Windows 7 & Saks Fifth Avenue Working Together to Bring Holiday Cheer

This holiday, Saks Fifth Avenue and Windows 7 are working together to bring the magic of the season to life. For the first time, the legendary Saks Fifth Avenue’s holiday windows will be powered by Windows 7. Additionally, Saks customers will have the opportunity to interact with the newly launched Windows 7 in store through PC lounges.

While this may seem an unusual pairing, the best holiday traditions are the simple ones. Windows and Saks are bringing a 60 year holiday tradition to life and celebrating the simple things that make this time of year special, spending time with family, connecting with friends and sharing good cheer. In addition, fashion and technology are hot items this holiday season and consumers today want their personal technology, like their fashion, to be as unique as they are. Just as Saks Fifth Avenue enables customers to find their personal style, Windows 7 gives customers the ability to customize their PC experience.

Saks’ holiday windows have always been about telling a heart-warming story. Windows 7 will help tell this year’s story, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Flake, with greater detail and excitement, as customers will find holiday windows enhanced through technology. Together, the two companies will share holiday cheer while entertaining New Yorkers and tourists alike in a new and captivating way. The Center 6 windows on 5th Avenue will showcase several of the book’s vibrant scenes and bring Twinkle’s world to life before shoppers’ very eyes.

In the store, customers will experience Windows 7 PCs first hand and ask Microsoft experts questions about both the hardware and software featured.

Simple, Clean and Easy To Open…

We approached the packaging for Windows 7 the same way we approached the product – by listening to what our customers told us they wanted: make it a simple clean design, easy to open, and reduce waste.

Simple Design

Customers told us they liked the big bold Windows logo and how it clearly communicates that it’s Windows 7. They like larger typefaces to make it easy to read. They also like the background colors for each edition that make it easier to differentiate between Windows 7 Home Premium all the way to Windows 7 Ultimate. In their own words, the “clean” design gives off a “fresh” feel.

Make It Easy To Open

We’ve reduced the number of elements in the package down to three: the plastic case, the paper sleeve, and a simple Getting Started Guide. The plastic case opens easily like a standard DVD case and it will have a single easy-to-remove seal at the top - and that’s it!

Reduce Waste

The plastic case protecting the Windows 7 disk is lighter and is recyclable. The packaging itself has a 37% weight reduction and the econometrics score has improved by 50% over it’s predecessor.

Essentially, the packaging is what customers told us they were most interested in picking up to learn more about Windows 7. We hope you do the same.

What is Retail, OEM .. ?

Retail:
This full version of Vista has no limitations. Retail can perform clean and upgrade installs. Retail can be transferred to upgraded or entirely new systems as long as only one copy is installed at a time. Retail also includes full support from Microsoft and is the most expensive edition.

OEM:
This limited version of Vista can only perform a clean install and cannot upgrade. The EULA has been changed from XP OEM and Vista OEM now states that it can only be installed on one computer and is forever bound to that computer (motherboard). This has raised eyebrows, but various tech sources online have indicated that Microsoft's product activation center is not currently enforcing this rule, but only showing concern for whether or not your copy of OEM Vista is installed on 1 or more computers. This rule in the EULA may only be a technicality to discourage people from buying less-expensive OEM versions instead of Upgrade or Retail. However, even if MS gives you an activation key for your upgraded or new system, you are still technically violating the EULA and MS may choose to take action in the future. OEM is intended for system builders you must provide your own support. OEM is the least expensive edition.
