. Nothing is wrong with the NT kernel and its age is not a problem either.

Hello,

It's been a few months since I last blogged about the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit 3.1 - formerly known as WVHA or Windows Vista Hardware Assessment. Today, I'd like to announce the RTM release of this tool with new capabilities including desktop security assessment, Hyper-V virtualization assessment, and more.

As you know, many of the IT pros out there like you are now spending a lot of time planning for Windows Vista deployments. But many question and challenges remain:

Are my existing PCs compatible to Windows Vista when it comes to Hardware and Device Compatibility?

Will my PCs have BIOS issues after the upgrade to Windows Vista?

Which of my PCs are ripe for an upgrade to Windows Vista? (e.g. CPU too old so it's time to replace them; or just add 512MB system memory and the PCs would be Windows Vista capable!)

What kind of software has been installed?

Are all of my PCs secure? Is Windows Security Center installed? Do they have Anti-Virus or Anti-Malware software installed? How about Windows Firewall settings?

What about application virtualization readiness?

The MAP Toolkit 3.1 is designed to address all of these desktop-side issues from a single tool! The MAP Toolkit is a platform of tools that combines the strength of agentless discovery and report generation capabilities from the previous generation (Windows Vista Hardware Assessment). The pie-chart below is part of an auto-generated readiness report from the MAP Toolkit and it illustrates the level of hardware readiness for Windows Vista upgrades across the desktop infrastructure.

SpywareScanner2008, also known Spyware Scanner 2008, is the latest counterfeit antispyware software that created to dismantle the Internet community. Spyware Scanner 2008 usually installed itself onto your PC without your permission, through Vundo Trojan, Virus or fake software. Spyware Scanner 2008 will display fake system alerts or fake security alerts to trick user to buy the paid version of Spyware Scanner 2008 in order to remove the potential and reported problems. Not only does it cause your machine to slow down dramatically, it would also put your privacy and data in risk. It’s foolish not to take care of the problem immediately.

The temperature levels in most computers today have a significant impact on a PC’s performance. We know of the usual auxiliary fans required to serve as added ventilation but in some cases, the proper cooling for these chips are not enough. Cooling is important and while the fans are trying hard to negate the rising heat levels from using internal chips and processors, Purdue University has reportedly developed a tiny refrigeration system that will surely help a lot as far as CPU temperature levels is concerned.

This is indeed a welcome development considering that many people are forever relying on additional cooling systems for their CPU or laptops.

“Traditionally, you use a fan to blow air on a chip — room temperature air,” said Garimella. “If I could push chilled air onto the chip, then I get a lot more cooling.” The devices are designed to dramatically increase the amount of heat that can be removed from a computer, he added.

The system pumps refrigerants through tiny compressors and tubing. The technology could be integrated into a microprocessor, or it could replace a computer’s traditional air-cooled heat sink.

The new cooling technique will probably be used first in gaming systems and then

...

We have heard on how computers have been pegged to change most issues in everyday living and today we are on the brink of seeing them resolve humanitarian issues through the World Community Grid.

Apparently this has to do a lot with research. Computers are known to be your best bet towards soliciting information through the web and compiled programs through optical storage and for sure this will help enhance the educational level that most people are longing for.

The issue normally stems from the fact that technological investments are pricey. It would take a good Samaritan to make it all work. But today, thanks to the efforts of IBM and the VOA, this stepping stone is within reach. Along with millions of volunteers to make this work, do not be surprised to see another point for technology to the good guys!

The IBM corporation started the World Community Grid more than two years ago. The company continues to provide advice and support to the project. Stanley Litow heads community relations for IBM. He says anyone in the world with a computer connected to the Internet can join the project.

Volunteers download a program from the World Community Grid Web site. Every so

...
