2007 has been a busy year when it comes to computer security, with all kinds of threats aiming to be deployed on people’s computers. Trojan horses, malware, viruses, spam and hack attacks, they have all joined their forces to break into our systems. Because of that, security companies from all over the world struggled to build new solutions or to update the existing ones, just to prove the consumers that, somewhere beyond these attacks, there’s someone who can protect them.

Many people think that installing an antivirus application is enough to protect the computer, but it has been proved several times that a simple Trojan horse can easily invade your system and access your sensitive information. All they need is a software vulnerability, which could be used for connecting to the computer and executing a malicious file. From this point, it’s all up to the attacker. (more…)

How to Remain Secure on Cyber Monday

With Cyber Monday almost here, it’s very important to equip your computer with powerful and well-developed technologies which would be able to defend you and keep your data secure during the entire holiday shopping season. Today, the Zone Alarm developers, Check Point Software Technologies, offered several pieces of advice on how to remain secure and buy products online without any threat.

For those of you who don’t know what Cyber Monday is, it marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season. This day is usually the best time for shopping because most merchants launch special offers and prices for a wide category of products, all of them accessible via the Internet. Because millions of consumers will go online for shopping, some bad-intended persons a.k.a. attackers, phishers, scammers, hackers (you can call them however you want) will surely attempt to steal your money, products or even financial information. Internet Investigator

Who or what is your computer talking to right now? You may think that just because your web browser or email program is not running your PC is offline. Think again. If you have a broadband connection then the chances are it is constantly chattering away, sending and receiving data. Most of it is innocuous and your Firewall and security programs should block the really bad stuff but there’s a lot of other, sometimes mysterious communications going on in the background, which could be slowing your connection down, or maybe aeven malware sending your personal details to heaven knows where.

Here’s a way to find out what’s going on. Go to Run on the Start menu and type cmd then press OK and this will open a DOS like Command window. (more…)

Desktop Security

Well this entry deals with the current security setup I have on my computer.
And explains why I have them installed.

Security comes in several layers I'm not talking about OSI.

1. Router Firewall / NAT.
2. Software Firewall (Application based firewall)
3. Hostbased Intrusion Protection (HIPS)
4. Antivirus.
5. Anti Spyware.

1. The first one is pretty simple either you have it or you don't.
My router I got with my broadband comes with NAT but no Firewall.
NAT = Network Address Translation.
NAT offers a nice first layer of defense for hackers, because they need to figure out what the internal network is.

The internal network can be easy to figure out on a specially crafted website, there are several websites that show your internal IP address on your network.

eg. http://ip-lookup.net/lan-address

You...
