Connect to a wireless network in Windows Vista

Connecting to a wireless network is fairly easy in Windows Vista much easier than Windows XP but there maybe a bit confusion as Vista has a different naming convention than XP that we got so used to.

A cool thing in Windows Vista is that you can detect a non-broadcasting wireless network or a hidden SSID and you can configure it to be your preferred network. Cool huh… right.

First of all, turn on the wireless adapter…

    • On the Start Orb -> click on “Connect To”
    • A window will pop up and show all available connections (dial-up, VPN and wireless)
    • Pick wireless connection -> click the “Connect”
    • If you’re trying to connect to a security-enabled network, well that would require authentication (so I assume you have a network key which is either WEP or a WPA or a WPA2 encryption key)
    • Now when all info are enterd and done correctly it will show up as connected
    • Also you can modify the connection settings of the wireless network :
    • right click on the connected wireless network and choose “Properties”

For a more secure network on your home network it’s better to Use WPA to secure your Wi-Fi.
