Will SP3 Save Windows XP?

Will the third and final service pack for Windows XP manage to breath new life into the operating system? Will users and original equipment manufacturers be able to apply enough pressure on Microsoft to keep Windows XP alive? There is even an online petition available to save Windows XP. Anything but to move to Windows Vista. Yes, by all means. Save Windows XP. But from what? Is XP even in need of saving?

Last I checked, Windows XP still accounts for the lion’s share of the operating system market. All other platforms, including Windows Vista, don’t even manage to come close to it. And growing on the operating system market means actually eroding XP’s audience, because there is little elbow room with this ubiquitous platform having dug its roots in deep starting back in 2001. According to Net Applications, XP is credited with 76.91%, while after almost a year since it hit the shelves, Vista has only gone as high as 10.48%. By comparison Mac OS X has a share of 7.31% and all the Linux distributions just 0.63%. (more…)

Get Ready for the Windows Vista Plus Pack

Forget about the Ultimate Extras! Are you ready for the Windows Vista Plus Pack? You had better be! One thing that Ultimate Extras was, looking back to 2007, is a huge disappointment for users of the high-end, Ultimate SKU of Windows Vista. Having released just four “extra” items for the Ultimate edition of the latest Windows client the past year, including Windows DreamScene, Language Packs, BitLocker and EFS Enhancements and Hold ‘Em Poker Game; as well as a very thin selection of both static and animated wallpapers, Microsoft’s Ultimate Extras contributed to providing a limp and unexcited Wow.

Six Caveats – 64-bit Windows Vista

There is little doubt that 64-bit architectures are the future, as far as the parallel evolution of processors and operating systems goes. But when it comes down to Windows, the 32-bit version of the platform will survive not only with Windows Vista, but also with Windows 7. At this point in time, among the scarce details made available by Microsoft about the forthcoming iteration of Windows, to follow Vista, the only sure thing is that Windows 7 will come in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors.

According to estimates from the Redmond company, by mid 2008, the install base of the Windows operating system would surpass the 1 billion milestone worldwide. But the vast majority of those Windows copies will still be 32-bit, largely just Windows XP and Windows Vista. (more…)
