Oracle to buy Sun for $7.4 billion

Sun Microsystems and Oracle Corporation announced today they have entered into an agreement under which Oracle will acquire Sun. The transaction is valued at approximately $7.4 billion, with Oracle purchasing Sun stock with cash for $9.50 per share, a premium of nearly $3 per share over previous market value.

Sun’s stock (JAVA) jumped nearly 33% after news of the purchase was released.

Larry Ellison, Oracle’s chief executive, described Java as “the single most important software asset we have ever acquired.”

By purchasing Sun, Oracle is elevated into the ranks of Dell, HP and IBM, giving them the ability to sell hardware as well as more fully exploit some important Sun software. It also puts them in a better position to compete with Microsoft by giving them control of both a major server operating system and some major business software begin run on it.

In their joint press release, Sun and Oracle cite “substantial long-term strategic customer advantages to Oracle owning two key Sun software assets: Java and Solaris.” Sun’s Solaris operating system is the most widely utilized platform for Oracle databases, which is Oracle’s largest business sector. With the acquisition of Sun, Oracle can optimize the Oracle database for some of the unique, high-end features of Solaris.

There is some worry for proponents of the major open source projects that Sun heads up, like OpenSolaris, MySQL, VirtualBox, OpenOffice and Java itself. It will remain to be seen what Oracle intends to do with these projects and how, if at all, they’ll integrated them into their product offerings.

IBM previously expressed interest in purchasing Sun, for $7b, but withdrew the offer after reviewing Sun’s books and finding out how much they’d been paying their senior employees.

Sun’s Board of Directors has already unanimously approved the transaction and it is anticipated to close this summer, subject to stockholder and regulatory approval.

Hip Replacements via Computers

Computers have been known to play an important role in medical technology these days. We see computers being used in getting results from laboratory exams and digital imagery through radiological services. And it seems that medicine is making another statement as far as bone replacement is concerned as computers are once again called to aid doctors and physicians into making the proper assessments prior to actually making hip replacements to patients that require it.

Engineers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU in Dresden and the University of Leipzig are trying to automate a computer to predict where best to place screws in a given patient’s bone tissue.

Hip replacements are not a simple measure and place methodology. Medical factors that include assessing and closer monitoring of where they can be safely placed is a need. Thanks to computers, this can be done with the close-ups and digital imaging, avoiding problems that can lead towards improper replacements and cause a lot of pain as far as medical attention to patients is concerned.

Medical technology has made it easier for all of us. Rather than purely a logical alternative, computers have lowered the issue of assessments and marginal room for errors. Though not 100% accurate, you can just imagine the breakthrough that people have done as far as aiding medical technology. However, rest assured that medicine can expect more technological assistance from computers in the following years.

Computers Speed up Medical Exams

Technology has its way of speeding up medical results and providing accurate diagnostics. We see them in most healthcare institutions and one would be amazed at how an exam like a mammography exam can be instantaneously expected to provide results and not wait for a couple of days.

But what specs to computers need to align themselves with medical breakthroughs? Normally, it depends on what exam or section in the hospital would be using it. Laboratories for one do not really make use of high-end computers since it is more of computations and calculations of exams through programs. Software is usually DOS based and we have yet to see an advanced way of providing results; that is if it is needed.

Radiology sections however make use of higher computer specs mainly because they deal with imaging. Aside from storage load, the on-screen resolution must be accurate with the actual films that they use. CT Scan Machines, Mammography and Ultrasound machines make use of computers with higher specifications and one can just imagine the resolution requirements needed.

So if today you get results in a hurry, thank technology and medicine for their partnership. This development has opened a wide array of results that make it possible to identify diseases before they get out of hand. The earlier they are detected, the better and that is perhaps where technology helps a lot in saving lives.

Consumers Should Thank the Computer Age

Right now, both the melamine scare and the fluctuating stock prices have overlooked one aspect, the technological aspect. For sure, we all know that if it were not for computers, how could anyone get the faster way of tracing these dreaded melamine contaminants or even monitor the current prices of stocks that are changing by the second.

Computers have been long responsible for these benefits and apparently most people are forgetting it. Could it be because they are too occupied waiting for results? Perhaps that could be acceptable. But if they are wise, they would note that such technology is something that made all of these things possible. In fact, if you look at it, you may even say that without computers, who knows when they could find out results that can make a difference to life.

Today, it is apparent that each person needs information in the fastest way possible. Computers aid them in doing so. But one thing you don’t hear is how they are able to get results and who makes it all happen.

PCs have changed the way we analyze things. It has been that since its inception. But before we go moaning about the problems that beseech us, let us not forget that computers are the main reason for making us advanced today. If only computers had the power to change these issues today, maybe they would get the recognition that they do receive. But that would be asking too much!

Windows XP Piracy Badgering Set To Begin

Microsoft this week plans to update the Windows Genuine Advantage anti-piracy mechanism for Windows XP Professional, which the software giant claims is the most oft-pirated version of Windows. After the update, WGA notifications for XP will be the same as they are for Windows Vista service pack 1, said Alex Kochis, senior product manager in the Windows Genuine Advantage group, in a Tuesday blog post.

That means users whose copies of XP fail validation will see a black background the next time they log in. Although users will be free to switch to their background of choice, the black screen will return every 60 minutes until they validate their copy, and they’ll also see a watermark with a logo that reads “Ask For Genuine Microsoft Software.”

According to Kochis, this will make it easier for XP users to install and stay up to date with the latest release of WGA notifications. “Our research has clearly shown that customers value the ability of Windows to alert them when they may have software that is not genuine, but they also want the ability to stay up to date with the least effort required on their part,” he wrote.

WGA is designed to combat piracy by installing software on users’ PCs that periodically checks to see if their version of Windows is authentic before allowing them to download updates. However, WGA has been a source of frustration for many users since it was launched in 2005, due to several incidents in which genuine users have been mistakenly identified as pirates.

Prior to the release of Vista service pack 1, Vista copies that failed WGA validation would enter a reduced functionality mode in which certain features were disabled, but Microsoft changed to the black screen nagging approach when it released Vista SP1.

When Thinner Becomes a Problem

If you think the smaller and thinner desktops are a distinction to have then you better consider the aftermath as well. Computers and gadgets can break down to and if a certain part such a chip or diode suddenly gets fried, be ready with your cash to have it repaired. Sure there will be the usual warranty stuff but in some rare cases, you will be surprised that these would not be covered by the warranty for the advanced desktop you purchased. Bummer as it may seem, that is a reality.

The probability of experiencing such a mishap is remote but you cannot discount it from happening. It may stem from accidentally means or through improper handling especially when you move it from one place to another. Overuse is another area for consideration as room temperature levels may play a vital role in determining how long such a device can hold.

There is no doubt most gadgets are becoming thinner these days and apparently it will all come to a point where we all love them due to space considerations. But the technology for manufacturing these things does not come cheap and today, there is no telling to what extent these things may result in. You just have to be ready in case they go beyond the traditional repairs by authorized service centers.

This is not to scare most innovative seeking consumers. It is a warning that with technology comes a price tag on it. You have to be ready for it or your PC will lay around inoperable. And this is something you don’t want to see, especially after spending a fortune!
