Some praise for Fedora, and some other stuff too…

You know, I wrote out this long post, and just deleted all of it. I don’t really feel like “explaining” myself right now, but here are some statements/facts … think of each paragraph as a separate thought:

Fedora’s Live USB installer for Windows is great.

The USB creator included in Ubuntu 8.10 sucks.

Thanks to Fedora’s Live USB creator I can have a Linux install that I can carry around in my pocket, customize, install software on, and use whenever I feel like it, and yet keep Windows on my PC for “normal” stuff.

I don’t spend enough time doing “normal” stuff on my PC anymore.

I bought a new video card yesterday – the one I had was crap…I was out of the “Video Card” loop and I was lied too when I bought it. The new one is awesome.

I ran Linux exclusively for as long as I did because I couldn’t play games under Windows because of the crappy video card.

The company I work for rocks: Because of the unexpected year-end bonus Friday, I could afford to buy the new video card (which did I mention rocks?).

I have neglected Music in my life, and it was once my best friend.

Linux audio software sucks.

Cakewalk and Finale rock!

I let myself get way too “involved” in the Linux “culture” and the Linux “community”.

There are lots of things Linux is a great platform for – a home desktop system just isn’t one of them (for many people). Ironically, it might be a better system for “grandma” than for a “geek”, unless that Geek is a programmer that wants to contribute to open source software for the “Grandma” to use.

I have spent too much time in the last 2 years helping rude, ungrateful people with Linux.

I shouldn’t have to feel like I’m on a job interview to “ask for permission” to help a Linux project with it’s problems on a volunteer basis.

Windows Live Writer is awesome – I still haven’t found anything that touches it on Linux.

I don’t “hate” Microsoft, Bill Gates, Steven Ballmer or even Windows. That in itself makes it hard to fit into any Linux community – I have often been treated like an Operating System Antichrist or something.

Open Source rocks as a whole – I just created a “mostly” open source Windows install today for myself…See my old post When will the Operating System No Longer Matter.

My new video card rocks – did I mention that already? Oh, and CS:Source looks awesome on a 22” Widescreen LCD w/ Full AA and Antistrophic Filtering @ 1680×1050 resolution.

For a change, I want to “use” my computer rather than constantly tweak, reload, upgrade, break and otherwise harass it.

I want to use my computer for something other than helping other people use an operating system that really isn’t ready for the home desktop yet.

All the Ubuntu community cares about is if the next version of Ubuntu will have a new desktop theme, and when they can find nothing better to argue about, they bicker about the default wallpaper in whatever version is current.

Vista doesn’t suck – in fact, it’s better than XP at this point. Windows 7 will be even better.

My “favorite” platform is still the Mac OS.

Ok, now, before I go to bed, I’m going to go play another round of Counter-Strike:Source on my new Video Card (which rocks, btw), on my Vista operating system (that doesn’t suck), and can actually play the game (unlike Linux – don’t mention Wine – it’s not the same experience), once I go to sleep I’ll dream about Santa bringing me some new games to play on my Video Card (that is awesome) that I was able to afford because my employer is awesome, and maybe tomorrow I’ll compose a new tune in Finale, which also doesn’t run properly in Wine, but runs fine under Vista (which doesn’t suck btw), and MAYBE if I feel like it, I’ll take my keys out of my pocket and stick in my USB drive and play with Fedora for a few minutes now that I have a Linux install I can carry around and use whenever I want to since Fedora’s LiveUSB creator is awesome and Ubuntu’s doesn’t work (or at least doesn’t boot after you go through the process of creating the LiveUSB drive). Now – let me just hit “Publish” in Windows Live Writer (which is awesome).

w00t! I almost feel like a “normal” Geek again ;-)
