Windows Vista Activation Problems

Windows Vista has had everything but an easy ride since it hit the shelves in January 2007. The operating system was plagued by a luxuriant variety of problems from hardware and software incompatibilities to lack of support and poor performance and reliability. And in this context, Vista has also taken the users out for a ride, making every speed bump count, as Microsoft was applauding the evolved user experience delivered by its latest Windows client. Well, one of the most overlooked aspects among the vast volume of problems associated with Vista are the issues faced by end users when attempting to activate the operating system.

“Activation, also known as Microsoft Product Activation or Windows Product Activation, is an anti-piracy technology designed to verify that Microsoft software products are legitimately licensed. Activation works by verifying that the product key the 25-character code located on your Certificate of Authenticity (usually affixed to your computer) or proof of license label (usually affixed to the installation disc case) is authentic and is not in use on more personal computers than are permitted by the software license”, reads a fragment of the Windows Vista Activation FAQ. Play Around with Windows Vista Boot Screens

With Windows Vista, Microsoft has delivered an evolution in terms of user experience. Still, as the operating system suffers a decent amount of customization, improvements on the Redmond company’s original design are inevitable. And one of the aspects of Vista that could manage with a tad extra eye candy is the boot screen. Now on the adjacent image you can see a portion of the default Vista boot screen, which otherwise is pitch black. Well, nothing to get excited about there, but you have a few options to kick it up a notch.

First off, you can always dig up the Windows Vista hidden boot screen. All you have to do is make your way to the System Configuration Utility and enable the “No GUI Boot” option. Just follow this link in order to get additional details about how to unveil the hidden boot screen in your copy of Vista. The tweak is harmless but, at the same time, it is also limited to only one image consistent with the Aero theme. (more…)

Dig Up the Windows Vista Hidden Boot Screen

Tired of the old Windows Vista default Boot Screen? Well then, there is a simple alternative solution involving nothing more than your copy of the operating system. And just a tad of tweaking, but nothing extensive, and certainly nothing that would cause Vista to become instable or unusable. The fact of the matter is that you will only have to make use of one of the system maintenance tools that ships by default with the platform. And of course that the first tool coming to mind is the System Configuration Utility, or msconfig.

In order to access the System Configuration Utility all you have to do is enter “msconfig” in the Search Box under the Start Menu. Then right-click the highlighted search result and from the contextual menu choose Run as Administrator. The second tab of the utility involves the boot configuration of the operating system or the operating systems installed. From here, you will be able not only to change the default Windows Vista boot screen but also to alter the way in which the platform starts. (more…)

Installing StartCom Enterprise Linux

StartCom Ltd has announced the 5.0.1 update release of their popular StartCom Enterprise Linux two days ago and it brings the latest technologies for any mission-critical server deployments. If you want to try this distribution and don’t know how to install it, here is a step-by-step guide on how to achieve that.

I always recommend having an empty hard drive for a Linux installation (that means no other operating system on it, no Windows) and you must have a minimum of 10 GB free space for the StartCom EL installation. Great, now let’s begin. (more…)
