#4. June 20th, 2008, at 8:06 PM.
I just type “ta” into Visa Start (for me this does not dissapear) then click on “Taskbar and Start Menu” then Auto-hide, apply : then Auto-hide, apply. Now the task bar is back.

Thank you so much! Charlie
You save me so much work by sharing your knowledge, you save me such a big headache and crying and blaming VISTA. I have a deadline for an important application. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH

Found a quicker way to sort this out if it is a reguar occurance
Go to this website
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Go to line 164. and select "Restore Taskbar to Default Functionality"
Save it to your desktop if you want (As I have), it should be a .vbs file.
Each time your taskbar disappears double click the icon and click yes when prompted, this will restart the Windows Explorer Shell during which your desktop icons will momentarily disappear. Once complete another dialogue box will appear, click ok.
Your taskbar will be restored.
N.B. Any windows/folders that are open for example My Music or Documents Etc. will be closed during the process. Internet explorer windows and other programmes will stay open and should not be effected.
This fix works with Windows XP and Windows Vista

On waking up computer found that taskbar had 'disappeared' although top of Vista start button still just visible. This seemed to suggest the display settings had somehow changed for the external monitor. Checking in the display settings (Control Panel/Personalization/Display Settings) I found that although the resolution was correct, the screen refresh rate had changed from 60MHz to 59MHz. Changed it back to 60 and my screen was back to normal - until the next time it goes to sleep!

Hover over the top toolbar to bring it up....
Click on tools and deselect fullscreen...
Don't know why mine ended up like this but this cured the toolbar and disappearing taskbar.
You may also need to temporarily unlock the toolbar if things need rearranging up there

you can also just set your screen saver to come on in the minimum amount of time (1 minute), wait for it to come on, and then shake the mouse or touch the pad, and BAM the vanishing bar is back, discovered this little trick by accident, and at least it only takes one minute of doing NOTHING to get it back.... sure beats a restart, or going in and clicking a bunch of crap.

Just fix it! PS> This never happened the first 9 months of me having Vista. I suspect it arrived with an "update".

This happens to me several times a day on a Dell Vostro 1700. Every time I unplug my dual monitor to go to meetings the taskbar dissapears. Something as fundemental as this should have been fixed BEFORE the Vista release, much less a year after!
