So is Ubuntu 8.10 Slower?
I’m beginning to think that Phoronix was right!
Although it didn’t feel slower right after the clean install, I’m getting some strange post-install slowdowns on my machine. Again, unlike Phoronix, I haven’t done any specific benchmarks, this is all “perceived speed”. I’m noticing that over the past few days, when I’ve rebooted to apply updates, it seems to take just a little bit longer each time. Also, just after logging in, there is about a 15 second delay that has developed with just Wallpaper and mouse-cursor before the panels appear and I can interact with the desktop. I’ve also noticed for a few applications (Pidgin and the Last.FM player specifically) when I launch them they seem to hang for a second and a “Launching” tab is staying on my task-bar for about 30 seconds after the application opens.
I hope this doesn’t continue, becuase this is disappointing. I will not tolerate a sluggish desktop. I’ll either move back to 8.04 ( it is LTS after all) or move on to something different - Fedora 10 is right around the corner, also I haven’t tried out the GNOME variant of Mandriva either…
