Computer Hang? Shut It Down the Right Way

At times, you cannot avoid encountering hang-ups as far as your PC is concerned. For one, you may never know if programs have gone corrupt or are encountering errors as far as compatibility or even longer time to load than usual. Before you know it, you will see that message right after the title bar saying “Not Responding”. So what do you do?

For the novice users, the reset button is the immediate recourse. Of course when you do that, you will be taken to the usual scandisk before it loads once again to the actual operating screen. But while that is perhaps the easiest way to remedy such a problem, you can always try the old fashioned way to bring up the task bar window, press the CTRL+ALT+DELETE.

Normally, in the old Windows versions like Windows 98, it would automatically reset your computer like pushing the reset button. But today in Windows XP, it brings up the Windows Task Bar Manager to which you can see the processes running and which programs are not responding. Do you notice that one option that says “Shut Down”? If you want to follow the right way to shut down your PC then use that and you can avoid the troubles of having to scandisk and put your hard drive and programs in jeopardy.

Some may know this but don’t really follow. But the number of times you reset manually can cause a lot of problems like crashes and system instability. Try the old fashioned way using the CTRL+ALT+DELETE. It is safer and wiser to use.

Improper Shutdowns Affect Hard Drive Life

There is a reason why proper shutdown of your PC is being advised. For sure, fluctuations and sudden stop of processes can have a toll and one of the key components that will immediately be affected would have to be your hard drive. Your hard disk is usually the computer part that carries your operating system and files and while they are not physically tangible, even programmers have a hard time trying to save files and systems due to a simple fault in proper PC shutdown practices.

To the average user it does not matter. He always has a friend or technician to restore his PC. But what if your whole PC crashes? What would you do next? If you have backups then fine. But what if you don’t have such and are plainly satisfied with doing these files all over again from scratch? It sorts of defeats the purpose of computers, a device that is known to make life easier for the ones trained to use them.

So while you are fine with constantly shutting it down manually, your computer is compiling errors and though there are software available to correct that problem, you never know when your computer will no longer boot again.

Create quick launch shortcuts to lock, restart, and shutdown computer

Windows Vista automatically assigns shortcuts to the quick launch toolbar. You can quickly create shortcuts to shutdown, restart, and lock the screen, and add them to the quick launch toolbar to have instant access to them. For example, the first shortcut in your quick launch toolbar is automatically assigned to WINDOWS + 1, and the second shortcut is automatically assigned WINDOWS + 2, and so on.

Animate your Start Menu user picture

In early builds of Windows Vista, testers were shown a new 3D interface powered by the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) that was filled with animations of all sorts. This interface was very cool looking. However, because of delays, Microsoft had to cut the use of WPF in the UI and most of the “WOW” was removed.

Thankfully, there are some very talented developers out there that have made utilities to bring back the excitement of the cut features. The one I am covering in this article, is the animated user picture shown on the Start Menu.

Using a great utility called 3D User Picture, you can easily make your start menu look just like the video above. (more…)
