Use Vista’s Instant Search to Your Advantage

In the interest of fast searchings, Windows Vista has the Instant search a very useful tool instead of spending time examining those files buried in your harddrive. It improves desktop search but squeezes up performance out your computer. There are some work arounds for it.

If you extra hard drive lying around and you have a very large file search index chances are it would take a toll on your present harddrive now you can point it to another location such as ypur spare harddrive.
TO Change the Vista Search Index Location

  1. Click Start then Type index in the search box
  2. Click Indexing Options in the search results
  3. Click Advanced -> then Click Select New
  4. Browse to the new location of the search index on the leftside of the folder
  5. Click OK -> restart your Computer and your done!

Now if by some chance you are paranoid like me, you can exclude your “private folders” from the search index.
Hide your “Private Folder” from the Search Index

  1. Click Start then Type index in the search box
  2. Click Indexing Options in the search results
  3. Click Modify
  4. Click Show all locations (If UAC is ON, Click Agree)
