Consumer Group: Insist on XP with your new PC instead of Vista.

Vista LogoIn yet another blow to the reputation of Windows Vista, the Dutch Consumers’ Association (Consumentenbond) has recommended that customers who purchase new PCs insist on obtaining Windows XP over Vista. In addition, it called on computer shops to provide Windows XP downgrades to customers who have already obtained Vista from said shops. After unsuccessfully trying to persuade Microsoft to provide those free downgrades, the DCA said that consumers would have to take matters into their own hands since Microsoft does not agree with its assessment of the OS, which the organization said appears to have been released before it was truly ready. Secure your wireless network with Windows Live OneCare 2.0

Today, quite a few households have wireless networks that are unsecure - wide open for anyone to connect to. This could be a huge problem especially if PC's in that home are sharing important family files - like photos and documents - that shouldn't be seen by strangers. In Windows Live OneCare 2.0, a new feature is coming that will let users of Windows Live OneCare secure an unsecure wireless network in their home. I decided to give this new feature a try and share my experience.

Once I connected to the unsecure wireless network, I launched Windows Live OneCare and was alerted by Windows Live OneCare that I was on an unsecure wireless network and that it can help me to secure it. I clicked "Turn-on" and started the process. Here is a video demo of me going through the process of securing an unsecure wireless network:

Video: Demo: OneCare Wireless Security

I'd like to take a few moments to elaborate on a few things from the video. First off: the router I used to test this was *not* connected to the Internet. Most users who will use this feature to secure their router will have it connected to the Internet. Once going through the wizard to secure the router with Windows Live OneCare - the user and any other PC's on the home network should

PCAnswers.Co.Uk: Why my new laptop is a Macbook

Grrr…For £700 I could have bought a high-spec laptop that enabled me to play some games, but instead I decided to buy an Apple Macbook. This will no doubt be sacrilege to some PC users, but let me explain my decision. I already have a games capable PC, which is far more easily upgradable, so there seems little point in going for a laptop that would only be able to play games for a year or so, before the hardware demands exceeded the laptop’s specifications. In addition, with Apple’s Boot Camp, you effectively get two laptops for the price of one, because I can and do run Windows on it, alongside OS X. However, the biggest reason for switching to OS X is that I’m sick and tired of dealing with all the security issues that are associated with Windows. Read the full article on PCAnswers.Co.Uk

Windows XP SP3 Beta (Build 3205) Released - Analysis Included

Following our coverage of the Windows XP SP3 beta leak almost a month ago in August, here’s some more info on the official beta, which just had its first authorized distributable released earlier today. Say hello to Windows XP SP3, build 3205!

While the newly-released build and the one leaked a month ago (Build 3180) may share the same name, we can exclusively reveal that they are not identical releases. This release, also shipped as windowsxp-kb936929-sp3-x86-enu.exe, is 334.2 megabytes and has been made available to tier-one Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista SP1 beta testers. Hashes are as follows:

CRC: 56e08837
MD5: c8c24ec004332198c47b9ac2b3d400f7

Along with the standalone installer redistributables (in English, Japanese, and German), Microsoft also provided the usual release notes and a list of all the hotfixes included in this release. Contrary to popular belief, Windows XP SP3 does ship with all-new features - not just patches and hotfixes, most of them backported from Windows Vista:
