Before getting to the SP1, a series of 3 prerequisites had to be installed first (It was 3 for me since I’m running Windows Vista Ultimate, but users who aren’t running Ultimate or Enterprise will only have 2 to install since BitLocker is not included in the other Windows Vista SKUs). I talked to Product Manager David Zipkin who explained what these prerequisites are for. The first prerequisite includes updates to the servicing stack. The second prerequisite is an update for BitLocker-capable PCs (Windows Vista Enterprise and Windows Vista Ultimate) to ensure proper

BitLocker Encryption Design and Deployment Guides

The Windows BitLocker Design and Deployment guides describe the various aspects of planning for deploying Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption for Windows Vista® Enterprise and Windows Vista® Ultimate computers in an enterprise environment. The document is organized in two guides, and you should carefully consider each guide before you deploy BitLocker Drive Encryption.

Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption Design Guide
This guide provides a systematic approach when planning for BitLocker deployment and highlights the main decision points. This guide is intended for use by an infrastructure specialist or system architect. It assumes that you have a good understanding of how BitLocker and TPM work on a functional level.

Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption Deployment Guide
This guide provides detailed instructions on how to prepare Windows Vista images for BitLocker and how to deploy BitLocker in an enterprise environment. This guide is intended for use by a deployment specialist or deployment team. It assumes that you have a good understanding of how automated Windows deployment, Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) schema extension, and Group Policy works.

An Introduction to BitLocker

BitLocker Drive Encryption is an integral new security feature in both Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista to protect servers at locations such as branch offices and mobile computers for roaming users.

BitLocker provides considerable offline data and operating system protection by ensuring that data stored on the computer is not revealed if the machine is tampered with when the installed operating system is offline. It optionally uses a Trusted Platform Module, or TPM, to provide enhanced protection for your data and to assure early boot component integrity. This helps protect your data from theft or unauthorized viewing by encrypting the entire Windows volume. BitLocker Drive Encryption is designed to offer the most transparent end-user experience with systems that have a compatible TPM microchip and BIOS.

The TPM interacts with BitLocker Drive Encryption to help provide protection at system start-up. BitLocker Drive Encryption can also be used on computers without a compatible TPM. Using BitLocker in this way provides the volume encryption capabilities but not the added security of early boot-file integrity validation. Instead, a USB flash drive validates the user’s identity at startup.

BitLocker is configurable through Group Policy. What this means is, with Windows Server…

10 Things - Using BitLocker, even without a TPM

While you may have heard of BitLocker, what you may not know is that you don’t need Trusted Platform Module to use it on your system.

BitLocker Drive Encryption is a new security feature integrated into the Windows Vista operating system that provides considerable protection to the OS and data stored on the operating system volume. BitLocker ensures that data stored on a computer running Windows Vista remains encrypted even if the computer is tampered with when the operating system is not running. This helps protect against “offline attacks” — those made by disabling or circumventing the installed operating system, or by physically removing the hard drive to attack the data separately. In other words, attacks made when the system is not running.

Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption provides increased security by encrypting everything on your hard drive: data, programs and even Windows itself. When you use BitLocker, your system is more difficult to tamper with, and thus you are better protected if your computer is ever lost or stolen. BitLocker does not replace the need to use a strong password and other vital security features, but it does make it much harder for anyone else to
