Here's a good surprise: the Event Viewer has had a complete reengineering. The new Event Viewer:

• Can collect events from many systems to one system's log, allowing you to centralize event logs.

• Lets you easily tell it what to do if particular events occur, like telling it to send you an e-mail, run a program, reboot a system, or the like.

• Allows you to create custom queries so you can essentially tweak Event Viewer to show you just the things that you want to see.

• Event Viewer Reports its data in XML.

There are several ways to start Event Viewer
• If you reenabled the Start Run… command as I suggested earlier in this chapter, just click Start/Run… and then fill in eventvwr and click OK.

• If you restored Administrative Tools to your Start menu, then just click Start Administrative Tools --> Event Viewer.

• Alternatively you'll need to do a little spelunking in Control Panel: click Start --> Control Panel --> System and Maintenance and, under "Administrative Tools," click "View event logs."

XML Format Comes to Event Viewer
Yes, I know, you've...

Besides Aero, there’s another way in which Windows Vista has changed user interaction. As millions of Windows users already know, most configuration, installation, and update tasks are performed with the aid of a wizard. The job of a Windows wizard is straightforward: it leads you through a series of questions designed to get the device, piece of software, or Windows component up and running the way you want. For example, if you want to back up files, you could open the Backup and Restore Center and choose the Back Up Files button. You will then see the opening page of a wizard, which asks you a simple question: “Where do you want to save your backup?”

And although it may escape your notice at first, this Wizard dialog box represents a significant change over the way wizards used to work, the first such change to wizard behavior in roughly 10 years.

The standard for the Windows wizard interface design from the time of Windows 98 until now has been something known as Wizard 97. It is the standard still in effect for the wizards used in Windows XP and Server 2003. Vista Aero wizards give the wizards a...

Vista’s most significant overhaul of the user interface can be summed up in a single word: Aero.* That is Microsoft’s brand name for the new look and feel, although its functionality goes beyond just an improved desktop appearance. So, what exactly is Aero? It encompasses many characteristics, including:

Glass. The program windows are now translucent, allowing users to see through programs to get an idea of what’s on the window behind. If you maximize the program, the glass goes away and you get the Vista default application color of gray/black.

Luna was the brand name for the XP visual interface, by the way. One of the big differences between Luna and Aero is that Luna didn’t really add any functionality to the Windows interface, especially when compared to Windows 2000—it just looked different. Aero, on the other hand, does add functionality—Windows Flip 3D, Live Thumbnails, and so on—that isn’t available on a Vista machine that’s not running Aero.

Glowing buttons. This isn’t unique to Aero, but it is part and parcel of the new user experience. Buttons such as Minimize, Maximize, and Close now glow when your mouse hovers over them. You’ll also see this behavior when...

Ubuntu provides a powerful and useful graphical interface. You can perform every type of task, such as finding and opening files and setting up network interfaces, using Ubuntu's graphics. However, Linux also provides a non-graphical and very powerful interface where you type commands at the keyboard instead of clicking a mouse. Microsoft Windows, as a matter of fact, is trying very hard to catch up with Linux and provide non-graphical commands.

Linux computers make extensive use of shells. Shells are programs that provide text-based user interfaces to the Linux operating system. When working in a shell, the user enters a command plus optional arguments, and the shell parses (separates the various parts of a command into usable parts) and then executes the command. Because shells are used to launch commands (programs), they're often referred to as the command line interface (CLI).

Shells provide both the platform to launch programs and a powerful programming environment. Any program that you interactively launch from a shell, you can also launch from a script — you create scripts to automate commands that you would normally manually type at the command line. Shells provide many of the functions you find in programming languages. You...

Adjust the Smart Location Bar’s Number of Suggestions

The Firefox 3 feature that you’ll get to know and love the most is the new smart location bar’s as-you-type suggestions that learn where you probably want to go as you browse. But if you’re feeling like the number of suggestions is too high or too low? Adjust it to your liking in Firefox’s configuration area. Here’s how.

