Tweemaal nu binnen zo vele maanden ben ik de trotse ontvanger van een BSOD op XP geweest. De neerstortingen waren identiek aan elkaar met slechts diverse adressen die verschillend zijn (modules die in een verschillende plaats en dergelijke worden geladen). Zij schijnen door een insect in w29n51.sys veroorzaakt te zijn; de neerstortingen zijn van de (a) verscheidenheid IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. w29n51.sys is de „Draadloze LAN Intel® Bestuurder“. Algemeen bekend, stel ik een versie in werking die niet het recentst waarschijnlijk is. Maar het is interessant dat googling de relevante stapelingangen (w29n51+0x1291, w29n51+0xa6af) verschijnt geen klappen. Ook van belang is dat het bestuurdersdossier grotere dan 3 MB - meer dan 3 keer de grootte van het volgende grootste bestuurdersdossier in %systemroot% bestuurders \ system32 \… is Koorden toont een groot aantal verbose logboek-type berichten die men kan vermoedelijk veroorzaken om via één of andere configuratie, evenals gegevens die „in tabelvorm worden geregistreerd“ plaatsen.

Na vorige BSOD in Uitzicht, opende ik op elkaar inwerkend aan Uitzicht het programma als beheerder (ik loop gewoonlijk als standaardgebruiker), en ik werd begroet met een dialoog informerend me over een „ernstige fout“ of dergelijke. Ik verkoos om updates aan het probleem te controleren. Wat terugkwam was meer dan ik dacht, maar niet werkelijk dat alles nuttig voor mijn bijzondere situatie.

Recently, after resuming my Vista laptop from hibernation, I was greeted with a rather strange wait, followed by a blue screen of death. Analysis of the dump yielded the following:

THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER (ea)
The device driver is spinning in an infinite loop, most likely waiting for hardware to become idle. This usually indicates problem with the hardware itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.
If the kernel debugger is connected and running when watchdog detects a timeout condition then DbgBreakPoint() will be called instead of KeBugCheckEx()and detailed message including bugcheck arguments will be printed to the
debugger. This way we can identify an offending thread, set breakpoints in it, and hit go to return to the spinning code to debug it further. Because KeBugCheckEx() is not called the .bugcheck directive will not return bugcheck
information in this case. The arguments are already printed out to the kernel debugger. You can also retrieve them from a global variable via
“dd watchdog!g_WdBugCheckData l5″ (use dq on NT64).
On MP machines (OS builds <= 3790) it is possible to hit a timeout when the spinning thread is interrupted by hardware interrupt and ISR or DPC routine is running at the time

With a new major release of a new operating system, one would think that there is so much new stuff to look at and play with that nobody would obsess over an icon. That is not the case, apparently, as opinions flare over Apple’s representation of Windows PCs in Leopard.

One of the new features in Leopard is easy access to computer on the local network, which show up, conveniently, on the left side of the window. Like with nearly all things, Apple has paid a lot of attention to the feature, to the point that the icons of each and every computer there tries to match what the computer product actually looks like on its owner’s desk. With Macs this is easy, since Apple can quickly identify the exact model of the networked machine, but with a PC, things are a bit more complicated since there are so many makes and parts in them.
