By tricking one of your users into visiting a maliciously crafted web page or into opening a maliciously crafted HTML email, an attacker could exploit five of these new vulnerabilities to execute code on your user’s computer, with your user’s privileges. In the worst case, the attacker could gain complete control of the victim computer. If you use Internet Explorer in your network, you should download, test, and deploy the appropriate Internet Explorer patches immediately. The patches fix the newly announced vulnerabilities, in addition to all previous ones.

Exposure:

In a security bulletin released today as part of their monthly patch update, Microsoft describes three vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer (IE) versions 5.01, 6.0, and 7.0.

The worst of these three vulnerabilities has to do with a flaw in the way IE handles a certain error involving file downloads. Triggering this error in a particular way causes memory corruption. By luring one of your users into visiting a malicious web page that forces this error, an attacker can exploit this memory corruption vulnerability to execute code on that user’s computer, with that user’s privileges. Typically, Windows users have local administrative privileges, in which case the attacker could gain complete control of their machines.

The remaining two flaws both involve

Internet Explorer 7 “Updated” - But Not Really…

Steve Reynolds, program manager of the Internet Explorer development team, has just announced an “update” of sorts to Internet Explorer 7 a year or so after its original release in 2006. Never mind the fact that we were promised regular updates and that “Internet Explorer 7 won’t be like IE6″ with regards to lack of new features and updates, what’s up with the list of the things that have changed with this new version!? Have a look for yourself at the “changelog:”

  1. No need for WGA verification in order to get Internet Explorer 7
  2. The menu bar is now visible by default.
  3. The Internet Explorer 7 online tour has updated how-to’s. Also, the “first-run” experience includes a new overview.
  4. We’ve included a new MSI installer that simplifies deployment for IT administrators in enterprises. Learn more about it here.

Interesting… Here’s our take on these “updates”

  1. It really shouldn’t have required WGA in the first place - Microsoft (for some odd reason) guarantees users of pirated versions of Windows “immediate” access to any security-related patches, upgrades, and hotfixes. Doesn’t Microsoft tout Internet Explorer 7 as a security-prioritized upgrade?
  2. Noooo! We love the hidden menu bar! It’s clean, it’s clutter-free, and it gives IE7 a great look. Obviously the reason they’ve put it back is that users had trouble getting the menu to show (hint: press `alt` to make it appear), but who actually uses the menu bar anyway?! At least make it a first-run option… please? Sure, you can make it hidden again by flicking a switch in the options panel, but that’s just so wrong on so many levels…
  3. Not exactly what we’d call an upgrade to Internet Explorer itself so much as it is an improvement to the external documentation. It’s just a file hosted on MS servers that users can opt to view.
  4. Nothing more than an upgrade to the packaging/deployment for Internet Explorer 7, albeit a most-welcome one for sysadmins and software integrators everywhere.

Overworked PC

Can’t go on. Need . . . more . . . memory.

The dreaded “Out of Memory” error is relatively easy to fix when you’re talking storage (short-term solution: delete a file; long-term solution: buy a new hard drive). But when it comes to the other kind of memory, also known as RAM (random-access memory) that’s the internal kind of memory your computing device uses things can get a little bit more complicated.

Are you running your machines ragged? OK, there’s no evidence that an insufficient amount of memory will hurt your hardware at least none that I’ve seen. But you could be running yourself ragged (and compromising your company’s productivity) by ignoring a memory-deficiency within your own organization.

So how do you prevent the dreaded error message from putting a crunch on your profits? Here are three tips. (more…)

Stealth Windows update prevents XP repair

A silent update that Microsoft deployed widely in July and August is preventing the “repair” feature of Windows XP from completing successfully.

Ever since the Redmond company’s recent download of new support files for Windows Update, users of XP’s repair function have been unable to install the latest 80 patches from Microsoft.

Repaired installations of XP can’t be updated

The trouble occurs when users reinstall XP’s system files using the repair capability found on genuine XP CD-ROMs. (The feature is not present on “Restore CDs.”) The repair option, which is typically employed when XP for some reason becomes unbootable, rolls many aspects of XP back to a pristine state. It wipes out many updates and patches and sets Internet Explorer back to the version that originally shipped with the operating system. (more…)
