Windows 7 market share climbing

The release of the public beta of Windows 7 has had a huge impact on the market share of the upcoming operating system. The market share climbed from 0.01% in December 08 to 0.10% in January 09 according to the market share monitoring company Net Applications. The beta was released on January 9 with distribution problems on the first few days which got sorted out later.

The 0.1% market share puts Windows 7 in front of operating systems like Windows NT, Symbian, Windows CE or Android which all got a lower market share according to Net Applications. It should however be noted that the company is monitoring websites and calculates the market share based on the values that are submitted in the headers during the connection. This explains the rather low market shares of the mobile operating systems.

The next operating systems in sight are Windows ME, Mac OS and Windows 98. The most popular opearting systems according to this study are Windows XP with more than 63% market share, Windows Vista with 22.48% and Mac OS X 10.5 with 5.28%
