PS3 Swap to Play PS2/PS1 Game Backups

PS3HaX member drwoogie has just unveiled a rather easy way to play PS2 and PS1 backups on your PS3 (without installing the switch mod to do this.) This process does involve taking apart your PS3, but only to expose the BluRay drive in order to perform the swap. This works with all firmware versions.

Bypass PS3 Game Firmware Check

Remember the whole ordeal behind this supposed .TIF exploit? Well, turns out it is actually useful for something else. As demonstrated in the video below, using the same .TIF, you can launch and play PS3 titles which require a later firmware version. Great for those who remain below 1.93 and have high hopes of an ISO loader being released, one day.

Users over at www.consoletech.net confirms the following;

  • Confirmed: You can now play PS3 games on-line, without updating your current PS3 Firmware!
  • Confirmed: You can now access the official PS3 store without updating your current PS3 Firmware version!

Experimental PSXLoader Released

Hermes, the Spanish homebrew creator behind the likes of PS2Reality Mediaplayer and Guitarfun for the PS2 has released a new loader for PS3 that will allow you to load PS2 homebrew. There are certain tools needed such as firmware greater than v1.90, Swap Magic and some BIOS files. However, for the moment it seems to execute only Guitarfan and Mediplayer PS2 homebrew, but it’s good start all the same.

Translated from the spanish readme file;

“Here you have the first release of this program, wich consists in a loader that adds/replace the missing modules un the PS3 BIOS, plus the USB modules that are used in PS2 aplications (and are compatible with the emulation under PS3).At the moment, it’s only prepared to execute my game Guitarfun and the PS2Reality Mediaplayer, because this is a premature release, so that you can enjoy this aplications and solve some problems.Later, I’m going to try to make a better GUI an even increase visualization rate, to that PS2 aplications wich are stuck and don’t accept pendrives o don’t use “X” modules.”

PlayTV for PS3 Demo

PlayTV has two high definition tuners allowing you to watch one channel while recording another all in 1080p. It uses the European Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial (DVB-T) format meaning a US release isn’t possible in this configuration. You can store shows on your PS3 or transcode and transfer them to your PSP for viewing on the go and, speaking of PSP, you can use the handheld’s Remote Play feature to program or watch your PlayTV while away from home. They promise the interface and guide will of course be beautiful and lightning fast, but until we can try it out for ourselves you’ll just have to take their word for it.

Just in case it’s not the be all and end all of set-top boxes, Sony says, “PlayTV will evolve with time, with great added value functionality being updated via PlayStation Network; a feature that sets it above all other set top boxes. PlayTV will never be out of date.” … At least not for Europeans. PlayTV will hit Europe “early in 2008″ with other PAL territories to follow.
