You can apply, create, and save themes directly from within the Personalization Control Panel in Windows 7. When you create a theme for Windows 7, Windows 7 collects desktop backgrounds, sounds, mouse pointers and icons and puts it into an .themepack file. That file can be shared and them theme can then be applied on another Windows 7 PC.

With 25GB of free online storage on Windows Live SkyDrive, you can share quite a few Windows 7 themes with friends and family.

For most Windows XP users today, there is little to consider as far as changing your current default Windows XP Theme. You can choose between two ways:

The Traditional Way

1. Go to the Control Panel and look for the Display Icon and double click on it.
2. Once inside, you will immediately see the current theme which is usually the Windows XP theme. If you click on the field, you will see other default themes. Normally if it is a first time installation and you haven’t downloaded any new themes, only the Windows Classic options theme will be there for you to check out.
3. If you have downloaded any other themes, just use the browse option and point it to the directory where you placed them. Then save and apply and you get a totally new makeover.

For more themes you can apply, you can go to reliable sites such as Themeworld.com which normally has a number of themes over there that you can download. A word of caution though. There will be a lot of sites offering free theme downloads. Unless you are sure that they are reliable based on recommendations, don’t think of even considering downloading them. They may give you more than a theme like a virus or spyware for your troubles.

The other way is of course right clicking on the main desktop. Once the menu comes out, select properties and you will get the same window as you did for the ones enumerated above. Follow each step as well.

Windows seems to have an insatiable appetite for fonts. A new installation starts out with the standard ‘core’ fonts, and there are around 20 of them, but within a very short time you could find your fonts folder has somehow acquired scores and sometimes hundreds of new ones. The Windows Font viewer in Control Panel doesn’t really tell you much, unless you open each file, so here’s a better way to see what you’ve got. Firefox with its default configuration does not integrate well with kde . Now you will see how to setup firefox as default client in the following two cases

1 ) Clicking on a email link in a webpage should create a new email with kmail.

Start firefox and type the following in the url bar: about:config

A big table with configuration options will appear in the main browser window.
Look for the item network.protocol-handler.external.mailto and make sure its value is set to true. The value is the right most piece of text in the row for that item. Right-click on that line and select “toggle” in the pop-up menu to toggle if necessary. (more…)

One of the most frustrating moments of my morning is getting to work and sitting there for 10 minutes while my computer boots up. Most mornings, I can get a cup of coffee and visit coworkers while my computer starts and Outlook, IE, and the other applications I use regularly open. My wait time is even more frustrating when I have an early meeting and need a document, but spend the first half of the meeting waiting for my computer to start.

One way I’ve learned to save time in the morning is to put my PC into hibernation mode in the evening. By putting my PC into hibernation mode, all the applications and documents I had open
will be exactly the same as they were when I left the previous evening. Hibernate saves an image of your desktop with all open files and documents, and then it powers down your computer. (more…)

The System tool in Control Panel uses currentspeed to do its reporting rather than maxspeed, but the System tool may display the wrong clock speed for the Central Processing Unit (CPU).

As of January 2002, Windows XP uses the currentspeed value rather than the maxspeed value because the maxspeed value was reporting inconsistent values.

After startup, the processor may not correctly reflect its correct speed until a program utilizes processor cycles.

The computer basic input/output system (BIOS) in some laptop computers may throttle the processor because of heat, load, power AC/DC. (more…)