Enter
about:config
into the address bar and hit Enter.

Press the "I”ll be carefull. I promise!" button. (Because you will be.)

Enter
browser.urlbar.maxRichResults
in the Filter field to reach this preference.

Set it to your desired number of suggestions. Three shown here.

This obviously stems from the fact that most people today would be wise to use a Windows Vista since Windows XP will no longer be in the market if you need to reformat or buy a new PC.

Banking on the old ones may get you into problems such as slower computing and eventually banging your head on the wall because your PC is so slow. We all know that people want speed when they work or use their PC and apparently if you put both these developments together, you need to be wise in spending and buying your next computer station.

For most it may seem unfair. Being forced to upgrade your hardware and software is something that not all people can easily do. For one thing, thanks to the contribution of the economic crisis, any average consumer would want to save as much as possible.

In short, computer upgrades are common for companies or
...

This is not a registry hack. We are merely using the registry to discover CLSIDs (Class Identifiers).
The idea behind this tip is to create a folder which is invisible to the Vista indexer. Please be aware that the files are neither encrypted, nor hidden from anyone looking with Windows Explorer. To my mind this limitation confines the usefulness of this tip to special situations. However, from a learning point of view this tip is most instructive.
Topics for Vista's Secret Folder

Instructions to Create a Secret Folder
For your files to remain hidden, this secret folder needs a special extension .{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}.
Create a normal folder, for example stuff. Speed-Up Windows Vista's Start Menu SearchWhen you perform a search using the search box in the start panel, Windows Vista automatically searches the file index as well. The file index can be quite large because it includes all the files on your hard drive. One way to speed-up searching in your Start Menu applications is to narrow the scope of the search so that it does not include files on the hard drive:

Method 1: Registry Hack1.
Open registry editor using regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer and select Advanced.
3. Find and right-click on Start_SearchFiles and select Modify.
4. Set the Value to 0.
5. Restart the Explorer.exe process or reboot the computer.

Method 2: Start Button1. Right-click on the Start Button and select Properties.
2. Click on the Customize button.
3. Uncheck Search Communications.
4. Set Search Files to Don't Search for files.
5. Click OK.

Deep inside the bowels of Windows Vista, there's a secret Administrator account, and it's different from the normal administrator account you most likely have set up on your PC. This Administrator account is not part of the Administrator group. (Confused yet? You should be.) It's a kind of superadministrator like a root account in unix & by default it is turned of & hidden (In describing this hack, we'll always use the capital "A" for the secret Administrator account, and a lowercase "a" for a normal administrator account.)

In versions of Windows before Windows Vista, the Administrator account wasn't hidden, and many people used it as their main or only account. This Administrator account had full rights over the computer.

In Windows Vista, Microsoft changed that. In Vista, the Administrator account is not subject to UAC<user> , but normal administrator accounts are. So the Administrator can make any changes to the system and will see no UAC prompts.

Turning on the Administrator account is straightforward. First, open an elevated command prompt by typing cmd into the Search box on the Start menu, right-clicking the command prompt icon that appears at the top of the Start menu,</user>...

If you’ve been following our site you’re probably already familiar with how the about:config works in Firefox, but since several of these tips utilize the about:config screen I figured it wouldn’t hurt to provide a crash course. So before we dive into the tweaks glance through to make sure you know how to make the adjustments, or just reference this section when you need it.

1. Start Firefox.

2. Type about:config into the address bar and press Enter. When you’re presented with the warning screen click the I’ll be careful, I promise button.

3.You should see a long list of hidden settings that look meaningless and confusingly complicated.

4. Now comes the fun part of actually modifying and/or creating new values.

- If I tell you that the key already exists then you can type the name of the preference in the Filter box, and it will instantly show only the matching results. Once you find the preference you’re looking for just double-click on it to change the value.

- If I tell you that the key does not exist you will need to create a new value manually. Don’t be intimidated… it’s not...

