I have reviewed online backup services before, but I never bit the bullet and signed up for any of them. I didn’t want to pay to access my data, and I didn’t like not knowing where exactly the “remote location” was that stored my data. Today I received an email about another service, which gave me a review account.

Crash Plan appears to have taken all the good elements of other online backup services and rolled them into one. For a $20.00, one-time fee, you get the software that will allow you to remotely backup 50 GB of data. Yes… I said 50. There are bigger plans for more money as well as a monthly subscription service.

The cool thing is that this is completely cross platform. You can back up the data from your Windows machine to your Mac. You can back up the Mac data to your Linux box. You can take the… you get the picture. To me, that alone is worth the $20.00. To be able to back up each of my systems

Potential Unlimited

Will Poole (Corporate Vice President) and James Utzschneider (General Manager, Marketing and Communications) work with Microsoft’s Unlimited Potential Group, the company’s effort to bring the benefits of computing to the estimated five billion people around the globe who currently don’t have access to technology. Fresh off the road from recent travels including stops in Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, and Finland, they’ve been working closely with governments, non-governmental organizations, educators, and industry partners to help meet this goal, focusing on programs and products that will transform education for young people everywhere. James explains their mission in some more detail at his blog, Inside UP.

I realize this video is a bit dark in spots — and I apologize for not running it through Stomp before uploading it to YouTube. I suggested doing the interview at the Redmond Peet’s for a few reasons, not thinking that it might be bright outside in the early morning hours. No matter, I’m working with WaggEd to recut the interview and splice in a few photos, clean it up, etc.

The guys who hang out with me on Ventrilo recently got hooked on a PC game called DEFCON. After they explained it all to me, I had to try it for myself. The demo is fully-functioning and free! It has excellent graphics, and a stellar soundtrack that you can now buy on iTunes. DEFCON is definitely addictive, and a lot of fun.

Wirelesspacket explained the premise of the game. Remember the movie WarGames with Matthew Broderick? In the movie, the character Joshua showed the continents and the missiles being launched. This game is almost the same exact interface. Not only are there nuclear weapons, there are fighter planes, radar, and you have to build your own air bases and defenses. You must defend your homeland while trying to destroy the other areas.

According to the game manufacturer:

It’s Global Thermonuclear War, and nobody wins. But maybe — just maybe — you can lose the least.

This game is becoming so popular, you can buy the soundtrack and poster or even use the screensaver!
