2007 is een bezig jaar geweest wanneer het over computerveiligheid komt, met allerlei bedreigingen pogend op de computers van mensen worden opgesteld. Trojan paarden, malware, virussen, spam en houweraanvallen, hebben zij zich allen bij hun krachten aangesloten om in onze systemen te breken. Wegens dat, worstelden de veiligheidsbedrijven van overal ter wereld om nieuwe oplossingen te bouwen of de bestaande bij te werken, enkel om de consumenten te bewijzen dat, ergens voorbij deze aanvallen, er iemand is wie hen kan beschermen.

Vele mensen denken dat het installeren van een antivirus toepassing genoeg is om de computer te beschermen, maar men heeft meerdere keren bewezen dat een eenvoudig Trojan paard uw systeem kan gemakkelijk binnenvallen en tot uw gevoelige informatie toegang hebben. Allen zij vereisen is een softwarekwetsbaarheid, die voor het verbinden met de computer en het uitvoeren van een kwaadwillig dossier zou kunnen worden gebruikt. Who or what is your computer talking to right now? You may think that just because your web browser or email program is not running your PC is offline. Think again. If you have a broadband connection then the chances are it is constantly chattering away, sending and receiving data. Most of it is innocuous and your Firewall and security programs should block the really bad stuff but there’s a lot of other, sometimes mysterious communications going on in the background, which could be slowing your connection down, or maybe aeven malware sending your personal details to heaven knows where.

Here’s a way to find out what’s going on. Go to Run on the Start menu and type cmd then press OK and this will open a DOS like Command window. (more…)

Well this entry deals with the current security setup I have on my computer.
And explains why I have them installed.

Security comes in several layers I'm not talking about OSI.

1. Router Firewall / NAT.
2. Software Firewall (Application based firewall)
3. Hostbased Intrusion Protection (HIPS)
4. Antivirus.
5. Anti Spyware.

1. The first one is pretty simple either you have it or you don't.
My router I got with my broadband comes with NAT but no Firewall.
NAT = Network Address Translation.
NAT offers a nice first layer of defense for hackers, because they need to figure out what the internal network is.

The internal network can be easy to figure out on a specially crafted website, there are several websites that show your internal IP address on your network.

(1 pts) : This icon means that the firewall is 'passing' sucessfully the leaktests while setup properly.

(0,5 pts) : This icon means that the firewall is using a generic 'block' which is intercepting the leaktest at an earlier step, whereas there is no network access yet. While on one hand it can appear to be safer, on the other hand the technical alert given requires more knowledge from the user to do the right choice, which is less reliable than a sucessfull pass where the alert is about a network access. Moreover, these kind of protection will alert the user about many other legitimate activities which does not access the network.