Microsoft to Stop Selling Windows XP Today 2/7/08

Microsoft Corp. is scheduled to stop selling its Windows XP operating system to retailers and major computer makers today, despite protests from a slice of PC users who don't want to be forced into using XP's successor, Vista.

Once computers loaded with XP have been cleared from the inventory of PC makers such as Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co., consumers who can't live without the old operating system on their new machine will have to buy Vista Ultimate or Vista Business and then legally "downgrade" to XP.

Microsoft will still allow smaller mom-and-pop PC builder shops to buy XP for resale through the end of January. A version of XP will also remain available for ultra-low-cost PCs such as the Asus Eee PC.

A group of vocal computer users who rallied around a "Save XP" petition posted on the industry news site InfoWorld had been clamoring for Microsoft to keep selling XP until its next operating system, Windows 7, is available. The software maker has said it expects to release Windows 7 sometime in 2009.

Last week, Microsoft said it would provide full technical support for...

It's not a secret, that IPv6 has some "issues". When I've been in Seattle, at last MVP summit, a lot of IT professionals said that, and all of them recommended to disable IPv6 on Windows 2008 or / and Vista machines. Kevin Reeuwijk from "Innovative Technology Weblog" posted a very good article; Outlook Anywhere is ‘broken’ on IPv6 in Windows Server 2008.
So, if you run Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2008 and want to use Outlook Anywhere (aka RPC over HTTP) you probably get a problem. It would not work if the RPC-over-HTTP Proxy and the Exchange Mailbox installed on the same Windows 2008 Server.
To make the long story short, simply unselect IPv6 from the properties of your NIC AND (it's very important) make a changes to the HOSTS file. Simply open up your hosts file and make the following changes:

Comment out the line “:::1 localhost”

Add the following two lines:

<ipv4> <hostname> <ipv4><fqdn></fqdn></ipv4></hostname></ipv4>This will resolve all queries for your computer’s name to its IPv4 address, effectively disabling the use of IPv6 for self-communication. You can confirm
...

We can see the vast improvement of technology in healthcare these days. Other than speeding up the diagnostic procedures, computer aids have helped provide accurate and faster analysis of tests and procedures pertinent towards being able to tell what is exactly wrong with a person who feels something wrong with him.

We see computers in the medical world today. Ranging from the usual laboratory procedures to the advanced imaging needed by radiological services, pinpoint accuracy is what computers are able to provide. Some of them don’t even have to be the high end ones at that. You would be surprised that most of these computers make use of old computers like the first storm of Pentium computers.

A lot of this is due to the fact that not all programs used by medical technology require a Windows platform. Most of them can make do with the standard DOS OS and are usually compiled with old school programs such as FoxPro. Though these programs may sound outdated, it is how they are able to provide medical reports to physicians and specialists that is important. Today, you can get results in an hour rather than waiting a whole day to know what
...

On a Dell Precision 670 (@work), updated to Vista SP1, and a new Dell Inspiron 530 (@friend) with Vista SP1 installed on it when it was received, I have been having issues using the Internet. Every time I restart my computer, my Internet connection won’t work even though the globe indicator on the network connection icon is showing as being online. I can browse my local network but I can’t do anything online. I found that I could temporarily get around this by disabling and re-enabling the Local Area Connection. However, I wanted a more permanent solution:

Disabling IPv6 on Windows Vista SP1

Option 1:

Click on the Start Menu.

Click on Control Panel.

Once the Control Panel is open, click the Classic View link on the left sidebar.

Find and double-click Network and Sharing Center.

Click Manage Network Connections on the left sidebar.

Find your Broadband connection (usually named Local Area Connection) and right-click on it.

On the context-menu, click Properties.

Click the Networking tab.

Remove the checkmark from Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).

Click Ok.

Close all the windows opened in the previous steps.

Restart your computer.

Option 2 (requires modifying the registry but allows you to change one setting to affect all network adapters):

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article -
